Patagonia Storm Light Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Storm Light Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 21, 2009

This is a great coat. I have been a minimalist for some time and I usually prefer gore-tex, but I found this jacket at a great price so I thought I would give it a try. It holds it own in any Asian monsoon or in the Colorado backcountry. My only complaints are echos of other reviews. The side pockets do get in the way of a pack waist strap and they are too small if you have gloves on. It would also be nice if they were lined or something for the extra price. The coat is also a bit bulkier than I am used to due to the hanging mesh, but it still packs down pretty nice. The internal pocket is really nothing more than an extra bit of hanging mesh. It doesn't close or anything. The fit is a little on the big side as well but it works great on top of down on those nasty days. It is made in China and so far has taken everything that China has thrown at it!

Asolo TPS 520 GV Boot - Men's

Asolo TPS 520 GV Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 21, 2009

Best boots I have ever owned. They have taken my where ever I want to go in comfort. They fit like a glove right out of the box and I had nearly zero break in, although I did get a 1/2 size down from my usual 9 after trying on a few pairs. I have never had any problems with soles coming off even after severe Colorado boulder field abuse. The soles are rugged and brake well. The leather is tough and I have had minimal damage bashing them in sharp granite. They are surprisingly warm and I have never had circulation problems even on long bus rides. They are a must have when you have a heavy pack and are headed into the wide wander.

Super Sharp

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

CRKT Tiny Tighe Breaker Knife

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2009

Got this knife on SAC and have not been dissapointed. I have had it for about a year and took it backpacking through South America and it has stayed razor sharp. The assisted opening is amazingly fast and fluid. The double lock is quite solid and can stand up to huge amounts of pressure. My only complaint is that blade can open in your pocket or bag on occasion, which with a razor sharp blade can be bothersome. The pocket clip should be reversed to prevent pocket opening and a closed lock would nice for rough backpack storage. Just bought my second one!

Drink The Water

MSR MiniWorks EX Water Filter

MSR MiniWorks EX Water Filter

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2009

Got this filter for a trip through South America. Worked amazingly well in all conditions. Does tend slow down when using in slity/muddy conditions, but the filter is super easy to clean. It is quite fragile but if you pay attention it is no problem. The ability to attach to a 64mm bottle is a lifesaver and makes contamination nearly impossible. It will pump 1L/min with a crystal clean filter, so keep it clean or enjoy the forearm workout. Would not recommend it filter water for more than a few people.

Nothing Beats It

22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding

22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

I started out telemarking on both G3 and Rottefella bindings. After trying the Hammerheads, I will never use another binding, EVER!! They are absolutely bomb proof! Plus being able to change the pivot point of the binding in less than a minute (even on a cold day on the slopes) is key to adapting to changing snow conditions. On powder days I like it free with lots of feel, so I use the 2nd position. When it hasn't snowed for a week and I want to rip the groomers, I use the 4th position. For touring, no one makes a stronger heel piece and the bindings can be used on the 1st position, or if you want it really free, get cable extensions (not the million piece moving parts, gonna break on the way down BD touring kit). What else can I say besides there is nothing that bends and sends it like the Hammerheads.

Osprey For Life

Osprey Packs Atmos 65 Pack - 3800-4200 cu in

Osprey Packs Atmos 65 Pack - 3800-4200 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

I am 5'10" and 150 lbs and I took this pack on a 4 month trip through Peru and Ecuador and I could not have been happier with its performance. I got the large size frame and it held up against heavy airport abuse as well as harsh 3rd world bus traveling. The frame can dig into your shoulders if the bag is over loaded, but it is perfect for carrying what you need. The multiple access points are great for rummaging and I never had any problems with the zippers or buckles. The pack material stood up great with the exception of some small holes worn through the water bottle holder material after months of Sigg and fuel bottle storage. I have owned Marmot, Mountain Smith, Lowe Alpine, and Kelty packs and none even come close. After using this pack I am now a life long Osprey user.
