Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 2, 2012

XXL weighed in at 13.6 oz. Fit is spot on for my 50" chest. interior pocket/stuff sack is great. this thing would compress to the size of a grapefruit if need be. not bulky at all. zippers are flawless. Mango color not as intense as pictured.

Rab Fusion Softshell Pant - Men's

Rab Fusion Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 12, 2012

this is my second pair of soft-shell pants (returned the MH Winter Wander) and I'm really liking these. paired them with Rho leggings today for a 22dF / 25mph wind ridge hike; not rated as wind-stopper pants they performed like them without any moisture build-up. they don't have a gusseted crotch but this wasn't a problem as the fabric has so much stretch, binding is not an issue. no unnecessary bells and whistles. belt loop stitch let loose but nothing major.

Marmot Afterburner Fleece Jacket - Men's

Marmot Afterburner Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 12, 2012

well built, does what a wind stopper should. more supple hand than the MH equivalent. field tested in 23dF / 25mphWinds, paired with a short sleeve wool/poly shirt and Arc'teryx Rho 1/4 zip. almost too warm hiking the exposed ridge, but absolutely no wind gettin thru this thing. stylish enough for urban wear. great value for the price paid. sized for normal size people; if you prefer a slim or athletic fit its probably not the jacket for you.

I currently own 6 pair of Point6. in hot/humid mid-atlantic summer I have never had a blister. in subfreezing back country, never a cold toe. Quality far exceeds SmartWool, EuroSocks, Bridgedale which I have also owned. thanks to BC for carrying such a wonderful product.

fit is ok. material has a soft hand compared to prior versions (I have 3pr). zipper is questionable; zipper sticks (usually in the up position) which is a major pain if you've been at the pub all evening. zipper on my oldest pair (less than 1 y.o.)stays up about half the time.
******update; zipper failed, returned the pants

Marmot Gravity Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Gravity Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 27, 2010

spent the week in Dolly Sods Wilderness. Weather front charged in from Canada producing 30-40mph winds and 27dF, = windchill of 8dF. with a midweight marino base and fleece vest I was sweating a bit (didnt feel like stopping to remove vest).
i have braod shoulders and an ever expanding mid-rif; excellent fit in shoulders and nice athletic fit in mid-rif, perfect fit sans vest. Wind, what wind? may fit a bit loose for the extremely fit, just right for us normal folk. not too many bells and whistles, liking the shoulder vs. chest pocket for lip balm and glasses wipe. it was snowing during my trip so I cant comment on rain shedding ability. another quality Marmont piece!!

Gregory Baltoro 70 Backpack - 4149-4638cu in

Gregory Baltoro 70 Backpack - 4149-4638cu in

Rating for this product: 4 November 27, 2010

Purchaed this to replace my 12yo+ Gregory Wind River. At 5'11" 240lb, I purchased the Medium as my torso length dictated. Another review metioned purchasing a medium belt on large bag, not sure this will work when it comes to fitting the shoulder straps properly. even with my shorter torso and selecting the medium pack, shoulder straps still have some gaps after lowering to the lowest position. this is a minor point for me. the pack works very well! a recent multi day solo trip to Dolly Sods Wilderness (day time temps, mid 20s) showed this pack to be a capable piece. holds all my winter gear except for the extra ridgerest I bring on extreme cold days, this lashed to the outside easily. the trip consisted of easy rolling mountain top travel wth several stream crossings. the crossings require some nimble rock hopping, the pack was extremely well balanced for this aspect. the winter load being hauled was hardly noticed. there isnt an over abundance of bells and whistles on this piece which I appreciate, just a good solid pack. as with most backcountry gear, make sure you size it properly.

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Tech Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Tech Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 October 25, 2010

my biggest beef with this piece is its lack of durability. only one season old and this top has developed holes. I take extreme care of my gear and yet this one didnt hold up to moderate use. I think it may have to do with the wool content. I have found that my other merino pcs that contain a higher synthetic to wool ratio tend to hold up better. some may argue that you loose anti funk abilities and I would agree, but this is a cold weather piece and I often camp alone. I'll take longevity over stink ability 6 days a week.
I also found this piece to be the itchiest top I own. two other IB items i've purchased have had similar wear and tear issues.

Rating for this product: 3 October 25, 2010

two detractors from these otherwise solid rain pants.
1) the velcro waist taps struggle to stay put.
2) the wetted out to quickly for my liking or use. after two hours of a moderate downpour, the thigh area had wetted out.
as a light piece for a day or weekend trip in moderate conditions, they are ok.

Arc'teryx Rho LT Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2010

........but doesnt fit like a blanket; standard fit. like most Arc products this a high quality piece of gear. Super warm, super soft next to skin. I would not recommend this for use over 32dF, high aerobic activity, its just too warm. my primary uses are back country winter hiking in WVA and long cold days on the lifts as a baselayer. with the discontinued colors on sale, I will be purchasing another.

Marmot Oracle Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 9, 2010

I agree with Weathering the Lions, a nice rain pant for the $$. wore these in a six hour down pour; cold, vertical blowing rain on the AT in December. there was some leakage but only cuz I had neglected to close the zippered pocket. siszing is very good; I'm packing a few extra pounds these days and all of my Marmot gear has just the n'th extra amount of space so I dont have to buy the XXL.
I'm 5'11" and 245lbs. all in all a good option for a mid priced serviceable rain pant.

only had these a few days but lovin em so far. barely tell I have em on. didnt give them a five until i see how they hold up to trail life and multiple washings. my first and only pair of Smartwool skivvies disintegrated like wet TP in a windstorm. the wool content in the IO doesnt appear to be the same as SW but that may be a plus. time will tell. is that TMI for a pair of undies....

Mountain Hardwear Viperine 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 January 9, 2010

good tent for the money, i got it on another site for 200 even. i would only call this a two person tent if you are a) very comfortable with your tentmate and b) not cluastrophobic. I'm not knocking the tent, it just runs on the small side. typical MH quality and will make a fine solo tent for me. I prefer a littile more room than most solo tents provide.

Cloudveil Wister Fleece Jacket - Men's

Cloudveil Wister Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2009

as the other review states; this thing might be mistaken for a shell due to its water shedding ability. it is also the warmest fleece I've owned. so warm in fact that some may find it too much for highly arobic activity on anything other than subfreezing day. that said, I feel this jacket could probably suffice most to needing no more than long sleeve Cap2 underneath. Construction is phenominal, zippers work flawlessly and wind resitance is top notch. cut and fit is perfect for my 6' 235lb frame. with just enough room to add a camp sweater but not so loose as to loose its thermal qualities or look baggy. yes its pricey but your looking at a jacket that could easily last ten years. btw, color is way off from that shown on BC site.

Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 25, 2009

To those confused with the different sizing comments, allow me to confuse you further. I am 6'235lb and normally wear a XL for my size 38 waist. took a chance and purchsed the large as this was the upper end of the MH size chart for these pants. I would say the fit is just right. the fit it is snug in the waist but the fabric has a very nice stretch. there is no binding, chaffing etc. the only con; the leg hem cinch does not work, I ended up cutting them off. I wear gaiters half the time anyway and dont need them.
