Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's
December 27, 2008
I have this jacket too, and there is no MP3 pocket or internal pocket. Contrary to what "D" says, this jacket looks very stylish, especially in Abyss.I agree that there should be some better colors. A black would be nice ---------------------------------------------------I wouldn't ever consider wearing it on the mountains, b/c of the looseness of the cuffs and the waist. This is more of a casual wearer for a day of shopping and hanging out with people, but not the best for extended periods outside. It makes for a great spring/fall rainy-weather jacket (minus the hood), or a january noontime/afternoon jacket---------------------------------------------------I have the other carbon shift and it fits me great overall (just a little short for being 6' 4"). D needs a sedative. It does have a wind flap and is a comparable design to the gamma sv. The is the "Shift Element." Not the "Shift Softshell." It is not the updated version of the Shift Jacket with the wrist pocket. The new version of the Shift Jacket is the carbon and carrot colored one. It now has an outside chest pocket versus the wrist pocket, but it does have the interior mp3 pocket.***************************************************I&

Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's

the softshell materials are all three components -a shell, a wind barrier, and a fleece insulation. All this is engineered into a single material. the outer shell provides abrasion resistance, DWR to repel rain and snow, the wind barrier buried inside where it does the most good but protected from damage, and a soft fleece lining for enough insulation for active backcountry tours.---------------------------------------------------Of the different BC.com softshell jackets, this one is the thickest and should keep you plenty warm jotting around town or on casual days. If you plan to do anything really active, you may even find this to be a bit warm. As warmth goes, I'd say this (the Shift Element) is the thickest, the standard Shift is in the middle, and the Rime pullover is the thinnest. All have the same properties that Bill described above, just different fabric weights to them. Really though, the warmth will come from what you choose to put on under it... and since it's nearly windproof, you can use nice, light layers and still be comfortable.

I just got mine about a week ago (and the Carbon color is decent, by the way)... 2 hand pockets, the exterior chest pocket, and an internal MP3 pocket are all you get. The description is incorrect about the interior security pocket, interior chest, and wrist stash pockets.

I'm not certain about being able to manually enter a course in advance, but I know you can save a ride and access it again. There are also 3rd party sites like geoladders.com where people can upload their rides... from there, the route files can be transferred to the GPS before he hits the trail. Personally, I have the Edge705 and absolutely love it! I haven't had any trouble with GPS signals, and never had trouble saving my ride data with either the Motionbased.com or Garmin Connect software. Hope that helps...-Sully

Here's an easy one for anybody who owns this... all the reviews say that the 305 is great for training, but does it have built-in training profiles? More specifically, does it direct you to speed up and slow down to target specific heartrates, or does it just show the real-time data? Thanks,Sully
