Osprey Packs Kestrel 28 Backpack - 1600-1700cu in

February 25, 2012

Its a unisex pack. For a long time, most packs were designed around men. Then came women's specific packs, and with it, the original packs became "mens" or unisex...like this one. Either a man or woman could use it, although there are other packs that may be more comfortable for a woman, because they are designed for a woman, rather than a man. Features such as hip size/shape, shoulder size/shape, breasts, and torso length all come into play when designing a pack for women.

MSR XGK EX Multi-Fuel Stove

February 25, 2012

It does. Turn the dial a bit and liquid fuel will collect in the cup below cover on the burner. Light and wait for it to settle down, then turn the stove on. This must be done to vaporize the liquid gas into a gaseous state so it'll burn properly. I believe the only stove currently on the market that uses liquid fuel that you don't have to prime/preheat in this manner is made by Soto and called the Muka.

I prefer the dragonfly if I'm going to try and cook food in the pot - it simmers really well and has a range of temperature options that are easy to get without fiddling with how much air you put in the fuel bottle. If I'm going to try and boil water at high altitude and or cold temperatures - and just boil water/melt snow, the XGK works better. In larger groups and depending ont the length of time we're out, we usually bring a Dragonfly and a XGK.

Marmot Limelight 3-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft

February 2, 2012

I would go back to the REI brand tent. If you call corporate REI, they can sometimes even make you a commercial discount on the tent. These tents are relatively inexpensive and tend to stand up well, as you have experienced. Most other tents are more likely to change more frequently, unless you get something classic like the MHW Trango of TNF Mountain tents...which are 500+ dollars per tent and are designed for mountaineering conditions. The half dome would be my recommendation. Its also one of the same tents REI stores rent, which equals out to lots of nights out and better durability.

Seirus Softshell Lite Glove - Men's

Yes, they're waterproof enough. Should be fine skiing in 40 degree temps as well. As for the liner in the hestra mitt, probably a little too bulky. Black Diamond Tracer Helmet

February 1, 2012

This helmet would do great for climbing. However, its not really designed to protect from impacts that occur when your head hits something on the side - like a tree, rock, or ice when you're skiing down. I would look for a skiing helmet. The smith maze is pretty comfortable, only slightly heavier and probably one of the lightest skiing helmets out there.

Sterling Fusion Nano Bicolor Dry Single Rope - 9.2mm

January 27, 2012

Sterling makes great ropes, and this one would work just fine for ice climbing. Really, any dry rope would do the job. Keep in mind that the thinner you go, the less durable the rope is. If you're going to be doing a lot of top roping, you might want to go for something a bit thicker. Additionally, the thinner rope can be a little more difficult to handle with gloves/mittens on - not a deal breaker, but something to keep in mind!

These are awesome gloves - but the durability sucks. I used them for a season as a daily glove living in AK - both around town and while backcountry skiing. Mammut Accessory Cord - 150m

December 10, 2011

It would never be my first choice. You could use it in conjunction with a climbing rope as a pull line, thus giving you the full 60/70 meters of climbing rope. However, for canyoneering and/or caving, you'd want a static (as long as you never plan on climbing on it) rope with a water treatment, 9-11 mm. If you're only using it for canyoneering/caving - a climbing rope is overkill as you don't need the elastic properties.

Deuter Freeride Pro 30 Backpack - 1850cu in

September 27, 2011

The Silo 30 is more of an all around backpack, with the emphasis being on winter sports. The waist belt is less substantial on the Silo and there is only one large main compartment in which everything goes - shovel, probe, skins, etc. On the Deuter, there is a separated pocket for your wet/dry stuff. I found the frame in the Deuter to be more substantial than the Silo. As a result, the Deuter carried slightly better with a lot of weight but skied much stiffer. The Silo felt better on the way down. If you wanted something to use in the summertime as well, I'd definitely go for the Silo. One note though, it can be a bit tricky to get the skis/snowboard on the Silo the first time. Also, I believe the Deuter will hold a snowboard better than the Silo.
