Sea To Summit Xtl Sleeping Bag: 19 Degree Down

August 8, 2012

Id say if you go Sea to Summit, it seems they run a little shorter, so I might stick with regular. I own the 19 Degree (long at 6'1"), and I have owned Marmot 800-fill down bags. Sea to summit is of much higher quality, unquestionably. The Nanoshell technology seems to do its job, my bag stays drier than others without a waterproof shell, as well as being highly breathable. The degree level is up to you; they both have the same feature set.

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

July 22, 2012

I have a few questions about this jacket compared to the Theta SV. Will these two fit the same, besides back length? Does this jacket have a drop tail? Would the pit zips be the same length? Do the inside pockets have the same volume (big enough to hold skins?) Does this have the upper elastic cord in the pockets? Does the hood have all the same adjustments? It says it does but I don't see any adjustment cords in the pictures. Anything else I should know thats different between the two jackets?

Outdoor Research Sentinel Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 July 18, 2012

Got the pewter, doesnt look anything like the picture. Much lighter textured color, not a solid dark gray. At 6'1" 190lbs, the large was much too tight in the shoulders.

Best Pants

Norrøna Svalbard Flex1 Softshell Pant - Men's

Norrøna Svalbard Flex1 Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2012

Sweet pants, more water-resistant and more breathable than my Stoic Overhangs, but also set me back quite a bit more. Pretty lightweight, and has 5 zippered pockets, although I doubt I'll really ever use the knee pockets because it is annoying to have something resting against my knee when hiking, etc. Will be using these for 3+ seasons hiking, mountaineering, and splitboading once I get a hardboot setup (they wouldn't fit over regular snowboard boots). The belt system works well.

I ordered the Bungee Cord, size L, and at 6'1", 190, these pants fit perfectly. Only problem was the picture shows a light brown color with contrasting dark brown zippers. The pants I got are a lot more gray with matching zippers. I like the pants in the picture better, but the ones I got are just fine so I'll be keeping them. They just look nothing like the picture, which happens to be on the Norrona website as well. Other than that, I probably wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair if I had an excuse.

Osprey Packs Variant 52 Backpack - 2990-3356cu in

January 13, 2012

The Arrakis 50 is a completely waterproof bag, and twice the price of the Variant 52. If the temps will be below freezing the whole time, which I'm guessing they would be in Norway during the winter, so the waterproof aspect would probably be unneeded. The Variant is probably the right choice.

Hope this helps.

Voile Splitboard Climbing Skins

December 14, 2011

Just got these skins, and took them out for the first time yesterday. It was my first time splitboarding, and I don't ski, so it was the first time I had used skins at all. I had them cut by a shop, and when I went to take them out of the bag at the start of the run, they had been stuck glue on glue and were somewhat difficult to separate. My friend told me that storing them glue on glue was bad for the skins, and would eventually ruin the glue, however some of the reviews Ive read seem to indicate otherwise. I lost the tag with instructions, so I wanted to make sure I am doing the right thing while storing.

So, a) how should I store at room temp? With cheat sheets? glue on glue? Roll it up?
b) same question but for alpine conditions?
c) anything else you think I might need to know about storage

Thanks, Ian

Stoic Bertol Guide Softshell Pant - Men's

November 30, 2011

Actually, the Stoic Bertol Guide Pants utilize a different Schoeller material, however I'm not quite sure which one. The difference can be seen in the compositions of the Schoeller materials: (94% Nylon, 6% Spandex) for the Bertol Guide, whereas (73% Nylon, 18% Polyester, 9% Spandex) for the backcountry.com tour se.

As for insulation, it says the lining is midweight, so think a midweight pair of long underwear. The backcountry.com tour se does not have any form of insulation. The only other difference is weight, as far as I can tell comparing the specs. The backcountry.com tour se weighs 6oz more.

I may be wrong, as I own neither of these pants, so feel free to correct me if you know otherwise. I would also appreciate someone from BC chiming in, as they would probably be able to give a better explanation than me.

Hope this helps.

Nice Jacket, Odd Fit

MontBell Ex Light Down Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ex Light Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 27, 2011

Nice piece, obviously one of the lightest on the market. Has no hand pockets, as others have mentioned, but why would you need hand pockets on a piece that is meant to be layered? I am in love with my Montbell Alpine Light Down Parka, which, with and XL seems perfectly tailored to my body (6'1", 185). However, this jacket in XL did not fit. I listened ad read that the jacket was short, so I was expecting that, however the sleeves are just giant! There seems enough excess material in the sleeve that they could have had a longer, better fitting jacket than what the final product was, at least for me anyways. IMO, I would try on before you buy so you know how the fit will be. On a positive note, the 900-fill down is superb and the outer layer of fabric is durable enough to withstand a decent amount of abuse.

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Men's

November 2, 2011

The Marmot Stockholm, Mountain Hardwear Hunker Down Jacket, and Montbell Frostline Parka would all be excellent choices, all around $250. The Montbell, however has the highest quality down and is probably the best for the money, but you may like the other ones better. I just love Montbell Down products, as does everybody who owns one.

Hope this helps.

Perfect Backpack

Mammut Nirvana Pro 35 Pack - 1650cu in

Mammut Nirvana Pro 35 Pack - 1650cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 31, 2011

This backpack is awesome. It is perfect for a long day in the backcountry. The fit is very adjustable and comfortable. The ski carry and gear loops work well, as well as the helmet carry. The back entry is prefect for grabbing out something you had to pack in the bottom. The front pocket is meant for your avalanche gear, and my barely fits in. Otherwise, you can just carry it in the big pocket.

This pack is my favorite that I have for snowsports, long day hikes, and pretty much anything I need it for. I considered many other packs, including packs from Osprey, Dakine, and Arc'teryx, however decided with this one because of the design, fit, and features. I cannot say enough good things about Mammut.

Any questions feel free to ask. Hope this helped.

MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka - Men's

October 29, 2011

This is more of a technical jacket, geared towards backpacking as it uses much thinner materials then casual wear down jackets would use. The Marmot Stockholm, Mountsin Hardwear Hunker Down Parka, or Montbell Frost Line Down Parka would be two great alternatives. Either way, Montbell Down products ROCK!!

Hope this helps.

Norrona Pants

Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro Shell Pant - Men's

Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro Shell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 29, 2011

Let me start by saying that these pants are really nice. Extremely waterproof, as to be expected with the Pro Shell 3L. Fit is true to size, I am 6'1" 185lbs, 35" waist, and went with the large. The color, however, was slightly off. The green is a little lighter than pictured, almost lime green. The difference is not much, but definitely noticeable, and the color does not go with my jacket nearly as well as it would have. Pockets are nice, and the bib is easy to zip off, however it is a bit hard to zip up. The material on the bib is some sort of spandex, but IMO, for a $500 pair of pants, they could have used a nicer material (i.e. Shoeller Dynamic, Polartec Power Shield, etc).

The side zips are 3/4 length, not full length. The gaiters work well. The Aramid material at the bottom is basically the same as Schoeller's Keprotec, however after one day of use one of the patches has frayed a bit in multiple places, while the other one looks brand new. Not exactly what you want in a $500 pair of pants. The material wrapping all the way around the bottom of the pant leg is a nice touch, allowing for full protection around the cuff.

Overall, I liked the pants a lot and was excited to receive them and get to try them out, however I think these pants will be going back.

The North Face Blue Ridge Paclite Jacket - Men's

A medium would be more of a slim fit, whereas the large would be better if you will be using this in cold temps/need to layer. However, THF does have more generous sizing than most. It really just comes down to personal preference.

Arc'teryx Gamma SK Softshell Pant - Men's

September 18, 2011

I'm trying to find a nice pair of softshell pants for this season at Mt. Baker. I am a snowboarder, and need a pair of pants for those days when 3L Pro Shell isn't needed. I am looking for a quite breathable, yet still wind and weather resistant pair of pants for hiking, skinning, spring conditions, etc. What is my best option? I'm lost with the differences in fabrics and such. Hopefully they won't cost more than $300, but if its worth the price I'm willing to pay. Thanks for any insight into my dilemma .
