Simply fantastic!

injinji Outdoor Quarter Crew Toe Sock- NuWool

injinji Outdoor Quarter Crew Toe Sock- NuWool

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2009

I've tried many a brand of merino wool socks, and the Injinji are hands down my favorite.

They're not the absolute lightest weight, but still fairly light (my size large nuwool outdoor quarter socks weight almost exactly 2oz / pair) while being extremely comfortable.

It may take a few wearings to get used to the idea of "toe socks" but after your first decent hike/trek in them, your feet will thank you, as they prevent rubbing of the toes, and as such really do delay the onset of blisters.

These are the only socks I'm brining on my John Muir Trail hike, and will likely be my go-to sock when I attempt the PCT as well.

cheers.

Westcomb Specter LT Hooded Jacket - Men's

November 12, 2009

I'm not quite your size (my chest is around 41, my shirt size 15.5/35) and the size medium fits me close to the body. The jacket has a fairly narrow athletic cut, with just enough room under to comfortably layer my montbell ultralight down inner jacket (also a size medium.)

I'd likely recommend the large, try it out, and you can always exchange for the XL if need be, backcountry's return/exchange process is simply fantastic.

good luck, cheers!

Even better than expected!

Westcomb Specter LT Hooded Jacket - Men's

Westcomb Specter LT Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 16, 2009

So I took a shot in the dark and ordered the Westcomb Specter LT Hooded jacket, black color, size medium, and it arrived today.

Compared to my last eVent jacket (REI shuksan) which weighed some 3.5+ ounces more than the manufacturer's quoted weight, this jacket is almost 1/2oz lighter than listed, weighing 10.66oz.

First impression of the jacket, high quality construction, love the minimalist design and attention to detail, especially the velour lining on the chin guard.

I'm 5'11" and around 180lbs, and around an average build, 40" chest, 32" waist (ever so slightly out of shape) and the medium fits my frame nicely, and as I continue to get back in shape in preparation for my PCT attempt, I presume it will come to fit me perfectly, as there is a definite "athletic" cut to the jacket.

The jacket has a decent bit of room in the shoulders and upper body area for ease of movement, and layers nicely over my Montbell Ultralight down jacket (also size medium.)

Overall, fantastic jacket, and I can't wait to give it a proper trial in the rain/snow in the coming weeks!

Bottom line, if you're counting ounces, buy it, you won't be disappointed!

MSR Titan Titanium Kettle

MSR Titan Titanium Kettle

Rating for this product: 5 October 13, 2009

Wow, not much more to say than just wow!

Ok, so the pot is a tad on the small size at 0.85L, but when you realize that it weighs only 4.73oz (the actual measured weight of my kettle) its still plenty big enough for heating water for dehydrated backpacking foods, or for single person cooking.

The lid is probably the best part, stays on snug, with a handle that can be "locked" in the upright position, so you never burn yourself trying to remove the lid!

I absolutely recommend this pot/kettle to everyone looking for a titanium pot around 1L in capacity.

Westcomb Specter LT Hooded Jacket - Men's

October 13, 2009

Can anyone with this jacket in size Medium take an accurate weight measurement (in grams preferably) and post it?

Right now I'm, trying to decide between this jacket, or the backcountry.com stoic eVent jacket, mainly for ultralight backpacking, but it will be worn around town in the rain too.

cheers,

Great lightweight socks

Darn Tough Back-Road Merino Wool 1/4 Mesh Sock DO NOT USE

Darn Tough Back-Road Merino Wool 1/4 Mesh Sock DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 February 11, 2008

Hard to really elaborate on socks, but I wear these all the time, and they hold up well, and keep my feet dry and comfortable. A little too light for long treks, but i suppose that's what all these "hiking" socks are for anyway. All in all, I'd buy them again!

Great lightweight shirt

Patagonia Capilene 2 T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 2 T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 11, 2008

This is a great lightweight shirt that breathes well, and wicks sweat/moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable. Not as good at odor retention as the wool series, which is the only reason it gets 4 instead of a 5. All in all, great for warm to medium temperature activities.

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Mens

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2008

Title says it all, fantastic design, lightweight, durable, well ventilated, and just generally easy to wear. The buttons take a few uses to "break in" but otherwise, this is a fantastic shirt, and my new full-time hiking shirt.

Snow Peak Titanium Spork

Snow Peak Titanium Spork

Rating for this product: 4 January 29, 2008

This is a great spork, and for 99% of people buying it, it will be perfect, but for that last 1%, the die hard ultralighters, there are still lighter titanium sporks on the market

Perfect for lightweight connivence

Snow Peak Trek 900 Titanium Cookset

Snow Peak Trek 900 Titanium Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2008

Not much to say except that its the perfect lightweight set for anyone going solo that appreciates having more than just a mug. The lid that doubles as a frying pan & plate is brilliant, and I've yet to have any problems with the lid popping off. To top it all off, it came in under weight, my set, with mesh bag weighs 5.83oz as opposed to the listed 6.2! Versatile, and lighter than the manufactures listed weight = an ultralighters dream!

Excellent outdoor glasses!

Maui Jim Runabout Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 January 10, 2008

I've had these glasses for a year now (bought them new years eve 2006 right before a trip to tahoe the following week) and absolutely love them.

The titanium frames and the evolution lenses make for a pair of glasses that are virtually weightless, but offer a stronger lens than polycarbonate.

I highly recommend anything in the titanium elite frames and will continue to swear by the new evolution lenses, absolutely fantastic pair of glasses!
