Good indoor cycling shoes

Louis Garneau Lite Trainer Shoe - Men's

Louis Garneau Lite Trainer Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 6, 2012

First of all, I think that the U.S. sizing for these shoes is not accurate. I usually wear a size 45 (or U.S. 11) cycling shoe but I was concerned when I checked the sizing chart and saw that 45 is equal to U.S. 11.5. It turned out that a 45/11.5 shoe is not too big for me. It fits like a size 11.

I installed Shimano SPD cleats on the shoes. The cleats are just barely exposed and make a tiny click on tile floors. The footplate is hard plastic, like typical cycling shoes.

The shoes are fine for indoor trainers or spinning classes. I'm not using them outside for two reasons. First, the soles have small vents (covered by grilles) in front of and behind the cleats. I imagine that the inserts would become a bit wet in a rainstorm. Second, the fabric and laces of the shoes are blinding bright white. I would hate for them to turn into an ugly grey.

All in all, like the description states, good shoes for someone who does a lot of indoor cycling but doesn't want to wear "regular" cycling shoes.

Keen quality with style

KEEN Bidwell Sandal - Men's

KEEN Bidwell Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 6, 2011

I have the Keen H2 and cycling sandals and I like them so I bought the Bidwells when I saw them on sale. I felt like a toolbag when I was wearing the H2 sandals with nice clothing so the Bidwells are a big improvement to my style.

Bidwell is true to size for Keen sandals and shoes in general. The leather uppers are solid and the footbed is comfortable. Toes are hidden from view, which is a plus in many social situations, but the sandals don't feel stuffy. Bidwell is a great choice if you want Keen quality with some class.

Good quality but expensive

Julbo Looping 3 Sunglasses - Spectron 4 Baby - Toddler

Julbo Looping 3 Sunglasses - Spectron 4 Baby - Toddler

Rating for this product: 4 June 29, 2011

I got these shades for a 28 month-old. He didn't appreciate sunglasses at first but slowly warmed up to them. The dual-sided nose bridge is great for kids who don't know up from down. The lenses are dark enough for bright days and didn't seem to impair his view of the world. Even though he dropped them regularly, they didn't scratch due to their sturdy design.

The frame was a bit big for his head and would droop on his face. He refused to use the headband because he wanted to take off the sunglasses whenever he felt like it. As a result, he took off the glasses (or they fell off) while he was sitting in the bicycle seat and we lost them. It was an expensive lesson for me. I bought a cheaper replacement pair and will think for a while about buying this brand again.

Not necessarily waterproof

Oakley Station Bike Jacket - Men's

Oakley Station Bike Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 August 13, 2010

Despite the description, the tag on the Station Jacket states that it is "water resistant." I haven't tested it in a deluge yet but the shell has taped seams on the inside and resembles the material of other waterproof light jackets such as the Sierra Designs model. I expect that it will be waterproof for a while and will gradually lose efficacy.

I'm 6'1" and 165 pounds. I ordered the medium and it fits fairly well. I have long arms and the arms of the jacket are long enough for me in the riding position. The body is quite short, though, and doesn't cover my butt at all in the riding position. The body is slim but not tight - I could probably fit a thin fleece under it. The hood mostly covers a helmet and has a good bill.

Overall, it's not an optimal cycling jacket. However, the pit zips make it attractive among lightweight shells.
