this as a strictly layering element in your cold weather quiver is great, feels so light I wondered if it would do well, but today it was negative temps all day, and over 2 base layers, it was perfect skiing, and in a wind on the lift, and overly toasty hiking, at super cold temps I'd recommend venting the shell as much as possible, as I did build up alot of sweat by not venting, as far as the feeling cheap comment, don't plan on impressing the ladies at the mtn pub with this, because that is not it's purpose, nor weathering a work day, or storm on it's own, it's light and squeezzes into a pocket of your shell if need be, and thus worth its negligible weight and superior warmth in gold
