Almost perfect

Outdoor Research Mentor Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Mentor Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 9, 2012

Sweet jacket that can be found online these days at a great price for as low as $219 - $230. Rugged as heck. Features are just about perfect... not too many features and not too few. Side zips are great!

The hood is ridiculously huge. Even with a climbing helmet on, it is a floppy bag on my head.

Also, I would lengthen the cut a little bit more in the back, but this is a small detail.

Kokatat makes great stuff. I just wish they offered more color variety.

Excellent Design & Quality, but Pricey

Sea To Summit Big River Dry Bag

Sea To Summit Big River Dry Bag

Rating for this product: 4 May 27, 2011

The heading pretty much says it all. Very good quality well-suited for rugged use and longevity. The oval shape is very useful for fitting a 13L bag into round kayak hatches which was the case in my situation. I like that the material is nylon and not rubber as with other heavy duty bags. This allows for easy sliding in and out of tight spaces such as in a kayak. The rubber bags are a real pain to wedge in and out of a kayak.

I purchased this bag at a 25% discount and still thought it was very expensive for what it is.

Perfect 3-Season Mountaineering Boot for Wider Feet

Kayland MXT Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2009

Are the La Sportiva or Scarpa boots too narrow for your feet? Try the Kayland MXT. They accommodate a little wider foot beautifully. These are the perfect 3-season boot capable of full mountaineering with crampon (strap-on, not clip on) capabilities, yet comfortable enough for trail hiking. The grippy vibram sole makes this boot perfect for scrambling and low-5th class climbing. I can edge on the tiniest flake in this boot. I take these everywhere in the Oltympics and the Cascades. They are light, but durable. 'Event' membrane keeps your feet dry on wet and muddy trails.

This is my second pair. If this model is still around in years to come, I am sure I will buy a third pair.

MontBell Ultralight Wind Jacket - Men's

October 20, 2009

There is no inside and out... it is a single layer of ultrathin ripstop nylon. The jacket is thin! It flaps in the wind like tissue paper. It does however, work very well as a windbreaker.

Pricey, but very useful

MontBell Ultralight Wind Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ultralight Wind Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 20, 2009

When they say this jacket is ultralight, they are not kidding. I can ball it up into my fist and make it disappear. It comes with a tiny stuff sack which is very handy. When I am wearing the jacket, I store the stuff sack inside the little arm pocket of the jacket.

The jacket feels like it is made of tissue. But after wearing it for a bit, you soon realize that it is durable stuff. The jacket is well made. Be warned: this sizes run small. I was supposed to fit into the Medium, but went with the Large... and it was even a tight fit (but good).

I used it on a bike trip and it was excellent as a windbreak. I now take it on every trip into the mountains if I ever need that wind layer. Turns out that everyone I go with also has this jacket.

It repels light rain too.

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Vancouver Bag

March 27, 2009

Yes, it will work. I currently use it for my 15" laptop and there is room to spare. Looking at it, I do believe a 17" would also work. Be aware though, they have not provided padding and such to protect the laptop. If you drop your bag on the floor, the laptop will not survive it. You just need to be careful.

DRY DRY DRY

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Vancouver Bag

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Vancouver Bag

Rating for this product: 4 March 27, 2009

Very nice bag - perfect for rainy winters in Seattle. I can carry my laptop, with files and binders without any concern of any of it getting wet. Quality built and comfortable. There is an additional waist strap for those bike commuters to keep it over your shoulder while you ride.

While it works for a laptop bag, they didn't provide any support or cushioning for it like other laptop bags. This would have been a nice addition.

Garmin 60 CSX GPS Unit

January 29, 2009

Yes, the 60 CSX includes nautical calculations so you can factor speed and such. This unit will also accept Garmin's Bluecharts for water, but be warned, that these are wayy expensive and unnecessary. Topo maps give you all the coastal regions and that is all that you need. Bluecharts is more for commercial use and thus the outrageous price.I am a climber and a kayaker and this is the unit I use. Buttons makes it nice to operate through a clear vinyl drybag.

As a climber and a kayaker, this is the unit I use. It handles all everything I need on land and on water. Easy to read topo maps for land with a decent altimeter and digital compass. And waterproof for the ocean. It handles nautical speeds and calculations. Buttons makes it nice to operate through a clear vinyl drybag.

Highly recommend.

The VERY BEST in a PFD

Kokatat OutFit Tour Personal Flotation Device

Kokatat OutFit Tour Personal Flotation Device

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

It is no wonder everyone is wearing this PFD. Great fit, great quality and just the right amount of features. If mine was ever lost or damaged, I would buy the same model again.

Features include an inside pocket for a rescue knife, a pocket for a VHF radio and an additional pocket for accessories. (I keep a power bar, goggles and nose plug in that one).

Great fit/grip, but better learn to sew

NRS Hydroskin Glove

NRS Hydroskin Glove

Rating for this product: 3 November 18, 2008

These fit very well and keep my hands warm in all conditions except for winter. The grip is perfect.

I have had the stitching blow out countless times and I feel that I have essentially resewn my gloves completely. It seems a seam blows out every time I used them. Good thing I can hand sew them back together.

Gerber E-Z Out Rescue Full-Serration Blunt-Tip Knife

Gerber E-Z Out Rescue Full-Serration Blunt-Tip Knife

Rating for this product: 3 November 18, 2008

Great knife quality - very sharp. I use it as my rescue knife for sea kayaking. I like that it does not sit on the front of my PFD and get in the way.

After a few months of use, I have signs of rust. (and I rinse my gear with a hose after each use.) The blade is still usable though.... for now.

I drilled a small hole into the handle in order to attach a lanyard. It worked very well without compromising the handle. Why didn't they include one?

Very good Quality - Poor binding design

Redfeather Snowshoes Trek Series Snowshoe Kit w/ Poles & Tote

Redfeather Snowshoes Trek Series Snowshoe Kit w/ Poles & Tote

Rating for this product: 2 November 18, 2008

Binding does not properly hold the heel in place when traversing a slope. Heel will slowly migrate off the snowshoe until you end up pigeon-toed. Everything else about their snowshoes are top notch. I would recommend for recreational use only. Look elsewhere if you are a climbing mountains with them.

Black Diamond Spire Elliptic Trekking Pole

Black Diamond Spire Elliptic Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

FlickLock is a far superior design compared to the compression twist design. These can be easily adjusted with or without gloves. They won't collapse unexpectedly. The rest of the poles offer very good quality. A little expensive for what they are.

Rating for this product: 3 November 17, 2008

Very good glacier glasses suitable for glacier climbing over 10,000'. The frame is durable and a nice quality. Lens is also very nice, but it is easily scratched. I ruined my first pair this way. I bought another pair because of the price and fit.

NRS Pilot Knife

October 18, 2008

Should handle just fine as it is made of stainless steel. The key thing is to rinse the knife with fresh water after each time in salt water or rust stains will develop. Any river knife is suitable for the sea so long as you take care of it in the way I just mentioned.

Suunto Pioneer Multipurpose Compass

Suunto Pioneer Multipurpose Compass

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2007

The Suunto Pioneer and the Orca are exactly the same product except for the way they are mounted. The Pioneer offers a fixed mount option where you can screw a base onto your kayak deck. This requires you put two holes into your deck. The Orca has a bungee Chord with clips and is removable.
It is worth noting that it is easy to add a bungee and clips to convert the Pioneer to the Orca.
Both are top notch products, though expensive. I purchased mine here for $29.95 which I believe to be a good price for this item.
