MSR Fury Tent 2-Person 4-Season
October 22, 2010
I think all three are equally strong, and storm worthy. The Asgard and the Mountain 25 are about the same size, both have two interances, but the Mountain 25 has one large and one small vestibule with the Asgard having two medium sized ones. The Fury has only one interance, but the vestibule is a good sized one. The Mountain 25 is the heaviest, the Asgard is in the middle, and the Fury is the lightest. The Fury has the largest floor plan, with the other two being almost equal in square footage, but the Asgard has the most verticle wall which maximizes it's internal space making it feel larger. I think MSR tents are built better then TNF, but I'm not saying the Mountain 25 isn't a solid contender. If weight is the most important factor I like the Fury, if you want the most livable space go with Asgard, but if you want a very livable tent that isn't $600 the Mountain 25 is a good choice (a little heavy). My personal favorite is the Fury. I feel it gives you a super tough tent with the perfect mix of livability and low weight.

I believe that the Elixer doesn't have the Torso Flo hem to pit zips. It just has regular pit zips. The advantage to the hem to pit zip is it allows you to vent your entire core not just the pits, and it also can be worn as a poncho.

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Ultra Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season
July 19, 2010
Both tents are stable, and strong. The Copper Spur is a lighter tent, and has equal living space and vestibules. Both tents are well ventilated for 3 season use. The Copper Spur has a tapered floor plan which makes it dirrectional. If two are sleeping in it you will want to put your heads at the wide end of the tent. If your campsite isn't perfectly level you will want to put the head end of tent on the uphill side. The tent also has a large vent on the head end of the tent that works best if it is placed facing into the wind. All those factors can make picking your tent location more difficult than it would be for the Hubba Hubba. The Hubba is a rectangular tent so there is no head or foot end, and it can be placed in either dirrection. The Hubba has a better waterproof coating on the floor, 5000mm vs. 1500mm. It isn't going to make that big of a difference, but it will be easier for water to work through the Copper Spur's floor than the Hubba Hubba. All of that being said the Copper Spur is a higher end ultralight tent, and great choice. The Hubba Hubba is not considered ultralight, but it is good tent too. If money isn't an issue you may also consider the MSR Carbon Reflex 2. It shares the same basic design as the Hubba Hubba, but is much lighter. It weighs about a half pound less than the Copper Spur, and is just as stable and spaciouse.

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 Ultra Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season
July 19, 2010
I'm going to assume that your tent came with the same stakes as my friends Copper Spur 1, and yes they will hold just fine. The stake looks like a cross from the top. Those four ribbs add much more surface area than a conventional stake, and thus giving the stake much more holding power. You might find lighter stakes out there, but probably not ones that will hold any better.

Arc'teryx Altra Backpack 65 - Men's - 3967-4577cu in
July 18, 2010
Even the Bora was not totaly waterproof, but with the water resistant zippers it was better than the Altra Series. The pack's material is waterproof, but the zippers aren't. I put my gear in roll top waterproof bags, and carry a rain cover too. If you are looking for a totaly waterproof pack that has the same suspension take a look at the Arcteryx Naos 70 or Arrakis 65.
In regards to Hudson Hiker's comments about this pack and materials not being durable. I have this pack and find it's materials and construction to be superior to other packs on the market. When compared to the Bora series the construction is different, but I don't feel it is inferior. The pack has very thick material in all of the high wear areas, and even has some foam padding sandwitched between two layers of material on the bottom of the pack. I my opinion it would take much effort to rub a hole in this pack, and it sounds like it was either a manufacturing defect or misuse. The pack carries a lifetime warranty, but they won't cover damage from abuse.

Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking System
July 18, 2010
The new stove comes with a stabilizer base that you had to buy seperately before(cool), a larger valve knob(very useful), redesigned ignitor(better, but still can be unreliable), and a temperature indicator built into the pot insulator(neat, but unnecessary). Overall a better product, and it doesn't cost any more!

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's
July 17, 2010
Yes this jacket will keep the rain out for everyday use. The only difference between the Proshell and Paclite the durability. They are different materials, but they work the same for keeping water out. I have worn this jacket in some heavy spring rains here in the Southeast. One in particular last for 7 hours, and it was really coming down. My boots started leaking, but my OR Foray Jacket and Pants held strong. If you are working hard and sweating while it is raining heavy the sweat vapor won't be able to escape fully... So some moister will collect inside the jacket, but it isn't rain coming in. You will really have to working up a good sweat for this to happen, but that will be the case with any rain jacket on the market.

MSR Carbon Reflex 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season
May 13, 2010
I agree with what Steve Masters has said about comapring the Carbon Reflex with BA tents. I would like to add that the BA tents are made with less durable fabrics, and they have less waterproof coating than the MSR. I have owned the BA Seedhouse and the Carbon Reflex, and I prefer the MSR. It isn't because the Seedhouse isn't a good tent. I didn't like the fact that the fly will drip into the tent when you open the door, and the front entrance is a pain when you have gear in it. The Fly creek seems to be a simular design to the Seedhouse, and probably will have the same issues. The Copper Spur on the other had is an outstanding tent. A friend of mine has it and it solves the problems of the Seedhouse with a side entrance, and an overhanging fly above the door. It also has two doors which is better than the Carbon Reflex, but as I said above the material and waterproofing aren't as good as the MSR.

Arc'teryx Naos 45 Backpack - 2500-2870cu in
May 13, 2010
I am a paddler, and the main compartment is just as waterproof as any other dry bag. If the bag is totaly submerged in water for a long period of time water will work it's way in, but it will definately keep your stuff dry if you swin a rapid. Just this past weekend I hiked a trail in North Georgia that had 20 waist deep river crossing on it. On one of the crossing I slipped and fell in the water up to my chest. While I didn't stay in the river long, all of my gear stayed dry.

MSR Autoflow Gravity Filter
March 24, 2010
The filter is rated at 1500 liters, but if the water you put into the filter is clean of most particulate it will last much longer than that. If the water you are gathering is filled with sediment simply use a bandana to prefilter it. If you want to finish the AT, don't carry 2 extra filters. If the filter fails you will be able to find one along the trail. Just about every town you come accross will have an outfitter, and they all carry high end name band gear. I would carry a chemical treatment as a backup, and always backflush the filter element.

MSR Autoflow Gravity Filter
March 24, 2010
Yes, large particles do settle in the bottom of the bag, and there is also a fine mesh filter over the output.
As far as the Platypus clean stream I feel the MSR is the better system for several reasons. The filter elements are exactly the same, but several other features makes all the difference. One, the MSR has a large nylon strap with a buckle that allows you to strap it to any tree you come across, but the Platypus simply has the handles on the bags. Second, the MSR has a universal addapter so you can use it with the reservoirs or bottles you already have. That way you don't have to carry around a "Clean Bag" that serves no purpose but to temperarily hold the filtered water. Third, with the roll top on the MSR bag you can pressurize the bag by continuing to fold the bag over and over on itself. This helps you force water through the filter, and I find it helpful if I am refilling my reservoir on the go while it is still inside my backpack. I think these three differences are what sets the MSR filter ahead of the Platypus, but as far as filtering the water they are exactly the same. Some may feel different, but that is my two cents!

MSR Autoflow Gravity Filter
March 24, 2010
I have had some trouble on a couple of occasions. Sometimes when I try to backflush the filter it won't flow, but if you simply let a half liter or so flow through the filter correctly it then will then backflush. This only happens at home after a trip to the backcountry, and has never let me down in the field.

Osprey Packs Ariel 55 Backpack - Women's - 3400cu in
March 23, 2010
It really depends on the gear you are using. Is your gear compact, or does it tend to be more bulky? Also, are you using winter gear, like cold weather sleeping bags, 4 season tent, etc.? I tend to be a minimalist, and my gear is very compact. I can use a 55 liter pack for a 2 night 3 day trip in Spring-Fall, but need a larger pack with winter gear. That dosen't even take into consideration your ski gear. I would take the 65 liter pack. It is always better to have too much room than too little. The pack can always be compressed smaller.

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Thermo 9 Sleeping Pad
December 21, 2009
This pad is an insulated air pad. Therefor it's R value is much greater than 1. They don't have it published here, but I know for a fact that the POE Ether Thermo 6 Pad has an R value of 7.8 on the torso and 6.8 on the legs. The only difference between these two pads that I can see is the Thermo 6 is a mummy cut, and the Thermo 9 is a rectangular and 5 inches wider. One can only assume that this pad is inslutated as well as the Thermo 6.

He can put water and ice from any source he can find into the water bottle, and it will keep him from getting sick. As far as him using it I can' say, but it doesn't get much easier. Just fill the bottle, which looks like any other sports water bottle, and drink away.

MSR Reactor 1.7L Stove System
November 26, 2009
I have used a jetboil in the past, and really like it. I then went the ultrlight route with a snow peak gigapower, and ti pot setup. I found the weight savings were negated by the extra fuel needed to be carried due to the poor fuel efficiency. I am now interested in purchasing either a reactor or jetboil again. I get how much better the reactor is, but the things I don't like is you don't get any measurement marks other than .5, 1, and 1.5 liters, and I would have to carry a seperate mug for hot drinks. I know it doesn't sound like much, but every ounce counts. I don't want to have to carry extra gear just to make the heavier reactor do everything I need. So my question is, does the reactors advantages over the jetboil enough to offset the added weight and gear. Keep in mind I backpack mostly in the southern appalachian mountains in all seasons, but temps rairly get bellow zero. When I do travel west to backpack it is always in summer.

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System
November 6, 2009
Ok, the Jetboil will have the advantage in almost every catagory. It is more fuel efficient, more compact, and easier to use. Weight is probably a wash. The Windpro has a few advantages. It will be more stable due to the remote canister and because it has a generator tube it will allow the canister to be inverted. This is an advantage in extreme cold... by extreme I mean temps well below freezing.

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular
November 6, 2009
I found that when using a BA sleeping bag you will need a pad that is rated much warmer than the temps you are expecting to encounter. I know they say that the insulation in a conventional bag gets compressed under you, and is rendered useless. I found out the hard way that compressed insulation is better than none. I am a naturaly cold sleeper, and don't want to discourage anyone from this pad or BA sleeping bags. Just keep in mind that you may need a much wrmer pad for your bag or a closed cell foam pad under everything to keep warm. I have this sleeping pad, but use it with conventional bags and sleep fine down to single digits.
