Kelty Orb Tent 2-Person 4-Season

December 10, 2008

Set up the tent the night before and got hit by a small blizzard. Never felt the tent so much as shake, and slept perfectly sound. Woke up in the morning with all of the white stuff on top...

Lorpen Merino Light Hiker Sock - 2-Pack - Men's

Lorpen Merino Light Hiker Sock - 2-Pack - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 25, 2010

These are awesome. Pretty much everything I look for in a pair of socks. Slip em on and its like instant comfort... there's no odd stitching to be felt anywhere, and I love the extra padding on the bottoms and the toe-cap. Extremely soft. Hiked around in them all day and no problems. I even lounge around the house in em, all the time! Another random thing, they actually do seem to help with controlling any odor problems.... I know I was skeptical at first, but i've noticed a difference. Pretty much the perfect pair of light hiking socks around

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

May 6, 2009

I know that for the other thermarest pads they recommend leaving them inflated for storage, but not sure about this one... My guess would be to keep it rolled loosely, but not required to have it inflated because of the difference in materials.

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

May 6, 2009

Whenever I go camping in winter I take my prolite 4 sleeping pad, which has an r-value (insulating/warmth value) of 3.8 I believe. According to thermarest this pad has an r-value of 2.5, so just a little bit less, but amazing for having no internal insulation at all. I have used my pad on the snow itself, in temps down to 0, with no cold spots at all. I would guess this pad would work quite well in winter all well...

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Zip T - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2009

The first thing I have to mention about this jacket is how comfortable it is... its so super soft!! I also love the ability it has to stretch all over, making it easy on and off. Works perfect as a baselayer/liner as it is super warm and pretty light as well. I am really happy with my decision to get one.

The outside shell fabric on this is thicker and more heavy duty, say than that of the Glacier to Glade shell for example. I like this shell quite a bit, and it works great for snow activities. Can take a decent amount of abuse.

The North Face Impulse 1/2 Zip Hooded Pullover - Long Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

This pullover works great for layering or wearing by itself for active conditions in the cooler weather. I use mine on backpacking trips, and as a snowboarding/general winter activity layer. Thumb loops work great for the layering. Really light, but well designed. Love the hood and the full up neck zip to block the wind, or vent when needed...

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 December 12, 2008

If you hate winter camping for the reason of being cold at nights, this sleeping bag will take care of that problem... I stay so warm in this bag that I have had nights where I am pulling myself halfway in and out to regulate my temp, but the bag works like a dream when it nears 0 degrees out, and even a few below the said rating. Another one of my favorite things is the weight of this bag for the warmth it gives. The fill quality of down is great, and it compresses down nicely in a pack, then lofts quickly after you lay it out. Its also decently cheaper than other similarly rated bags, at no sacrifice to the build and material quality. The MH phantom sleeping bag line is the best!

Great tent for all seasons

Kelty Orb Tent 2-Person 4-Season

Kelty Orb Tent 2-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2008

This tent has exeeded my expectations by quite a bit... Honestly I was a little doubtful to how this would hold up compared to other brand name tents, but I have not been dissapointed in the slightest. The tent itself has quite a bit of room inside, making it very comfy for two people, but also able to hold three in a pinch. I really find the giant front vestibule perfect for accomodating all of the winter gear that comes along, especially if dug out and down into the snow a good bit. I have spent many a night inside this tent during strong wind storms and blizzards, and nothing has ever been blown loose. The tent poles make such a strong frame as well, that you can actually climb on top of the tent (although not reccomended...) and have it support you. ;) Works out well on winter backpacking excursions when you have another person to split the weight up with. If planning to use this tent in more mild conditions then you can ditch the fly and get plenty of basic rain protection that way. Lots of vents, keeping condensation down, and also has a very easy color coordinated pole setup. Good job by Kelty on this one.

La Sportiva Miura VS Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Miura VS Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2008

It seems that La Sportiva has once again done it. These shoes are totally sick! I used to love the old Miuras, and they worked great. When it came time to find a new shoe, I considered getting the newer Solutions by La Spotriva, but ended up waiting for these. Like the Solutions this has a really downturned toe, with their P3 platform. A buddy of mine has the Solutions and loves them, but the main difference I have seen is the Miura vs has more edging ability to it. With the radical toe downturn it works great for overhangs, but also for any type of climbing all around. I totally love these shoes. Props to La Sportiva...

Rating for this product: 5 November 26, 2008

The Raven may not be the lightest and most advanced ice axe out there, but it will still get the job done. I have used it many a winter and it has yet to fail me in anything. The wrist strap is super helpful, as the handle has no grip to it... Totally worth it for the price, and will last a very, very long time!

Columbia Titanium Zephyr XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Columbia Titanium Zephyr XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2008

When I went into the market for a new pair or running shoes these ones somehow popped up, and I decided to try em out. So far I have not been dissapointed! I have put quite a few miles on these shoes, and they only now begin to show slight signs of wear... The rubber on bottom wears slightly (of course), and the rubber/plastic pieces around the laces have begun to come loose slightly. Nothing major, or that affects the performance. Still very good grip on surfaces, and also waterproof thanks to the gore-tex (have put the shoe in creeks and rivers, not getting wet feet). Highly recommend these, very much worth it.

Very effecient stove!

Jetboil Helios Guide Cooking System

Jetboil Helios Guide Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2008

Well i'm not suite sure about the above review (there are those defective items), but I feel that this stove deserves a chance for sure! I have never had any problems at all with this stove when I take it out backpacking, and it has always performed +100%. I love the way that everything (fuel stand, stove, windscreen) minus your fuel fits inside either one of these pots. While the 3 liter pot is overkill for most situations, I find the 1 1/2 liter pot to be the perfect size for personal or even cooking for a friend or two. May be slightly heavier, but split things up... Everyone that I go hiking with always enjoys watching the windscreen and how effective it really is. Also the lids for the pans double as plates, so it can help save on "some" weight. A total breeze to set up, and it boils water like no tommorow with the flux-ring pans. Worth every cent, I really do love mine!

Jetboil Helios Cooking System

Jetboil Helios Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2008

This stove is the best! I upgraded from the Jetboil PCS after deciding I wanted a little more cooking ability and options. I have never had any problems at all with this stove when I take it out backpacking, and it has always performed over 100%. I love the way that everything (fuel stand, stove, windscreen) minus fuel fits inside these pots. I find the 1 1/2 liter pot to be the perfect size for personal outings, and even cooking for a friend or two. Everyone always enjoys seeing the windscreen just snap on to the stove base, and then seeing how effective it really is at keeping the flame up and running. The stove base is very very stable, and the flux-ring pots make it near impossible to knock the pot off... Also the lids for the pans double as plates. This stove is a total breeze to set up, it boils water like no tommorow with the flux-ring pans, and it is worth every cent! Love it.

CamelBak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack -3L

CamelBak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack -3L

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2008

This pack is the perfect size and has the perfect amount of features for a small daypack. For me it works 100% how I need it to for mountain biking. It carries plenty of water in the 100oz bladder, and I have never once had a bad taste left from it... Also the bladder is super almost indestructible, the best out there. My only bother is that sometimes I feel like the pack as a whole doesn't hold much cargo, but honestly it holds plenty. I've taken a jacket, snacks, full bladder and more in it at times... Not that you need all that much for ripping down singletrack anyways.

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Sleeping Bag: 45 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 May 19, 2008

This bag is great if you want to keep things super light and compact, but also value quality and performance. This bag is great, being that it is smaller than a Nalgene bottle and super light. I have also found that the temperature rating is slightly conservative by about 5-10 degrees. I have even slept in it when the temp dropped in the low 20's, wearing only base layers and a Mont Bell ultralight down jacket inside.

Rating for this product: 5 May 12, 2008

These pants work great for everything that I need them for. They are actually quite comfortable and freedom permitting, so they don't get in the way while moving around. I appreciate the built-in belt; minimal but helpful. It doesn't get in the way of a pack belt and things like that. These pants also have the nice feature of the bungee style drawcords at the ankles, so that you can roll uo the pant legs and keep them out of the way during rock climbing, or a river crossing. Also very breathable, and as many have said, quick drying. Awesome pants!

Black Diamond Speed 40 Backpack - 2319-2441cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 7, 2008

This pack is great! I found that the pack is large enough to hold pretty much all of my gear for at least an overnight hiking trip, or maybe two if you pack very small and light. A really simple and minimal design that can be stripped even more for super-lightness. Great pockets, features and straps. Only complaint (minor) is that the hydration sleeve inside is a little tight, barely holding most of my 70oz camelbak bladder...
