Don't Waste Your Money

Stoic Welded Sport Duffel

Stoic Welded Sport Duffel

Rating for this product: 1 August 23, 2011

I bought this bag about a year ago for $30 on S&C. At first the bag appeared to be great. It's waterproof and the bag material is very durable. Now the bad news. The outside pocket zipper delaminated and is no longer usable. The edge seam on the main zipper is mostly destroyed at this point. The shoulder strap pad is a crummy piece of plastic and it has broken in half. Again, don't waste your money on this poor excuse of a gym bag.

Dry feet = happy feet

Tecnica Alpine Speed High GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Tecnica Alpine Speed High GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 17, 2011

I just got back from a trip to Denali National Park, which was the first test for these boots. I've had them for over 6 months now, but haven't tested them beyond casual winter wear. During the trip I had to cross shallow rivers that were ankle deep and traverse spongy and arctic tundra while raining. These boots performed well beyond my expectations. My feet stayed dry the entire time, the boots are very comfortable, they are very lightweight, and the traction is perfect for the terrain I was hiking. The only con I can see with this boot is the synthetic material (the orange part in the picture) gets saturated rather quickly, which in some cases might hinder the GoreTex insert from wicking moisture out of the boot, but it might have also been my socks collecting moisture. I love the boots and would buy them all over again if I needed to.

Lightweight windblocker

Marmot Moran Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Moran Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 29, 2011

FIT
First off, I'm 5'10", 190lbs, broad shoulders, wear a dress shirt size 16.5" neck with 34/35 sleeves, fitted cut. Marmot jackets have an athletic cut and I tried on the Gravity in local stores in both L and XL. The L size fit like a glove with a thinner layer underneath while the XL still fit well, but had more room for a thicker under layer. The sizing of the Moran XL is nearly identical to the Gravity. So, fit-wise if you're around my size then get the L if you aren't planning on layering up more than a thin mid layer, otherwise get the XL. I can fit a regular fleece under the XL and still have free movement.

JACKET
The build quality is good, no frayed stitching at all. The jacket is Marmot's M2 level materials, which means they skimp a little on warmth but step up the breath-ability. I would say this jacket would be good down to around 35-40F with a t-shirt, anything lower and you'll need to start layering. It's great at keeping the wind out, but no rain or snow yet so I can't comment on how well it keeps the wet out. The tech-specs show no venting, but there is venting through the pockets and there are pit-zips, which was a nice surprise. Overall the jacket is very light, noticeably lighter than the Gravity.

RECOMMENDATIONS
If you want a lightweight jacket to keep you warm during spring/fall hikes I'd say this jacket is for you. If you want a winter softshell I would say stick to the M1 material jackets or size up this jacket and layer underneath, which is what I am doing.

Stoic Monolith Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 23, 2011

How does this compare size-wise to other brands? I'm 5'10", 190lbs, with broad shoulders and a larger chest. Marmot Gravity in L fits like a glove, but leaves no room for layers so I'd have to go XL. TNF Apex Bionic in L fits well enough for a layer underneath, and I swim in the XL.

Sierra Designs Vapor Hoody Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 20, 2011

Does this jacket have pit zips? I'm 5'10", 190lbs with broad shoulders and larger chest. Would a L be big enough, or should I go with the XL? Thanks.

Great pants, but remember your base layer

Oakley Crash Pant - Men's

Oakley Crash Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 29, 2008

I just got these pants a few days ago and immediately threw them on and went outside where it was about 15 degrees and windy. After about 5 minutes my legs were freezing. Back inside I went and threw on a base layer. With the base layer and pants I was plenty warm. I sat around in the snow for a bit and the water never penetrated the pants. Pants do not have any insulation at all. The fleece material is only for the pockets while the pants are lined with nylon.

I'm 5'10", 195 lbs, and have about a 34-35/32 pant size and the large is perfect. Could use some more pockets, but there's enough to store things and there's a lanyard for your keys. Pockets are made from a nice fleece material. The inner thigh vents are pretty large and lined with mesh. Overall I am very satisfied with my pants for the price and you guys provided great customer service and quick shipping.
