Beal Stinger III 9.4mm Golden Dry Rope

Beal Stinger III 9.4mm Golden Dry Rope

Rating for this product: 5 August 15, 2011

love this rope, super thin, light, and durable (for its diameter). Have been using it at least once a week for some outdoor craging for the last 6 months, took a bunch of whippers on it, still good. I'd use a thicker one to dog though, 9.4 is quick thin and that'd be a waste. The sheath seems to be very durable

Stoic Somnus 30 Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2011

nice, warm, and comfy sleeping bag. tried it a couple of times when lows were 40ish. I was defintely warm if not too warm early evening. i'm 6'3" and the long is long enough for my height which is awesome. the center zip is cool but doesn't go all the way down so if your feet are too warm you can't really have them air out a bit although the zipper is bidirectional so you can air out a bit below waist level.

Petzl Grigri 2 Belay Device

Petzl Grigri 2 Belay Device

Rating for this product: 4 June 2, 2011

... an article on 8a.nu mentions a flaw of the device where the rope can slide outside the safety cam and become jammed on the side of the cam. It's not supposed to damage the rope or anything but still kinda weird.
Other than that little concern, it's pretty solid, feels secure to belay with. Not as easy to feed as the cinch though.
I like it way more than the first one because of its size, making it easier to belay with.

Stoic Luft Hoody Insulated Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 19, 2011

This sweater is pretty cool indeed. Great design, colors (black/blue), awesome hoody (big enough for me: 6'3" 180lbs and I got the medium), great fit, very warm and light!
The only problem I have with it is with regards to the sleeves: They're a bit narrow which make it a slightly difficult to remove the sweater without tearing apart the cuffs. But I understand that that design makes it warmer too, so I am ok with it. I don't think I would even mention it if I wouldn't use it for belaying: Put it on for belaying and take it off before climbing. So I had to do that a lot yesterday.

by far better than grigri and atc. feeds super easy and w/o any effort at all. super light and small form factor. once used to it, it's easy to unlock as well, but yeah it does take a bit of time to get familiar with the device. same goes for lowering. keep your break hand on though, just like the grigri, the rope can go through it in some very rare cases.

I like to pack these into my pack when I go to a rocky crag so that I don't bang my toes on rocks. This is perfect for that. Plus the sole is thick enough to be comfy to hike a bit.

These shorts are really nice: Very thin and light for summer climbing. Very stretchy and durable.

Arc'teryx Caco 3 Chalk Bucket

Rating for this product: 2 December 6, 2010

ok for the job, yeah. Not as big as it looks and some annoyance with the drawcord if it's not filled with lots of chalk: Sometimes the cord pushes the pouch out and doesn't close anymore. I had to readjust it several times already.
Other than that, it's nice, got lots of pockets and stuff. You can also hide things under the chalk pouch.

EDIT: The cord issue is very annoying. I can't even close it anymore. Sucks.

Rating for this product: 4 September 27, 2010

Very nice shorts right there. Climbed with them last weekend and they're very stretchy, don't get stuck so good for leg movements, light, and of course from Arc'teryx, stylish.
Got the M while my waist size is 32", right on. If you're 33" or more you probably want to size up.
Pockets are good, only little drawback is the side pocket (mesh) doesn't hold phones very well, it's more for keys I guess. Also, kinda expensive, but got 40% off on departmentofgoods.com

I used to carcamp with an half-a-inch air pad and recently got one of these because I needed a thicker pad for my back. Man what a difference.
It's very compact once you roll it into its sack and easy to inflate which really takes 2 minutes.
Agreed with other reviews as well that you don't want to inflate it to the max otherwise you'll be bouncing off of it every time you toss.

Arc'teryx Miura 50 Backpack - 2746-3356cu in

Rating for this product: 5 July 29, 2010

I have both Miura 30 and 50, and I have to say that the 50 is WAY better than the 30. Lots of room, opens up completely so easy to reach in, huge front pocket you can access from inside as well. Had a lot of compliments from people too.
With the 30 I can fit a rope, a pair of shoes, harness, chalk bag, and a bottle of water and that's it (and pretty tight). With this one, I still have room for much more and it's not tight :)

Arc'teryx Pali Rope Bag

Rating for this product: 4 June 22, 2010

got this bag from SAC, wouldn't have otherwise.
Very high quality bag, light, thin, and nice big tarp. The straps compress the whole thing into a tiny bag compared to the metolius rope master bag.
Overall, I like it better than the metolius, it just takes a bit longer to get used to packing the rope: The straps are a bit tricky at the beginning because they can slide off and open the bag.

thick sole: can't feel the holds
poor velcro design: looks like there's too much fabric or something
So not really recommended unless you're climbing easy stuff with big foot holds or use them as warm up shoes which is what I do now.

excellent sport harness

Arc'teryx S240 Sport Climbing Harness

Arc'teryx S240 Sport Climbing Harness

Rating for this product: 5 May 27, 2010

I now have a 320 and a 240. I use the 240 for climbing indoors and the 320 for outdoors because it has more gear loops. But realistically I could just use the 240 for outdoors too since I only do sport climbing. It's super light and comfy, and it looks great! It's also super compact and mod-able so doesn't much space at all compared to harnesses like Petzl and BD.
Sizingwise it's the same as the 320: I usually wear size 32 pants and I got a medium. I would advice to size up even if you're a size 33.

Arc'teryx C80 Chalk Bag

Arc'teryx C80 Chalk Bag

Rating for this product: 5 May 26, 2010

got this bag because I needed an extra one so I can have one for outdoors and one for indoors climbing.
I have skinny but long fingers and this bag is big enough for my hands. My other bag is a prAna jumbo and that one can hold more chalk but the c80 has a bigger opening thanks to the stiff brim.
The drawcord is nicer on the c80: Easier to close and open the bag.
I couldn't really care less about the extra phone/wallet pocket but I guess it's nice to have. I might need in the future, who knows.

Arc'teryx R320 Rock Climbing Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 26, 2010

I own a BD and a Petzl harness, and never really had anything against them but as soon as I tried the 320, it felt like another world of harness. It is super light, low volume (easy to pack), very comfy, and thin as hell. Far better than any other harnesses for sure. There is also only one security check on this one, like my Petzl one, no need to double back. It's pretty solid even though it's that thin and light: I took several whipper yesterday within one of them was probably 20 feet big.So, yeah I totally recommend this harness, I know it's pricey so try to get it at a discounted price and then it's more than worth the money :)
And before I forget, I wear 32-waist size pants and I got the medium. It's right there. I think if you're 33 you should go with the large...

Patagonia Borderless Trek Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 7, 2010

These pants are nice, light, have a nice fit, but might be a bit too lightweight in cool/cold weather.
I like that they stretch a bit because I mainly use them for climbing so they don't rub against my knees when doing a high step or something. Also the waist button could be more durable, I mean it didn't fall off or anything but for active wearing, I feel like it could've been better.
My waist size is 32 and got a medium size one: The fit is perfect.

Just like the BC version of it, this shirt rocks! This time I got 3 of these instead of just a couple. I climb outdoors once a week and at least one more time in the gym so I wear them out quite quickly.
They're very light, keep the stinkiness inside, and have a very nice fit. I am 6'3" and weight about 172lbs, and the medium is perfect - yes I like athletic fit. They're very thin so they might not last as long as some thicker ones but that's the price to pay to almost feel shirtless on a route.

Love these boots. When I first got them I was worried they were going to kill my feet because I could barely stick my feet in! Plus I mixed up the sizing between UK and US so I thought I got a size too small. Haha.
Anyways, on my first day they felt great. Snug but not too tight, and stiff which is good since I'm tall and stuff. My feet didn't hurt at all until I walked back to the car which at this point the tips of my toes were hurting like hell. But they're ski boots, not shoes ;)

Stoic Bombshell Bib - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 1, 2010

I like this bib. it almost feels like gore tex and very well done (welded seams, etc). Unlike other reviews I don't mind the fit. It's not as fitted as the touring pants but it's made for more layering I guess. I'm 6'3" and weight 175lbs and size M is good for me, except probably for the length, it could be a bit longer. But since I use it only for skiing/snowboarding, it doesn't matter too much: The boots are big enough so it doesn't look weird.
The straps could be longer too... but I guess that is a small price to pay to get M for my body build. I wouldn't go large for sure: It would be too baggy/big waist.

Comparing this to the Arc'teryx Rho AR Top, I like this one better: The style is a bit better and the sleeves are a bit longer as well. I am 6'3" - 174lbs and the medium fits perfectly.
The picture of the black one doesn't give it justice, indeed it looks much nicer once you wear it.
Also it is warm and very stretchy which makes it a perfect midlayer. But wearing as a regular sweater is good too.

KEEN Wear Around Mary Jane Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 21, 2010

Got a pair (actually 2) of these on SAC for my wife. She usually wears size 7 but when we got the first pair it was a bit loose. So we decided to gift that one to a friend and get another one size 6.5.
She loves it, it's very nice and cute as she says and good for any casual wear.

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2010

Just got this for my wife on SAC. When we received it, I wanted to steal it from her! She's lucky I got it in size small and I would need a large, hehe.
The H2O frame is pretty nice and keeps her back breathing. The side zipper to access the main compartment is very convenient to grab something without digging into the whole pack.

Arc'teryx Gamma AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 7, 2010

Picked this one up on SAC in large (I'm 6'3" and 170lbs). The cut is nice, similar to the backcountry shift softshell jacket, although I like the BC one better.
It's warm, stretchy, wind-blocking, and has long sleeves for tall people. The shell feels stiffer than the BC shift shell, I hope that will change over time because it's a bit too stiff IMO.
Finally I totally agree with NL: I would not buy this full price, hell no...

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 4, 2010

got this from SAC because I needed a good heater when belaying during winter climbing season and this is definitely filling that job!
at first I got it in medium (6'3" and 170lbs) but it was way too small so I exchanged it with a large and that one is good.
tiny thing about it: sleeves are shorter than what I expected. not by much though so no big deal.

La Sportiva Cobra Climbing Shoe - Discontinued Rubber

December 17, 2009

Agreed with Stephen, they're not down turned at all in my experience with sportiva shoes. It's a very soft shoe which you will break in very quickly: It took me 3 routes to feel comfortable with them and I sized them the same as Miura VS and Venom which took me much longer to break in.

Thule Atlantis 1200 XT Cargo Box

Thule Atlantis 1200 XT Cargo Box

Rating for this product: 5 December 17, 2009

This box is awesome for any extended trip if you want 4-5 people to feel comfortable in your car. I got it for my prius and it is not too long for that type of car. You may want to convert the antenna into a sharkfin one to avoid the box bending it.
For ski trips: It can easily fit 2-3 pairs of skis along with a couple of snowboards and boots. It is long enough to fit any type of skis as well. You can then use the trunk for all your other stuff.
For surf trips: It can fit 2-3 shortboards. Don't count on having longboard though! Haha. And you can keep all the wet stuff in the box too.
The installation takes 2 minutes really and doesn't require more than one person to do it.

Stoic Luft Down Insulated Sweater - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 December 17, 2009

I picked that up from SAC about a week ago for my wife in cream color and we didn't really like it. The cut is very nice along with the design for sure. But in cream color, it does look dirty although I didn't really mind it, she hated it. Also more importantly ('cause we can't change that) the pocket holes are TINY! She is tiny and she could barely stick her hands in. Too bad we had to return it otherwise with bigger pocket holes we would have just exchange it with the berry color.

Arc'teryx Miura 30 Backpack - 1831-2136cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 16, 2009

Just got this recently and got outdoors just today with it for the first time: It's pretty sick! I got the large one and I could fit my 60m rope (put in a metolius rope bag), shoes, kneebar pads, harness, cinch, and belay gloves in the main compartment. On the way back I managed to stuff my hoody as well. So that's enough room for a day at the crag.
I didn't get the strap issue the other review mentioned. But yeah the bottom of the bag is a bit narrower, I guess for the style, which I don't mind really.

La Sportiva Cobra Climbing Shoe - Discontinued Rubber

Rating for this product: 5 December 5, 2009

These are sooooo comfy! Perfect for a long gym session or to climb vertical stuff outside. I like steep stuff so I keep my Miura VS for outside and use these at the gym. I got the same size as the VS btw.
The rand is softer than the Venom's which makes it comfier and probably stretchier although I only had my Cobras recently.

I just got those on SAC a week ago and tried them on as soon as they got in: Perfect fit and my wife said they're a very good fit. I usually wear 32 size pants and I got a M. They fit perfectly and going with a L would have been way too big for sure, especially that they are stretchable.
They seem quite warm for just a softshell due to the micro fleece which is nice for skiing. I just can't wait for the season to start now!!!

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 14, 2009

These shirts are the bomb: Lightweight, contain the odor, stretchy, athletic fit, and nice goat logo again, hehe.
I got a pair of these about a month ago and use them any time I go climbing indoor or outdoor. They are so light I feel like I am climbing shirtless.
Sizingwise, I am 6'3" and weight 170lbs so athletic built. So I got the medium size and it's perfect. I am so happy I didn't get the large like some people mentioned in the reviews, it would have been way too loose/big for me. I agree it is a bit tight at the armpits, but I don't feel it anymore so I don't know if it is because they stretch a bit or because I just got used to it. But it doesn't bother me at all.

Good and solid draws. I took a 20 foot fall with one of them and it still looks like new expect for the little scratches from the friction with the bolt.
Wiregates are the way to go for sure, light, easy to clip, and dont get knocked opened. Too bad the bolt biner is not wiregate too.
These draws are good enough for any sport routes, no need for these fancy petzl stuff...

Metolius Inferno Wire-Gate Quickdraw - 5 pack

Rating for this product: 4 August 12, 2009

These draws are a pretty cool deal for the price: Light, solid and long enough. Took some fall on them and they held :)
The major drawback is that there is no rubber to prevent the biner to flip. This is very annoying especially when about to clip from a slopper or crimper.

Good Venom!

La Sportiva Venom Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Venom Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 July 8, 2009

Venoms are pretty good shoes, very curved and edgy. Putting them on at first can be a pain especially if you sized way down. But it gets better.
I normally wear 10.5 shoes (street size) and I sized down to 42 for these ones, same as my Miura VS. Feels the same too.
The heel hook of the Miura VS is better than this one. But it's still good, just gotta be a bit more careful about slipping off.
Another issue is that after a while they still kinda hurt on the first route of the day whereas VS don't.

Solid and perfect fit

Thule Load Bar Pair

Thule Load Bar Pair

Rating for this product: 5 May 22, 2009

The 50 inch bars fit my Prius perfectly and they are very solid. The maximum load is like 165lbs which is way more than I will ever need to put on the roof of my car.
They do generate noises though once you drive faster than 30mph. So you can either go with fairing (not cheap) or wrap a bungee cord around them a couple of times.

Thule Fit Kits - set of 4

Thule Fit Kits - set of 4

Rating for this product: 5 May 22, 2009

The 2142 fit kit is perfect for the Prius and is coated with some weird plastic paint so that it does not scratch your car.
The installation takes a bit of time to get everything figured out but once you are there, it is great and fits perfectly.
As mentioned by other reviews, the noise starts at about 25-30mph especially when it is windy out there. And it peaks at about 60mph and does not really get louder. I read online you can use bungee cord wrapped around the bars a couple of time to get rid of the noise instead of investing into a fairing which is not cheap. I will give it a shot soon.

These pants are the BOMB. I got 3 different colors and they all look good (black, steel, and earth). They are made of spandex so they stretch a bit when you need them to on those high step or split moves.

Ride Yukon Snowboard - Wide

Rating for this product: 4 May 5, 2009

I am 6 foot 3 tall, weight 175lbs (10.5 boot size) and got the 159 version. I should have probably gotten the 164 or 168 for better runs during icy conditions but it's still decent.
This board is so wide I float over powder. I did a lot of powder days in Kirkwood this season, often with more than 1-2 feet of snow and once I got enough momentum, I was flying :)
On groomers, this baby is almost pretty amazing, nothing to complain about there.
I actually do not think this board is that stiff, I tried other ones before and I was actually surprised that this one has more flex.

La Sportiva Miura VS Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2009

These climbing shoes are the best! They edge like nothing else, very aggressive and won't let you down on tiny chips.
I wear 44.5 regularly (street shoes) and I got 42. They used to kill my feet at the beginning, I could barely climb the first couple times I went on the wall w/ them. But now they stretched a bit and they're fine. I still can't walk around with them for too long though. Each session takes a bit of easing in. I would go for the 42.5 for my next pair.
