Stoic Merino Bliss 150 Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino Bliss 150 Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 July 23, 2010

I had the old backcountry.com version of this shirt and freakin' loved it. Wore holes through the elbows and wore out the thumb loops. This new version has sleeves that are at least 3" too long and a little bit baggier than previously (the body fits about the same as before, but the sleeves are just wrong). Made in Canada if that's enough of a bonus for someone to excuse the poor proportions. I tried to shrink it in the drier, but ended up sending it back. I'm 5'10" and 145 lbs and wearing size small if that helps anyone...

This shirt isn't that well made and is EXTREMEly long

Backcountry.com Logo T-Shirt - Men's

Backcountry.com Logo T-Shirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 May 21, 2010

This shirt is about 6 inches too long I think and I'm not that short. I'm wearing the size Small and am 5'10.5", 145 lbs. The fit is okay except for the length. If you want a tunic for some reason, this shirt might do the trick.

Also about 1.5 inches of stitching along the bottom hem is coming undone, not inspiring since it just arrived from Backcountry yesterday (thanks for the quick shipping as always.) But, honestly, I'm not sure how this shirt got so many high ratings. I might send it back even though it was only $9.

Backcountry.com Merino Wall T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Merino Wall T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 6, 2010

Just got this out of the bag (super fast, I ordered it on monday at 2pm and it's here, wednesday at around 7pm). Out of the bag, this shirt looks awesome. The small fits just right on me (5'11" 145lb). A little tighter than most t-shirts, but just barely. Sleeves are maybe 1-2 cm longer than a normal T-shirt. Doesn't look weird or anything, but noticeable. The "wall" print on the front has an interesting texture somewhere between a nice screen-print and those band shirts you have with really thick design on the front. The weirdest detail about this shirt is it has a faux v-neck (I don't know what else to call it), check the picture above to see what I'm talking about. Finally, it's a tad scratchier than my old Merino Bliss, but less scratchy than my Icebreaker SuperFine 190 Tech T, (which I hate), so I'm going to rank it in between those two.

Good loft. Layerable. Great Price. (Thanks SAC!)

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2009

Size:
I'm 5'10", 150 lbs and the small fits perfect. If you have wide hips for whatever reason, this might not be your jacket. It is very snug down there, the girlfriend tried to steal it and couldn't get it to zip (she's the same volume/height as me, just to different proportions...thank god.)

Layering:
In terms of layers, you can layer a thinner fleece beneath, eg. the Prime Agnello (discontinued). It's got about an inch of loft, but the Rime Pullover Jacket has just enough room to fit this guy underneath. You can tell they weren't designed for each other though, the Luft is about an inch longer than the Rime up front (pretty similar cut otherwise), but really not a big quibble. Between the three, I imagine I can handle any Colorado weather quite toastily.

Color:
Yes, you can see some feathers underneath the highlighter lime color. Yes, it's a borderline hideous color. It's a down jacket. You're wearing it to stay warm. Put a shell layer over it if you're tired of people commenting about how they have to wear shades to stand near you. At least you'll be easier to find when you get lost in the wilderness in subzero temperatures.

Backcountry.com Goat Klean Kanteen - 27 oz

November 12, 2009

Does backcountry sell any that have the plastic cap instead of the partially metal cap? My friends' Klean Kanteens all have a broken cap (except the plastic ones) and even for $14 I'd rather not have to replace the cap eventually.

Nice for the slenderly built

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 7, 2009

Just got one of these off of steep and cheap. I'm about 5'10.5" (:-p) and this seems pretty short. It's not ridiculous, but short about like the Prime Agnello, and since I plan to layer them together, it's probably not a bad thing. The back seems a tad longer than the front, which I like. At 145 lbs, the fit is otherwise pretty good. Arms are a good length and have room for long underwear and a light (athletically cut) fleece underneath, although sometimes theres a little bunch under the armpits. Thanks to Geartrade.com & Steapandcheap.com, I have a pretty solid set of layers for the fall for less than $100! This will be a great replacement for my 10 year old Moutain Hardwear Windstopper jacket at half the weight! (Although not quite as warm/windproof, there are always trade-offs).

Icebreaker Glove Liner

Icebreaker Glove Liner

Rating for this product: 4 October 1, 2009

I like these so far. I needed a good liner and like these much better than some slightly thicker synthetic fleece gloves I have. I kinda wish they had some rubberized dots on the fingers, though. The fit seemed a little off, just make sure you realize the sizing is unisex. I wear a medium in most men's gloves and needed a large here. It helped me appreciate Backcountry's great service for the first time.

Backcountry.com Prime Agnello Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

September 15, 2009

Is there a new version of this that is a little longer? How short are we talking about? It doesn't actually sound like my mid-riff would be showing if I got one.

Itchier & Worse Fitting than the Rest

Icebreaker SuperFine 190 Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Icebreaker SuperFine 190 Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 10, 2009

This shirt seems to be *okay* merino wool, but it is much itchier than other shirts eg. my Backcountry.com zip, Patagonia Wool 2 zip and all of my girlfriend's Icebreaker shirts. Because it touches more skin, it's closer to ragg wool stuff I've worn than the merino wool that I've gotten used to. I would send it back if I could, but it was ridiculously on sale, so I'm not too torn up about it. The sizing also seems a bit oversized. I got a small hoping it would be semi-form-fitting, but it isn't it hangs loose and...looks awkward I think.
On the plus side, it does seem slightly more durable than similar weights of wool, but maybe that's just because I wear it much less.
I wouldn't knock it just because it's from China (like some reviewers). I blame Icebreaker for the poor quality. Those hard-working sheep and chinese factory workers do a fine job on plenty of other similar items.

Great Shirt. I wear it at least 4 days a week.

Backcountry.com Merino Bliss Lightweight Long Underwear Top - Men's

Backcountry.com Merino Bliss Lightweight Long Underwear Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 4, 2009

This shirt is great. The neck looks a little shorter online than the one I have; I think my collar is a full 3 inches, basically going up my whole neck. This feature is great for breezy days. The little pocket is kinda cool, but I've only used it about...5 times over the year or so I've had this shirt. Durability is pretty good.* I wear it more than any other shirt so it has a few rough spots, especially around the thumb loops, but that is to be expected. I love the thumb loops for keeping my wrists warm when it's cold enough to wear gloves. I am sad however about the hole developing in the elbow. I have sharp elbows and prop them up a lot when on the computer and eating breakfast, etc...it's happened with every long sleeve merino wool shirt I owned. Anyhow, if it had some reinforced elbows and I could make the high-wear thumb loop areas last forever, I would probably wear this shirt every day it was below 65 degrees out. Note: I've washed this shirt like 5 times in the year I've worn it and it never stinks!

I ended up sending this shirt back recently. The thumb loops and cuffs were just too worn out and I felt like I could only wear it in the backcountry anymore. No more wearing this shirt multiple times per week all winter long. :-(

Very good gloves. Okay liners.

Defcon Goliath Glove

Defcon Goliath Glove

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2009

I like these gloves a lot. I'm still not sure about the liners, which pill after like 5 uses. My ring and pinky fingers also tend to get cold in these gloves after a long day. I think moisture builds up easier because of the fleece liner gloves. In fact, I will probably get a merino or silk liner to replace them. I must mention though, that the E-vent fabric really seems to work. I had a chunk of snow fall into the glove while fixing my bindings and it seemed to dry up just fine, evaporating mostly through the glove. Also, the gloves are pretty heavy (I think they were about 10 oz?) for those backpackers out there, but who cares, they're bomber and will serve skiers and snowboarders quite well.
