Nike Fremont Stretch Twill 5-Pocket Slim Denim Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 22, 2013

Ahh, the pants are great. Fit well, way comfortable and good looking. Alas, the little bit of cloth that covers the zipper, flops open whenever I sit. So, I like wearing them, but this is a drag.

Fit true to size, well made, looks good enough for work, but plays great. Tough to avoid wearing every day. Wish they had more colors, and I'd buy another pair.

Burton Truckstop Beanie

Burton Truckstop Beanie

Rating for this product: 3 January 8, 2013

As advertised, fits a big head well, looks good. But if you live where there's big winter, you'll need something a bit more burly. Wind cuts right through, as does any cold below, say, 32 degrees.

Imperial Motion Whip Denim Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 10, 2012

Slim, but not very slim. Feel a bit stretchy, but not stretchy. Easy to wear with a t-shirt, but sits under a sport coat just fine. I have jeans I like better, but these find their way over my ass 'bout once a week. Good buy, well made and no complaints.

Arc'teryx Solano Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Solano Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 August 2, 2012

Well, my kids say I have a jacket for every 5 degrees of temperature. But this jacket now sits on my coat rack, waiting for its ideal time and temp. Yep, it looks good, as Arc'teryx jackets do. And, yep, it fits well. But my rain jackets (PacLite & Hoodini) give me all the weather protection I need. It is clammy and funky-feeling against the skin, sports only 2 outer pockets, isn't long enough in the back to be an efficient cycling jacket. But current BC pricing in good, so if you don't get much mail, and want a new jacket delivered to your house or P.O. box, go ahead and buy this one. It will look good on the coat rack, and maybe you'll find just the right weather for it to perform. So far, it hasn't done much for me.

Big surprise

Patagonia Footwear Specter Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Patagonia Footwear Specter Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 9, 2012

I've been wearing Pagagonia gear since Mr. C cut his first pair of shorts. Very tough company to beat when it comes to outdoor gear. And, while I've run thousands of trail miles in their Long Haul Trucker (now discontinued) shorts, tights (also discontinued), and capilene tops and socks, I have avoided their footwear. Nike, Salomon, Brooks, Vasque, etc. are all shoe companies, and - I figured - knew more about trail running shoes than Patagonia ever would.

And, I wear an odd sized shoe - 13 narrow. My heel is so narrow that I've never been able to wear loafers. They won't stay on my feet. With many companies moving away from narrow lasts, and often only going to size 12.5, I've come to stick with a few brands that I know will fit and last.

So, after reading that they run narrow, and thinking through the lacing system's seeming advantages, I bought a pair on BC. They are simply terrific. I've run only up to 13miles in the mountains, but they are the most comfortable shoe I own. Lighter than most of my shoes, they still provide all the support this heavy (185lbs) trail runner needs. I will stretch them out for longer runs soon, and feel confident they will continue to perform this well.

Today I went back to BC and bought the remaining 2 sales pair they had in my size. What a great surprise. If your foot is anthing like mine, and you have a good, normal gait, grab a pair before they are either discontinued, or imroved.

Gore Bike Wear ALP-X GT Pant - Men's

Gore Bike Wear ALP-X GT Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2012

I've been a long-distance bicycle tourist for over 40 years, and have built my "gear stash" over that time. These pants mark the finish of my gear pursuit. I looked at them for years, was oh-so-interested in buying them, but simply could not justify the price. My rain jacket is an Arc Teryx Pac Lite (puprchased on-line and on sale), and it has functioned so wonderfully well, I was hoping a cycling-specific PacLite rain pant would complete the set.

Well, the came on sale and I (6'1", 185lb) picked-up a large. Oh, am I glad I did! I've worn them in full rainstorms, at 40f with a big wind and only shorts underneath, and put them on taken them off without removing my size 13 cycling shoes.

Simply the best. I hope I live to ride through many a rainy day with this wonderful gear.

Marmot DriClime Catalyst Jacket - Women's

Marmot DriClime Catalyst Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 January 25, 2012

Bought this for my daughter, who has just taken-up running. Gave her a P'gonia Hoodini a few years ago, and - while it is one of the most effective outdoor garments ever made - this jacket looks a lot better on a good looking woman.

Other than looks, the jacket works really well for a person who runs in bad weather, but for only a half-hour or so. Warmish, windproofish, rain resistantish. If you run longer, want better protection in a much lighter garment, and don't really care how cute you look, than get the Hoodini. It's 5 stars for sure.

I was looking for socks I could wear with jeans, and also for the snowy runs I'll be taking until April or May. These socks are just fine for daily wear, and give me the sock length I need when wearing tights. You know, keep the snow off my ankles. They work. Nothing very special, but met mey expectations.

more cushioned and comfortable

Salomon XA Pro 5 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 5 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 14, 2011

Well, I have a hard time keeping Salomon trail runner's models straight. I've run a number of 50ks in the XA Pro 3D's, and loved their ability to carry my 185lbs over that distance. These XA Pro 5's improve the cushion markedly. I ran a 12mi training run in them, out of the box, then wore them for the first 30mi of a 50 miler. A marked improvement, where I didn't think it was needed. The lacing is great and enables the shoe to be cinched-up enough to fit my long (13), narrow (B) foot. From now on, I'll be training in the XA Pro 3D's and racing in these.

The North Face Better Than Naked Crew Top - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2011

Bought this shirt on S&C. My first venture off Pgna's Cap shirts. Now it's my first choice for a long run on a warm day. Really is better than naked, in its wicking and cooling. But...it comes out of the dryer with wrinkles, pills easier than I wish, so does not make it as a casual shirt. All that said, I still reach for it when the run is long and the sun is out.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 18, 2011

I have run 3 50k trail races in these shoes, many, many 20+mile training runs, and just finished a 19 mile run in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. I am an old guy, and carry a solid 185lbs. These shoes are as comfortable at the end of an 8hr run, as they are when I put them on. I don't know about their style-points, but from the sole and last, to the cool lacing method, they are simply the very best trail running shoes I have ever worn.

Great trail-runner, but a bit funky

Mountain Hardwear Refueler Short - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Refueler Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 10, 2011

Well, P'gonia quit making Long-haul Runners, so I needed to look elsewhere. Since I've had really good luck with Mtn.Hdwr. stuff, and the price was right, thought I'd give these a try. Well, I've run a 50k in them, and wore them in a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim, and I am very satisfied. They fit well, though a bit tighter than the LHR's, mostly because of a more compressed liner. Keeps the package solid, but I miss a bit of the previous looseness. the front pocket opens to the front, which is not a problem - holds everything secure - but looks a bit like I've put my shorts on backwards, as friends have noted. Perhaps this is simply a reflection of my absentmindedness, but you'll probably be asked the same question.

Also, on a trail fall, I got a small tear in one leg. Not a problem a needle and thread can't fix, but the LHR's would have slid right over those rocks.

Good short, great price. I'd buy them again.

Mountain Hardwear Refueler Short - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Refueler Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 26, 2011

Ran for years in P'gonia's Long Haul Truckers, but - as with a lot of great gear - they stopped making them. Found these at BC and, since they're Mtn. Hrdwr., thought I'd give them a try.

Now, I've run a 50k in them, and just returned from wearing them from the North to South rims of the Grand Canyon. They are just the right length, handle weather well, fit to size, and are really comfortable.

The outside pocket faces front, instead of back. That's not a practical problem, as contents stay in under even trying conditions. But, people frequently ask if I've got my shorts on backwards. Not an unusual possibility, if you knew me.

They are also not quite as tough as the LHR's, as I got a tear on a trail fall that my old shorts would hare slid right over.

Good price, solid shorts.

Marmot Gravity Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Gravity Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2011

Nice jacket. Mostly an area piece for me, snowboarding in all but the wettest conditions. It's warm enough to handle most weather, with appropriate layering. Cuffs work really well, and I rarely miss a hood, as my helmet takes care of that. The sizing is normal (6'2", 185lbs = XL), and the stretch is just right. Got a great price ($99) on S&C, and it does everything it's supposed to do.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2010

After 30 years of running, mostly on trails, I'm trying to break into ultras. One challenge has been shoes. I'm toting a mid-180s bit of body weight and, while I can easily find a shoe for 10, 15, or even 20 miles, getting the next 10 or more miles has required a mid-event shoe change.

No more. These babies carry all my weight, all my gear over all my miles and are still comfortable enough to walk around the finishing area, looking oh-so-cool.

Fast, comfortable, and very long-lasting. Best long-distance, trail shoe I've ever worn.

All-mountain rider's best pal

Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boot - Men's

Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 22, 2010

I bought my 1st pair of Malamute’s in 2001, and my 2nd in 2006. I live in the mountain west and ride evey day there is new snow. My first pair remains my go-to boot for snowshoeing, while I ride in my 2nd pair.

I chose the Malamute first, because I read of 2 Iditirod mushers who wore the boot for their race. Figured if it met their demands, it would work for me. Turned out to be so true!

I pretty much point my board down the hill and - all day, in all conditions - this boot is simply the very best. Warm, responsive, stiff - but with great “feel” - and takes a real big licking and keeps on ticking.

Doubt I’ll ever wear anything but a Malamute.
