Patagonia Powder Bowl Pant - Men's

Patagonia Powder Bowl Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2012

Have to say,
these are my new favorite pants. Patagonia has really done it here with the bombproof goretex and perfect articulated fit. there is a tiny bit of insulation that stays out of your way and keeps you warm. Plus they keep you completely dry. well placed pockets and great zippers finish off an all around amazing pant.

Marmot Basic Work Glove

Marmot Basic Work Glove

Rating for this product: 4 January 13, 2012

these gloves are great for anything outside in cold weather, either work or play, and don't get TOO hot. They have a simple lining and durable leather outer that stands up to an amazing amount of wear and tear.

Marmot has some significant quality control issues with them however......

I tried on 10 pairs of M just to find one that fit my hand the correct way. Some had narrow fingers, some had wide fingertips, even the wrist opening had size variations. My biggest issue though was on the variation of leather quality.

Don't get me wrong, I love these gloves. But I very well could have ended up with a pair that I hated if I hadn't tried on every medium they had at REI.

Stoic Breathe Composite Zip T - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 10, 2012

this makes a great mid to heavy weight layer when running on brisk days. the added chest pocket is a nice bonus for an id/credit so you don't have to bring your favorite fanny pack on your next training run.

sleeves are long and do a great job keeping wrists and hands warm but thumb-holes would also be a nice addition.

Stoic Breathe Composite Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 January 9, 2012

Nice pant, weird fit. Stoic has some nice fabrics and good ideas with their products....but like everyone says the fit is pretty strange. Too much material in the waist, and on the butt/crotch. bunching is a major issues with these. sadly you can even see it on the product pictures....ewwww look at that carbon/carbon shot!

i do have to say though they keep you pretty warm

SmartWool PhD Ski Medium Sock

SmartWool PhD Ski Medium Sock

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2012

Without a doubt Smartwool PHD's are the best socks you can buy for skiing. The socks are actually pretty amazing for anything be it hiking or lounging in a chilly house.
PHD's win with a perfect fit, just the right amount of cushion, no smell, warmth, and most importantly they STAY PUT!

I love these socks because you put em on and never have to worry about pulling them up or cutting off your circulation. buy a few and it will be money well spent.

Stoic Merino Ski Socks - 2 Pair

Stoic Merino Ski Socks - 2 Pair

Rating for this product: 4 January 9, 2012

I love backcountry.com, and want to love stoic products but found these socks to be a little lacking. The footbed and shin cushion are great but the socks have some work to do in the fit department. I'm 5'10" 165 and the large fits my foot perfectly, however the elastic at the top of the calf must be for someone with the smallest legs on the planet. By the end of the day I had a huge compression line digging into my calves and i dont even have big legs!

also i was a little disappointed they were less than 1/2 wool....but that is my fault for not checking...its pretty clear in the description

These socks deserve 3 stars but get a 4 because of Backcountry.com's legendary return policy. could not be any happier with the service.

K2 SideStash Ski

December 31, 2011

The sidestash are an amazing ski and will be a blessing in powder and in the backcountry. the nice part about them is that they are not such massive planks that they are worthless on a mediocre day.
your size sort of depends on how aggressive you are. 183s will last as you improve though.....

Sanuk Donna Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 28, 2011

i have a pair of the mens sanuks and could not stop my girlfriend from stealing them so i finally broke down and shelled out for a matching pair. now she will not shut up about them and has already bought another pair in another color to show her true love.
sanuks are too comfortable. but they can fit a little bit big on gals....if your typically a half size, size down as they will stretch a bit. we had to jump all the way down to 5's

and no matter what do not let friends try them on....because you will not get them back....until you have to buy another pair in exchange

hammocks are notorious for not being good for more than one... even the most enthusiastic spooner will get tired of having another persons elbow jammed into them because of the hammocks curvature. these packable hammocks are great, for one. i wouldnt bank on a long nights sleep. mostly because they only attach at one anchor point.

if you dont need it to be travel friendly i would get a rope/cloth hammock with a spreader.....this is the wooden piece where the rope is threaded through, which makes it so each side of the hammock are not forced together due the the weight in the middle

it can be separated into different layers. but heres the kicker....its only really two layers depending on perspective. the jacket can be worn in the following ways

option 1: the liner
option 2: the outer shell
option 3: the liner, inside the outer shell

because it can be worn in 3 different variations people are often fooled and think they are getting 3 separate pieces

If your rockin an iphone these will do just about everything with ease. and the big button on the remote kicks ass when wearing gloves. They even work with voice control. stay away from the twin tip audio, where the volume control works through one cord and the skip song feature through the other. These are all integrated, sound great, and are easy to control when your thick enough to bump ABBA instead of listening to the babe next to you on the lift

what a fit

Swany X-Cell II Glove - Men's

Swany X-Cell II Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 4, 2011

I have never had a glove that is so comfortable, warm, and well fitted for my hands. One thing i absolutely love about them is how much dexterity you feel, at the ends of the fingers there is not an overkill amount of material that bunches up and they still manage to keep you super warm. I have been doing mostly night skiing this season and those chairlifts can get mighty cold during night. with these my hands have never been cold or wet, and they give me enough movement to easily control my ipod.
the closure system is pretty nice as well, one easy grab synch on one side can be pulled to tighten, while the traditional squeeze can loosen (as well as a pull on the opposite side of the glove) the pulls and bracelet (so you dont drop em' ding dong!) are not cumbersome either.

In response to the comments about durability mine have been doing well so far, the only place I could guess that would break down would be on the outside of pinky or thumb, where the nose/goggle wipes are super soft leather. be careful if your a low turner who drags his hands.

I love their comfort, warmth, and fit. but i could see how people would be turned off by durability... just buy them through backcountry... a little review of their return policy should give you the piece of mind you need

PAIN IN THE ASS

Smith Skullcandy Twin-Tip Link Helmet Audio Kit

Smith Skullcandy Twin-Tip Link Helmet Audio Kit

Rating for this product: 2 January 3, 2011

If you are an iphone 4 user these headphones are an extreme pain in the butt. especially when your used to the controls that already come on your cheap white headphones. I have such a hard time saying this because i had such high hopes. heres the problem.....the double shot gives you two cords....unfortunately the controls on the wire dont account for this. If i use one cable, the volume control is amazing and super easy to use...but the pause/play/skip does not function. If the other cable is used, i can pause and play my music.....but i have no control of volume. The controls could be awesome but they simply dont work. All that said, the sound quality on the headphones is great and they zip in perfectly to my helmet. I just wish i could control my music

Sherpa Adventure Gear Lungta Hybrid Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 23, 2010

This jacket is a pretty basic shell. very good wind blockage and good waterproofing, but the durability of the fabric comes into question for me when i read that its recommended for skiing. This is an awesome shell for wet days and perfect for spring/fall hiking season, mostly cause it packs down well and can handle wet weather with ease. It fits a bit large around the trunk leaving a good amount of room for insulating layers. I got it on steepandcheap for around 80, and for the money there is not a better deal out there. This jacket could be a good go to for warmer ski days, but in heavy powder or rain go for something with a skirt

Look Cycle Keo Classic Road Pedal

Rating for this product: 5 April 28, 2010

Buy these as your first road pedal and never go back. Although they are quite a bit heavier than the Keo 2 max carbon pedals they more than make up the difference in durability and power transfer. In addition, if you have a multipurpose road bike.....ie not racing in a full kit everyday, these pedals provide a great platform when wearing street shoes.
You can easily adjust your clip retention, and they are very comfortable. The only drawback to me has been the bulky cleats when compared to the options offered by speedplay.

Native Eyewear Dash XP Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 April 28, 2010

These glasses are extremely comfortable but can wary on the two sides of durability. The frames can stand up to being sat on and dropped multiple times. However after what I would call light use, the rubber nosepieces continually fall out, rubber cement does a fine job to fix 'em though. The lenses are great, mine are cracked after heavy use but they are the best I have ever had. The frame vents and interchangeable lenses are great for cycling. Native's customer service is as good as they say, they replaced my cracked lenses without question.

Aussie Gear Trunk

Eagle Creek ORV Trunk 30 - 6000 cu in

Eagle Creek ORV Trunk 30 - 6000 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 27, 2010

This trunk is no doubt the BEES KNEES. As a guy that has consistently been a backpacker traveller I bought this gear bag for a 6 month period that I would be in australia, more of a "homebase" with excursions sort of travel. It is by far big enough for a long period of time with needs for tons of different gear.

I was able to pack it full of my dSLR camera gear and clunky tripod, hiking boots, double tent, gear, and more than enough room for plenty of around the town clothes and even some dress clothes. The gearbox made for boots is a lifesaver in that, you can use it for all your gnarly clothes that you just cant find the time to wash (boot cleaning takes zero time). This box became my permanent stink sack for worn out clothes i used while volunteer/working for room and board on a banana farm in the far north of Queensland australia.
The zippers on the bag are robust, the tie downs great, and volume is perfect. In addition the adustable pull bar is perfect for a now lazy traveller like myself. Lastly those wheels kick ass! they can handle some rough terrain without to much trouble. My only warning to a light traveller like myself, this is a BEHEMOTH. Unless you are going for an extended trip and essentially need to bring your life, go for a hiking pack. It is an excellent yet less mobile alternative as long as you stay small town bound. I brought a overnight pack inside of it as well for my backpacking trips.
get this and a small personal bag for long long trips.
