Teva Hawthorn Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 4, 2011

Sadly I had to send these back...too small. That being said, these are beautiful, well constructed shoes. They are very light. I have wide feet and hoped that I could make them work based on their shape in the lookdown pics and the fact that they are leather, might be able to break them in. Unfortunatly not the case, just not wide enough. I would recommend not ordering these any smaller than your "average" size.

Mountain Hardwear Quark II Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Quark II Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 10, 2010

First impressions: Holy smokes this thing is light! My XL weighed in at 9oz. They material is very supple. This is replacing a very worn Marmot Precip which I loved. Storm flap is just a stiff piece of material, no velcro tabs. Has good length (Im almost 6-3) in the arms and overall length. My first piece of technical MH gear, looking fwd to seeing how it works. I am a minimalist hiker and the rainshell is often used for warmth over a long sleeve midwt top for onthemove clothing. Will bump to 5star if it performs well. The color is my only complaint and pushes my "function over form" belief to the edge of the envelope, I look like a european hitman LOL.

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 December 9, 2010

I liked my 3/4 length so much that I got the full. No super crazy about "limon" but in the realm of dual purposing it would make a decent signalling panel. I have been comfortable down to upper singel digits (degF) without additional insulation. Usually deep it strapped to the topof my pack so it is easy to pull off and sit on if I need it. A solid piece of gear.

Rating for this product: 4 December 9, 2010

Very happy with these. They slip on fairly easy and seem fairly durable. They work great on level ice and also very mild incline (less than 10%). They seemed to be fairly self cleaning. I wore them for several miles of snow and ice on the AT in TN last week and they did not seem to accumulate anything. These are WAY better than the sorry yaktrax I have tried before. They did seem to add a little traction walking on snowy trail as well.

Merrell Moab GTX XCR Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2010

After procrastinating getting these I received them about 2wks prior to a 75mile AT hike the beginning of December. I live where it is FLAT, so no proper break-in. Worn over smartwool adrenaline lows and at times smartwool heavy hiker (old model) with a 30lb pack did not generate any blisters.

They are somewhat heavier than my other trail shoes but I attribute that to the vibram soles, which I love for hiking shoes. Also has gtx. This considered, I'll take the trade.

Hiked in rain/mist and up to 4in of snow in temps from 55 down to 12degF. Feet stayed very comfortable. The shoes always appeared "wet" but didnt seem any heavier. Occasionally used Kako Icetrekkers (sz LG over sz 12W moabs).

Hope to get many miles out of these, will update if anything changes.

I live in the deep south and this shirt is just the ticket. Not sure about the vents etc but I have found the material to breath real well and feels nice on the skin. Don't know if I can bring my self to hike in it but I think it would perform as advertised. Great looking and easily the toughest button shirt I own. The hand is sort of stiff. Like most Carhartt stuff Ive owned these run a little large. Im 6-2plus medium build 215lbs and wear L to XL. The L in this fits perfectly. If you are into CCW you can about fit a gat in your belt due to the fabric stiffness (just kidding). I expect this one to last for years.

Got a good deal on this when I replaced a previous suunto that wore out after over a decade of service. The global needle is nice. It was larger than I imagined but I didnt look at the specs. Arc'teryx Gamma LT Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 6, 2010

Bought a soft shell a few yrs ago to try, ended up taking it back bcause I just didn't like it. Received this as a gift. Fit is great (XL, Im 6-3, 215pounds). Zippers are the smoothest BY FAR that I have ever seen. I have worn it in light rain, seems to shed water well. I wonder how bad my back/shoulders would be wetted if wearing a pack. I will update with a comment.

The description says no venting but the front pockets are high and are fairly meshlike. The collar is spacious. The sleeves are snug but not tight. The waist has an elastic draw.

I will bump this to a 5star if it does what I think it is capable of. Thanks.

This is basically a bigger version of the Jam. There is a removable piece of stiff CCF foam against your back but in no way is it a frame or supportive. One technique is to roll up your sleeping pad, insert it vertically and release. Let it open and then stuff your gear inside that cylinder. There are variants of this technique depending on your sleeping pad.

Sierra Designs Hurricane Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 12, 2009

These are light and pack away small in your pack. I have always carried them as insurance on cold (sub 40s) hikes. Finally used them for a few rain/sleet/snow cold days on the Colorado trail worn over silkweights and I gotta say I am very impressed with the breathability. No moisture build up. Now it was cold and lower humidity but they worked as adv. Front zip pocket was handy for keeping the digital camera against my leg and warm enough to function. My only gripe is the elastic pull for the waist. It didn't fail but looks suspect. If it did it would not be a show stopper, merely an inconvenience.

Not a 20 degree bag! More like 10!

Western Mountaineering UltraLite Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

Western Mountaineering UltraLite Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 October 12, 2009

Love this bag. I am 6-2+ and about 210. Got the long and it has plenty of room. The only downside is that it is snug, this contributes to its great weight and I feel it makes the bag feel warmer because there is less bag to heat. The equivalent wider bag by WM is the Alpinlite Super. The extra length lets me gather up some extra bag around my hips and knees so that when I lay on my side there are no tight spots/cold spots. I have been to single digits on several occasions in CO or on the AT in just silkweights and a hat and have been very comfortable, tho I do sleep warm. The full length zipper helps to regulate temperature on warmer nights or to open it up all the way and use as a quilt. The draft collar works great. I expect many years out of this bag but when I buy another it will be WM. Again this bag is snug, so if your are claustrophobic or want alot of wiggle room go with the Alpinlite. I dont use a stuff sack for this either, it goes in a dry bag in the bottom of the pack to fill in nooks and crannies and the rest of my kit goes in on top. Great bag.

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Sock

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

These seem to be a cross between Smartwool regular hiking socks and the Adrenalins. The nice, snug fit of the adrenalins with the thicker padding at the toe and heel. Personally, they are too hot for where I live 11.5mos out of the year. I love the Adrenalin but could see going with the PHD for cooler hiking. I think you cant go wrong with these under that criteria.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 3, 2009

I have had my precip for a few years now and I love it. It is light enought to always bring it along. I count it as a piece of safety gear because I pack pretty light. When it is cold and windy this is my wind shell. Betweeen the main zip, the pit zips and the pocket zips and cuffs it is easy to tweak so that I am not sweating. I have not had any leaking problems in the rain. I typically refresh the DWR every season as a matter of maintenance so I havent had any probs with that. It is sized for layering and the sleeves are pretty well sized for me (typical long sleeves are too short for me). Usually can be found on sale somewhere.

Durable? Yes. I have owned 4 different CBs, with this one being the last. All are still servicable, 2 are in use by buddies. I have no issues cleaning them BUT I only put water in them. The second part of your question: I dont' see it here on BC but Katadyn makes an adaptor kit for interfacing the hiker pro pump filter to a bladder, has some quick disconnects that you splice in. I ordered the parts through Katadyn and it works with this bladder.

http://shop.katadyn.com/product/153549/8014399/_/Quick_Fill_Hydration_Adaptor_Kit

If you use a pump filter you can rig this so that you dont have to remove the bladder from your pack when you fill it.

Doesn't come with a stuff sack but they are sold here for 10 bucks. Rolled in the sack appears to be 14 x 6.5 inches. I have always folded mine longwise and then S-rolled it in a roughly square shape to store inside the pack.

I have the 908s

which are the previous model. So far the best hiking shoe I have worn. I wear 4E width so a company that carries wide shoes has my business. What amazed me off the bat was that just walking I could feel air venting through the top front of these shoes. The toe bumper is fairly rigid and does provide protection. I have done 20 mile days in wet feet in these and felt great and blister free.

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Thermo 6 Sleeping Pad

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Thermo 6 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 June 24, 2009

Awesome comfort for a pound. Packs down nice and small (water bottle). Your hips and ribs will thank you. Also makes a great kids air mat. If you travel UL with a frameless ruck you can put this in the pack deflated against your back with a few puffs in it. Load your gear and put in a few more puffs. Will add some rigidity to your pack.

My 5yr old daughter stayed warm in one of these down to almost freezing. She crashed and not a peep was heard until I woke her up. I am fairly certain we could squeeze another 10deg cooler out of it. Packs down good but it would be nice to see a kid sized bag under 2 lbs.

GoLite Jam 2 Pack - 3100cu in

June 24, 2009

Get someone to help you measure your torso length. Measure from the largest bump on your spine at the base of your neck down to the imaginary line at the top of your pelvis (grab your waist on your abdomen, slide your hands down until they hit the bony pelvis, the line connects the top of each side of your pelvis). Use the sizing chart. I am 6-2 and usually wear a M pack due to my 18inch torso. Interestingly, my wife, who is 5-4 and long waisted, has an 18inch torso as well even tho I am 10plus inches taller.

Too narrow for me but nice

Salomon Tech Amphibian 2 Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 19, 2009

I have wide feet unfortunately. I liked everything about these except how narrow they were (to me). I wore them daily for several months as a regular work shoe. They breathed great but never stretched out. If you have regular width feet you will probably love these.

Get it how you like it and tack it down with a few threads. Just depends on how much continued tightening bothers you.

Therm-a-Rest Trail Lite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Trail Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 3 June 19, 2009

More comfortable than CCF, not as comfortable as a true inflatable. If they deflate and it is below freezing you will be cold. I have 2, but only use them as loaners now. If I want thin, light and less comfort I take my Z-lite. For comfort I take my POE Ether Thermo which is still lighter than this.

Got this for my wife. She is long waisted and it is difficult to find shirts that are long enough. This one fits great. The feel of the material is good too.

Teko Merino Light Mini Crew Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 18, 2009

Of the 5-6 different low cut hiking socks I tried, I liked these almost as much as my favorite the smartwool adrenaline light. If the smartwools didnt exist, these would be my socks. Good fit and padding, no itch, good hot weather comfort.

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Deluxe Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Deluxe Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 June 18, 2009

Pretty comfortable, definate upgrade from plain CCF pad. Also, you never have to worry about leaks. Rolls up kind of large, but you can fold it if you need to or roll it up, put it in your pack vertically and let it unroll in you pack. Then pack your stuff inside. This technique works good with frameless rucks like Golite and others.

Nalgene Wide Mouth Tritan Bottle - 32oz

Tough and I have never had one leak. Easy to clean. I got a few when I started backpacking but they got cut when I started shaving weight (a 1 liter platypus weighs 1/10 of one of these). If you use these, consider getting a cookpot/cup that slides over the end of the bottle to save space in your pack.

Kelty TC Sun/Rain Hood

Kelty TC Sun/Rain Hood

Rating for this product: 5 June 15, 2009

If you are planning on using your carrier for anything other than going to the store these are great options. These have protected all 4 of my kids on hikes in the woods to touristing Niagara falls to a trip to the zoo. THe design appears not to have changed much: the pole section slide into the sleeves on the back of the carrier and are secured with snaps. Velcro on the front hooks into d-rings on the front of the carrier.

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2009

If you got your kid carrier to pack you kid in the mall then you don't need this. If you plan on going to the woods this item and the sunshade are great. No need for loading the kid up with bug juice or sunblock. Assuming your kid is old enough to swat skeeters, they cant reach their legs anyhow (my kids started in these carriers at about 5mos). I think the price is steep but I got mine on sale when I got them (we have 2 carriers, sunshades and bugnets).
