Sierra Designs Hurricane Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 3, 2011

These are a utility pant. Don't buy for styling or whatever. I wore these in a round of golf in pooring rain. I stayed dry and they cut the wind. I wore them over pants and pulled them over my shoes - no problems there. I paid full price for them because I was in a bind, but my value for them is more like $30. They pack really small and are pretty light which are two of their strong features.

Marmot Eiger 40 XT Backpack

Marmot Eiger 40 XT Backpack

Rating for this product: 4 May 3, 2011

I bought this pack as a no worries 2 night pack (40lbs) and a day trip backcountry snowboarding pack (yes, snow shoeing). The value for the dollar is great. I found it very comfortable and fit well on my 6'0 190lb frame (large). Daisy chains made it easy to rig the strapping to vertically attach snowboard. I would recommend it - especially for this price range.

I have this pack and sweat-wicking is not something that I'd use to describe the back panel (and its black). I also think that the top straps are pretty thin for running with, especially if you had any substantial weight in there.

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier

March 11, 2010

you shouldn't have any problems with the stirring or agitation, there may be an issue with the minimum diameter of the platypus bottle top. The top should be bigger than the base of the pen in order to fully accept the steripen into the bottle. If you can fit a quarter through the top of the bottle, it should be fine.

Sessions Suburban Stripe Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 10, 2010

I actually have 3 hooded softshells from Sessions. I love these things and have bought one ever year for the last 3 years. I still have them all and still wear them all. I'll wear these for inbounds snowboarding when the weather is in the 40's or warmer. Just put a light or midweight long sleeve shirt underneath and you're perfect. The hood is big enough to pull over your helmet for the chair lift ride. Very water resistant, when they are new, water just beads off, after a couple runs through the washer/dryer, they tend to soak more than when they are new.

When I'm backpacking, I'm usually starving and burning through 5-6,000 calories a day. For the weight of the packaging and the food, I usually can't afford to carry something this heavy that only yields 50 calories. Thats like the equivalent of a film container worth of nuts. But, they are very tasty and do well to "fill" one up.

Rating for this product: 4 March 10, 2010

As far as rub on wax goes, this stuff is above average. The wax itself is very dense and does not rub on too thick (a good thing). If you are looking to touch up your wax job this will work great. If you're looking to wax your whole board...hmmm...consider going with a hot wax. The cork polisher is a bonus feature for sure but realistically you are going to be better off getting a hot wax before you wear out your arm trying to polish your whole board with this thing.

SealLine Storm Sack Dry Bags

Rating for this product: 4 March 10, 2010

I've burried this bag deep in the surf during a beach launch, stuff flying all over the place and the camera and clothes inside remaind dry. There is an extra flap to this bag that is designed to keep things air tight.

I've even used this bag as a rescue throw. I think that if I was going to buy a dry bag as big as 60L, I would probably buy something made with a thicker double sided PVC material. 60L size would work fine inside a backpack or other bag that would be offering the abrasive strength.

Love these pants. I looked for convertible pants for a month before I bought these and am glad I did. Lightweight, cargo pockets, strong materials. My go to pair of pants for the tropics and for summer hiking and backpacking. The bottoms of the legs are wide enough to slip over my shoes so it's a quick and painless process to convert them. Wore them in central america, wore them in sierra wilderness. Only bummer is that my wife does not love these pants and reminds me that I have no style when I wear them - but its 5 stars for me.

The table design is great and for the most part what you're buying. The benches are little wobbly and the actual part that you sit on is made of a rigid plastic that seems to be designed too thin in my opinion (it also acts as the outer case for the table which is a really cool design but again, seems too flimsy). This being said, I haven't broken the bench seats yet. This thing has made it through about 30 days in the desert for 5 guys, so its held up pretty well.

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier

Rating for this product: 3 March 9, 2010

This is a great little tool for some trips. I would not rely solely on any battery powered water treatment for any extended trip but its great for a trip with a buddy, group or frequently travelled trail who could back your water supply up. One could also use boiling or iodine if your water pen failed in the field. I have enjoyed using my pen and have had no problems (stirring is a pain though). If you are prefiltering your water source with some sort of a handkerchief or towel, make sure their there weren't any harsh soaps used the last time it was washed or you'll have some not so tasty but safe to drink water...

Vans BFB Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 9, 2010

I've tried on lots of boots and sort of settled on these as a compromise of a few factors. I love the all black, traditional laces, med/stiff flex, syn leather and bottom tread. The boot is a bit heavy. The fit is a bit small. I'm usually a 10 1/2 and i'm in an 11 in this boot and could still use some more toe room. I switched to a different insole and I am using really thin snowboard socks or just a sock liner. The insole that came with the boot did not offer the comfort needed and I switched to a hiking gel insert. So I've gotten the boots to a place that works great for me, but it has taken some experimentation and a long break in time. I can now where them BC hiking for turns though.

I really needed a waterproof head lamp and didn't want to shell out big bucks so I started with this lamp and added some silicon sealer around all of the edges, seams and at the gasket thereby waterproofing this thing. It has held up through a few night surfs and is going strong. Obviously when the batteries die I'll have to repeat the processes. I'm not sure how much of the waterproof is due to the silicon sealer or the product's design, but the combination has worked great for me. At this price, it fit the bill and I can afford to lose or break one of these, knock on wood.

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2010

I love these shoes and am even considering buying a 2nd pair. They felt true to size for me (10 1/2) but I bought mine in 2008 for a trip to the tropics - not sure if there has been a size change or not. The toe is skuff free, the traction is good and the shoe is holding up great. Footbed is good. They breath OK, but not as good as I would have thought from looking at the mesh type material (better than average breathability though). I have not found these to be very waterproof though, maybe for some splashing or in mud, but not in a rain scenario.

Marmot Kompressor Backpack - 920cu in

Marmot Kompressor Backpack - 920cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2010

I use this for mini hikes and as a stuff sack that doubles as a day pack for backpacking trips with an established base camp. It has a plastic back panel that can be removed to reduce weight or left in to add some rigidity (keyword is "some"). Waist strap is a plus for going over technical terrain too.

The North Face Rock 32 Bx Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

March 9, 2010

I used it in the rain, kept me nice and dry. I wasn't even concerned that it wouldn't. Just make sure to dry it back out when you're back home as this material will not dry in the bag and if you wait too long it could mean some mildew (febreeze?).

The North Face Rock 32 Bx Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

The North Face Rock 32 Bx Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 March 9, 2010

This tent has all the features but keeps the setup simple. I searched for a long time and ended up buying this tent. It has met my needs for my wife and I. The full netting is great for desert camping in the summer when all you want is bug and scorpion protection but need the air flow. This tent has also kept me dry and warm through a thick Nor Cal redwood forest dew in November (call it rain). It is heavy and I have opted not to take it backpacking. If you can split the weight up 2 or 3 ways, it could work for backpacking or as a base camp for spring backcountry ski excursions.

Cloudveil Enclosure Insulated Jacket - Men's

Cloudveil Enclosure Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2010

This is my go to jacket for November through March along the coast of NorCal. It sheds water well, keeps me warm and fits fantastic. Im a 44 inch chest and wear the large. I wore it for a 4 hour hike in a downpour and it kept me bone dry. It comes with me on my summer back packing trips and packs small. I have the '08 model and its been a year now and this jacket is holding up really well despite the thin and lightweight material. The black color is more of a midnight blue than a true black.

Sanuk Hybrid Shoe - Men's

Sanuk Hybrid Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 9, 2010

These are pretty comfortable, more like a sandal than a shoe. I'm usually a 10 and 1/2 and ordered up a 1/2 size to 11, fits good, little loose but that's what sanuks are kinda about.

The vulcanized sole really works with this shoe too.
