Sea To Summit Seam Sealed Stuff Sack

Sea To Summit Seam Sealed Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2009

I use this stuff sack in the very abusive activity of adventure riding a motorcycle on horrible dirt roads where the bouncing destroys everything. This stuff sack holds out the rain and it doesn't wear through like most stuff sacks.

This was a gift for my son, he is very pleased with this pack. He carries a massive amount of books and a laptop and this pack looks ideal as a collage pack pack for people who carry larger loads.

Therm-a-Rest Fast And Light Repair Kit

Therm-a-Rest Fast And Light Repair Kit

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

This is too small, too light and too cheap to not have one at the bottom of your stuff sack. I'd hate to get a hole in my cool Neoair pad but I'd like less sleeping on the ground and this repair kit is one of those things that weighs almost nothing and takes up no room.

The hugger is hot

MontBell U.L. Super Stretch Hugger #5 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

MontBell U.L. Super Stretch Hugger #5 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

Well actually I sleep very warm so I guess I'm hot but this bag is perfect for summer camping. We were above 8,000 feet and I think it got down into the 30s and I was plenty warm. The hugger feature really works the bag collapses around your body with the lightest of pressure (this bag is super thin and light) which reduces the volume of air your body is heating. I was dumb and didn't cover up well enough and ended up getting soaked by due and learned that an ultra-thin bag does well but it's got less tolerance so keep that in mind. One good thing is I got up and built a fire to dry out and was ready to spend a good long while but the thin high loft down dried surprisingly fast. It is impressive how well the bag worked for how light it was and even more impressive is how small it stuffs down to. I really like the whole package.

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

I never really noticed that inflatable pads don't insulate well until I got a Neoair. The reflective barrier is noticeable and the internal baffling significantly reduced the bouncy factor so many air pads have. This is a hard core, ultralight, very compact pad that is very comfortable. It's narrow so be ready to spin in place rather than roll about but even sleeping on your side your hips won't poke through.

Keep it vented

Black Diamond Lightsabre Bivy Sack

Black Diamond Lightsabre Bivy Sack

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2009

For traveling ultralight and compact this is a great unit. I didn't like the seam sealing process and wish they would have sent a thinner silicone or advised me to warm the silicone up a bit to make it flow easier. I found that it's best to not zip it up too tightly and make sure the vent at the feet doesn't get blocked, there is a small air space that is coming in contact with your sleeping bag and it can easily get very damp. I ended up with opposing zippers, sleeping bag on the left and bivy on the right, but it seems to work just fine with this bivy.

It's the bomb

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

I love this compression sack, it's small and light and it works fabulously. I put my sleeping bag a thin shirt and down vest in it and for the first time I didn't worry about my gear getting wet because I knew I had enough warm items to get by on. It breaths just enough to make it easy to compress but not so much that water could get in. I crashed on my bike in a stream carrying my gear and it was a comfort to not have a soaked sleeping bag that night.

Adventure Medical Natrapel 8-Hour Wipes - 12 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2009

I'd drink DEET if it would keep the bugs away but my wife is into natural remedies so she got me some of this stuff. I don't know about the 12 hour thing but this stuff did what it was supposed to and kept the bugs off me while setting up camp, cooking and so on. It didn't have the strong DEET chemical smell either.

Black Diamond Skylight Footprint

Black Diamond Skylight Footprint

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2009

I was looking at cool $70 tarps and thought they seemed expensive. I thought I'd try a footprint as a tarp, it works great. This unit is a good size for ultralight camping and it has a good waterproof side that kept me off the wet ground. There is just the right amount of grommets for all good uses as a tarp and it's wider on one end which worked out great to give me more room to have my gear near me on my tarp. I don't know how it is as a footprint but it's a great tarp.

Fox River Rocky Ski Sock

Fox River Rocky Ski Sock

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

I haven't skied in these yet but I tried them on and they were what I can never find -- a good thinner sock. I like the control of a thin sock to alpine ski in. I usually have to resort to a dress sock which have ridges that don't feel good or a thin nylon which don't wear well and give me something that feels like shin bang.

Backcountry.com Cocona Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2009

This is a great shirt, it stretches well and seems very durable. One issue I have is my baby soft skin didn't like the slightly rougher feel of the material but it never chafed on me even after wearing this shirt for five consecutive days of hard wear.

Some good some bad

Marmot Tirol Lumbar Pack - 500cu in

Marmot Tirol Lumbar Pack - 500cu in

Rating for this product: 3 September 14, 2009

This bag has some nice features, it has large holster type holders and they have elastic cords to secure your water bottles which not many lumbar backs don't. It's a fairly large back with well designed pockets and padding and I didn't find it hot of uncomfortable and it didn't bounce around while riding even on horrible downhills. I loaded 2 liters of water, a 6x8 foot tarp, rain jacket, nutrition bars, ipod, headlamp and odd personal effects and the bag worked well. The bad is one of the elastic straps that hold the water bottles broke and one of the zippers came unsticthed. To be fair, I was very hard on it and the forces of riding down hills and over rocks are pretty high but then it only lasted one week of serious battering.

CW-X LiteFit T-Shirt - Short Sleeve - Men's

CW-X LiteFit T-Shirt - Short Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

This is a thin soft comfortable shirt that is more like wearing sunscreen than a garment. I wanted a change of shirt and something to sleep in camping and it's super light and packs small. Being tight and light the shirt also moved like a second skin and did not bunch up while spinning around in my mummy bag. I plan on buying several.
