Arc'teryx Atom SV Hooded Insulated Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Atom SV Hooded Insulated Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 December 18, 2011

I started with the Atom LT hoody--and I like it a lot--except for the overly large fleece inserts which are too drafty for me, especially around the upper arms. The new Atom SV seems like it would be perfect. It has great features. But get this... I SWEAR that the SV is actually LESS wind resistent than the LT. it makes no sense. Everything about the SV seems like it should be warmer overall. But it isnt. The SV has more insulation and much smaller inserts, but its all wasted because the outer fabric lets so much more wind in and so much more heat out. I just dont understand. Theres nothing horrible about this jacket. I expected it would be just like the Atom LT, but a little warmer and a little less drafty. I was very very wrong about that.

It fits! The Antifreeze actually fits! Thank you Montane!

Montane Anti-Freeze Down Jacket - Women's

Montane Anti-Freeze Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 27, 2010

I could never find a down jacket. The popular ones all had super slim hips, weirdly gaping necks, big floppy biceps, arms with no mobility.
The Antifreeze is cut longer, the hips are wider, the neck is smaller, and while the sleeves are narrower, they manage to have MORE insulation. A jacket that keeps my arms warm? And I can move? Thank You Montane.
Its so much easier to stay warm in a jacket that fits. Plus the cuffs, bottom hem, Waist, and NECK are all adjustable! There mustve been a woman on the design team.

So far the AF is light and warm and weather resistant. Im happiest when wearing this jacket under a shell or other jacket (in the 20's during the blizzard). I dont stay warm enough with the AF alone especially after dark.
Maybe thats just me. Im usually freezing. I get warm enough in my jacket combos that I have even unzipped to avoid overheating. For me thats a first.

The sizing matches Montane's chart. The cherry is red-ish not pink-ish.
Nitpicks--
My zipper is sewn a little crooked, but it works just fine.
When worn on its own theres a cold spot on the tops of my shoulders--thats probably typical of down jackets though.

If you have a truly wide neck, beware, this jacket may not work for you.

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Women's

October 30, 2010

I tried on a medium and had way too much empty space in there. But I couldnt move my arms in the small and the arms were way too short. Can anyone comment about sizing? I have a 35 inch chest and 28 inch waist. That would seem to make me a medium, but im mot kidding, it was huge! Do you think the one I tried on was made/marked right?

Tretorn Glad Rain Boot - Women's

Tretorn Glad Rain Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 October 2, 2010

These run big and wide enough to pull off my feet when I walk. DO NOT size up! Otherwise they're comfy. Perhaps because theyre so big you feet dont get steamy. The soles on these arent painful and thin, unlike some other boots I've tried. Mine are almost 10 inches from floor to top.
One warning. The heels are surprisingly slippy on tile/marble/metal. So be careful where you put your feet. Otherwise theyre fine.

ExOfficio Insect Shield Halo Check Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 September 21, 2010

My first halo shirt (a solid color which i still love) is a tad small. So I sprung for a medium. Its huge! The chest is five inches larger than the small. Im confused that others wrote that theirs ran small, when the one I got was so unexpectedly big. Also be aware that the fuschia check is mostly orange looking. Its NOT hideous, but it IS orange.

Not close fitting enough

Oakley Enduring Pace Sunglasses - Women's

Oakley Enduring Pace Sunglasses - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 May 28, 2010

My complaint is the opposite of the other reviewer. My endure lenses sit way FAR off my cheeks. They let in a lot of light and air below and to the side. Its a shame because the Endure frame fits well, stays where you put it,--and its cute too. But I'd rather be able to wear the Radars--those lenses fit closer to the cheeks, have a larger field of view, and wrap around into your peripheral vision. (I have a hard time with my peripheral vision in my endures - I have to be EXTRA careful of cars.) Unfortunately the Radars have a WIDE frame. So - why is it next to impossible to find wrap arounds for women/smaller/junior faces? Dont we deserve eye protection and coverage too?

Can anyone comment on size Small vs. size Medium in these? Im definitely not a Small according to the size chart, but the butt on the Medium is way too baggy for me. Its not a problem I usually have.

Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible Pant - Women's

Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 May 6, 2010

These run big/wide. And long. Even the short lenghth runs long. My size 6-S has an inseam thats over 31 inches long. The crotch length on the Regular lenghth fit me better, but the legs on those were crazy long.
Tall girls are going to love these.

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Women's

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 May 6, 2010

These ARE cute, but the articulated knees hang exceptionally low. Its a problem if you're shorter than average. To fix them you'd have to take them up above the knees, but below the (also low hanging) side pockets, which may be impossible. Otherwise they have a nice slim/junior fit that is true to size, but very different from the cut of most of the NF and Columbia stuff.

not that warm

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 January 17, 2010

The atom makes a nice, light layer, but its not much of a cold-weather jacket. Wind flies through every seam. Every breeze sends cold air swirlign around my arms. And the fleece breathes way too much for me. The jacket keeps my back toasty and my head warm while my arms, armpits and shoulders freeze. Its an odd combination. The Atom must be meant for hot blooded people who need to dump lots of heat. The Atom would give them a sweaty back though, but they wouldnt be chilled by it.

Good points: the jacket IS water resistant. its comfy. it has the best non-adjustable hood I've ever worn. its light. and the cuffs at the wrists are genius.

Atom has a nice feminine silouette. But I disagree with another reviewer about sizing down. The jacket is close around the hips, and theres no way any woman with 40 inch hips could wear a medium as per the size chart. There isnt enough fabric to go around, and the fleece isnt THAT stretchy. I think the pockets would be stretched open if you wore a medium with anythigng more than 38 inch hips. It wouldnt be a good look. There IS a drawcord, so even if you picked a bigger size you could cinch it if you had to.

Arc'teryx Kappa SV Hooded Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Kappa SV Hooded Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 17, 2010

Nice warm jacket you can still move in. It really is true that wind doesnt come through the seams. The pockets are great--not skimpy like they are in most women's jackets. The hood isnt skimpy either--its just warm and adjustable.

The back length on my medium is almost 27 inches.

The worst thing I can say about the jacket is the hood can be crunchy-sounding.

Dont be afraid of size XS

CW-X Stabilyx Tight - Women's

CW-X Stabilyx Tight - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

Dont be afraid of size XS if you are short and/or have narrow legs. I found XS to be the right size for me in this style, which is odd because I cant wear size small pantyhose--theyre so tight they hurt. But in these Stabilyx tights Im an XS. The first time I wore them I was uncertain. The second time they seemed to magically be the right size.
I also tried on sizes M and S but they were too big around the leg (relatively big, but still like tights), and the thighs were too long (though the shins never were). So, size XS it is. FYI, Im five two, with a twenty eight inch waist. NB - if you have large ankles or calves, you will NOT be happy with the cuffs on the XS, youll absolutely have to size up.

Want to love em - but mine must be made backwards

Merrell Thermo Arc 6 Waterproof Boot - Women's

Merrell Thermo Arc 6 Waterproof Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 November 10, 2009

These boots try to make me into a nock-kneed overpronator. I thought once I wore them a little, they'd change because they're fairly soft for boots, and also because they came with a tiny foldout touting Merrell's "QForm." They CLAIM QForm is their design to provide women-oriented support and cushioning--softer laterally and firmer medially, thus gently encouraging a neutral gait. Its like they started with a good concept and then did EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. Mine FORCE me to overpronate. My left ankle bones feel crunched--something I've never felt before.

Thank heavens the cuffs are rounded and soft and short because they tend to dig into my ankles on the outsides, and pull away from the insides (the arch side) of my ankles. Its caused by the weird pronating of the boots. Im sure the gaps will let the snow in nicely.

Otherwise these Thermo Arcs may seem to run small, but after 20 minutes of wear they're magically true to size. and no blisters. They're cute. They grip rock (dont know about snow or ice yet). And if they didnt have the forced overpronation problem to them, theyd have a nice roll from heel to toe. I WANT to like them because they have good features, but my feet would be damaged if I spent much time in them.

Definitely give the NF K jacket a try.

The North Face K Jacket - Women's

The North Face K Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 14, 2009

Very happy I bought this jacket.
So far its repelled the city wind and rain.
The pockets are only a little small but I love them--they lie flat--they're not made of velcro/mesh so they dont catch on clothes and keys--and there are five, YES FIVE of them.
The tidy way the hood comes off/on is wonderful. The hood itself is a little odd. Its very deep and theres no way to shorten it. If youve got somethign on your head or a ponytail its no problem. But if you have a little head, the hood will come right over your face.
This jacket is shorter from shoulder to waist (Yay!) than other NF jackets I've tried. It also seems slimmer through the bust and hips. I'm 5'2" and I have a medium. The small wouldnt zip over my hips even though Im a size small according to the chart. So....if you think you're a little hippy, consider sizing up. (Even though I have a medium, I still tend to unzip the coat at the bottom when I'm sitting for a while.) PS -The K jacket seems to have a very different fit than the NF Grace.

nice little pack, but, what about 5'2" me?

CamelBak Helena Hydration Pack 3L - Women's

CamelBak Helena Hydration Pack 3L - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 June 19, 2008

Helena looked small at first, but it easily holds everythign I need for a day--AND more water than I've ever used, ever. It has nice features--pockets, padding, compression straps, ventilation for your back.
Problem--This is a woman's pack but the torso length is too long for me by atleast an inch. Disappointing. Im 5'2"--not exceptionally short for a woman. Thats the most annoying thing with the Helena-taller people already have options--what about me? They couldve made the torso lengh shorter, they even couldve made the whole thing a little wider to make it more versatile. Other minor things. The hip belt slides open despite the elastic, but you can always knot it. Also there were no instructions for first use and cleaning of the bladder and tubing.
