WTB Wolverine Tire - 26in Tubeless
July 16, 2011
I've never had this problem. You can run lower pressure without as much risk of flatting, which could lead to dinging your rims if you're hitting big rocks at speed. Other than that, no. You're not going to risk a bent rim with tubeless tires.

SRAM PG-970 Cassette (9 Speed)
July 13, 2011
The basic idea is that the smaller the number translates to how fast you can pedal the bike down a hill, and the bigger the number translates into how easy it will be to grind up a hill.
The fewer teeth there are on the smallest cog, the longer it'll take you to pedal out of your gears. For example, running a 36t front chainring with a 11t smallest cog in the rear will basically make it so you won't spin out as fast as with a 12t rear cog. In other words, you'll be able to pedal your bike to a higher top speed because for every one revolution of your cranks with an 11t rear cog, your wheel will revolve 3.27 times (36/11), whereas with a 12t rear, your wheel will revolve 3.0 times (36/12).
The tallest cog - the bigger number - translates into how easy you can make your gear ratio for climbs. For example, say we're running in the small ring in the front, a 24t. If you've got the 11-21 cassette, your biggest gear in the back will be 21t, and your easiest gear ratio will be 1.14. For every revolution of the cranks, your rear wheel will rotate 1.14 times. Thats not an easy gear to climb a steep hill with. If you're running a 11-34t cassette, then that changes to 0.71 (24/34), a much, much easier gear to climb with.

SRAM X7 Rear Derailleur - 9-Speed
July 13, 2011
Yep. All the SRAM X stuff works together for the respective speeds. All the 9-speed X5, X7, X9, and X0 shifters and derailleurs work interchangeably. Same thing goes for the 10- speed stuff. You just can't mix the 9-speed and 10-speed stuff together. The 9-speed uses 1:1 Actuation, and the 10-speed stuff uses Exact Actuation.

TruVativ Stylo OCT All Mountain 9 Speed 2.2 Crankset - Double
June 25, 2011
You got it on the second part. The Stylo OCT 2.2 and 3.3 crank arms are identical. They just bolt different rings to them. The chainlines for the smallest two gears on the 2.2 are going to be the same as the chainlines for the smallest 2 gears on the 3.3.
That being said, I'm running this Stylo OCT 2.2 in a 2x10 drivetrain and it works perfectly fine. It pedals great, shifts flawlessly through the gears, and it doesn't wear on the cassette or chain any faster than any other setup I've run.

Other sites list this wheelset as having a QR adapter. That means that you'll be running a 15mm hub and have the ability to use the included 9mm QR adapters to run a 9mm front hub.
Those wheels in the photos (as of today) are also Centerlock wheels. Again, the other sites have this wheelset listed as being Centerlock hubs with 6-bolt adapters so that you can run either Centerlock rotors or standard 6-bolt rotors.

Rocky Mountain Vertex 30 XC Bike
May 25, 2010
Your best bet is to go into a shop and see what is comfortable. Get someone who's ridden a bit to help you get on the right size bike. It really doesn't matter what brand you look at - you can just compare the geometry to this bike. In all honest-to-goodness, I'd say the top tube length is the most important number to look at, followed by the standover, then headtube angle. Find out what you like, then come here and get the bike.
Another thing to keep in mind is your own preference on sizing - some people like smaller bikes on the trail, some like larger. Based on what your height, and assuming you have a normal reach (how long your arms/torso are), I'd say you could safely go for the 18". However, you might consider the 16.5' of 19" frame, just depending on your pants inseam (for the standover), your reach, and how you like to ride.

Crank Brothers Iodine Wheelset - 26in
June 7, 2009
You can use this wheelset for DJing, but it probably wouldn't be a very good idea - it is not what this wheelset was designed for. You wont get the same durabilty banging these around on jumps as you would with a DH/FR/DJ specific wheelset. In addition to the wheels listed above, another great wheelset that won't break the bank you should check out are the Azonic Outlaws. They're strong, relatively light, and come in all kinds of colors.

Fox Racing Launch Suit
June 3, 2009
I have tried Dainese and Fox knee/shin guards. The Dainese definitely had a lot the most protection, but the Fox (which is what I ride with now) was just more flexible and comfortable. Both sets had the full plastic coverage, not just the foam. Keep in mind that knee/shin gear is going to protect your knee from impacts, not stabilize or support it.

Continental Top Contact Reflex City/Trekking Tire
May 29, 2009
They are probably halfway decent at resisting punctures. If you really want to protect against punctures, you could run tire liners, use puncture-resistant tubes, thick DH-ish tubes, or put that slime stuff in your tires. Something in addition to the tire is probably going to be your best bet.

I would recommend trying to actually find some armor and trying it on to make sure that you are actually protecting your shoulder enough. That being said, this Fox jacket is pretty decent. La Sportiva Glacier EVO Mountaineering Boot - Men's
May 14, 2009
The Glaciers are probably going to be the best for you. They'll break in to be super comfortable, and probably outlast the other two options you have there. The leather boot is just a beautiful thing - more durable, more comfortable, and they just keep asking for more. I'd also take a serious look at the Makalus. They're a bit beefier than the Glaciers, which will be really nice if you're doing some serious backcountry work. Regardless, the Glaciers or the Makalus will hold up to anything you throw at them.

Black Diamond ATC Belay Device
April 12, 2009
It will work, but not all that great. On my 8mm glacier rope, it can get a little dicey with the regular ATC - there's just not nearly as much stopping power as with a bigger rope. I'd go for one of the fancy ATCs for $5 more that have the teeth on one end. They will work a lot better on smaller diameter ropes.

Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Axe
April 12, 2009
Get a straight axe for your first one. Curved axes are for more technical mountaineering. Length is very much a personal preference and is based on your height - I'd suggest a 60cm to 70cm for your first axe, depending on how tall you are. I'm 6' even, and I use a 65cm axe.
A comfortable grip is my #1 priority. You're going to be holding onto an axe for a long time, so get something that fits nice in your hand. These BD axes are great. I've got the regular Raven, and it's nice and comfy. #2 is weight - hogging a heavy axe sucks. On the same token, an axe that is too light doesn't really give me much confidence if in a situation where I have to self-arrest or belay off it.

Beal Edlinger 10.2mm Golden Dry Rope
April 12, 2009
I'd suggest you go for a 10mm or bigger diameter rope, and the more UIAA falls, the better. If you're only using it for TR and then starting sport climbing later, having the added durability of a slightly larger diameter rope will serve you well. Once you progress and start working harder sport routes, then consider getting a smaller rope. For now, get something that you can use for a good while without worrying too much about having to retire it. Also, dry ropes add a premium to the cost - if you're not planning on doing any climbing in wet conditions (i.e. a sunny weekend warrior type), I'd even shy away from that feature. That being said, it is a nice to have just in case.

La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's
April 11, 2009
These are great boots, and would probably work just fine for you as a beginner. Personally, I'd suggest picking up the La Sportiva Makalu boots over these. They are tried and true, and only get more comfortable the more you wear them. You'll be able to climb everything you can climb with the Trango S EVOs, and be able to use them for backpacking the next weekend. You sacrifice a little extra weight for a bunch of all-around durability.
Either way, you're going to be getting great boots that aren't going to hold you back.

Black Diamond Camalot C4s
March 24, 2009
Trango makes good stuff - I have and use a set of the Flexcams. In all honest-to-goodness, even though your range for the Max Cam is a little bit better than the C4, with the C4s, you don't have one of the axles floating. This becomes really important if your cam walks back into a flaring-back crack - it still can act as passive protection. Maybe get your C4s for your workhorse cams, then keep a couple Max Cams as panic pieces or for blind placements where having a big range to get a piece in as quickly as possible is more important than anything else.
Here's all the numbers for both of them:

Marmot Pinnacle Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down
January 19, 2009
I am 185 cm as well and the regular is perfect for me. If you like a bit of room in the foot/head end you should go for the larger one. It is'nt very roomy lengthwise, but enough to fit into it properly. If you are 5 cm (2 inches) more i would definitely go for the larger one. You would still fit but...Room is the key. If you plan to sleep with additional clothing, a fuel canister, or you don't like being constricted, I consider the long. For the other people out there, at 6' even, I got the long. If you go too short, your feet hit the end of the bag which stretched the entire thing out. This makes you lose loft, and the bag won't stay as warm. I also like to have room to stuff a jacket at my feet to keep it warm for the morning.
