Already My New Favorite Shirt

Backcountry.com Verticle Logo T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Verticle Logo T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 9, 2012

Couple things. I bought the Steep and Cheap "Check your SAC" shirt a while ago, and it's been my go-to shirt ever since. It's great for sweating in, but the little bit of cotton blended in keeps it from feeling too slippery. I've been waiting for a sequel with the same blend to come along and HERE IT IS. Soft, light, comfortable, and the current design is reeeally cool. And it's cheaper than most active shirts.

Other things that you may not be able to tell from the photo are that the neck is relatively small—you're not going to be showing off your chest hair. I like it, it's not tight at all but it does keep it from sliding around.

Also, it's quite long. Like mid-buttcheek. Again, that's a plus for me because I'm mainly a climber and a lot of shirts get pulled up pretty high when both hands are over your head, which this doesn't.

So there you go. It's fantastic. Buy it.

Inconveniently Attractive

Stoic Breathe 90 T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Mens

Stoic Breathe 90 T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Mens

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2011

So, OpinionatedGeek says he's 5'9" and 165 with a 42" chest and the shirt is too big in the chest. That seems weird to me, because I'm 5'9" and 150 lbs with a mere 38" chest (practically a wisp of a man) and the medium fits me perfectly. It's on the skin in the chest, but not tight, the sleeves go down about 3/4 of the way to my elbow like OG said, and the hem is low enough that it doesn't ride up when biking (bent over) or climbing (arms up).

Fit aside, this is my new favorite shirt. It wicks like you would not believe, even if you were predisposed to credulity in the realm of fabric properties. I ride three miles to school and back every day, and had resigned myself to the idea that my lower back would be sweaty afterwards. No shirt will keep save me from moistness, I grieved, but then! STAND BACK, said the Breathe 90, I GOT THIS. The design on the front, though nearly irrelevant, is really awesome-looking if you like things that look awesome, and it would be equally at home on the crag or at the (obviously) trendy microbrewery you frequent. Also it's light enough that you'd forget you were wearing it if it weren't for people seeing how cool you look and trying to make out with you all the time. They're like COME HERE YOUR SHIRT IS IRRESISTIBLE and you're like PLEASE TAKE YOUR FACE OFF OF MY FACE, I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT.

And let's be honest, that's not really a downside. The only thing I can think of is that 50 bucks is a bit steep for a shirt, but that's what Steep and Cheap is for. Or a steady paycheck.

Gramicci Rail Pant - Men's

Gramicci Rail Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2011

Do you know what time it is? It's summertime. And that means it's getting warmer, and that means SOCIETY wants you to wear shorts. "But Angus," you weep, "what if I have skinny white legs, the sight of which causes children to run away screaming?" FRET YOU NOT, I SAY, for Gramicci has a solution. These pants are light, airy cotton, like something that an old-timey plantation owner would wear only without all the racism. They do sit a little long down low for what I'm used to (I'd guess a 32" inseam on the 32), but not on to the asphalt, and it's nothing a belt or some extra junk in the trunk can't fix. They're soft and flexible like a kitty cat (except one you can wear and aren't allergic to) and I rode many miles in the warm weather today with nary a trace of sweating or chafing. So when summer comes around, as it is wont to, wear these. Because let's face it, you're not gonna turn ladies' heads with your hairy calves. You're going to turn them with your organic Italian slacks. Did I mention they're all-organic? Cause yeah.

It'll breathe well, but it's probably too warm for weather warmer than around 60. Especially if you're exercising. For chillier weather, overcast, wind, or maybe at night around camp, it should be perfect. The pockets are big enough for a dSLR body and lens individually perhaps, but probably not together. It's possible that if it was on the smaller side and you only had a 50mm lens or something, you could get it in there, but they're not huge by any means.

First (albeit tentative) Review

Stoic Vaporshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 3, 2011

Ok, first out-of-box impressions. It's very light, very thin fabric, kind of slippery and seems pretty durable. The fit is clearly intended to allow for layering underneath, it's a little baggy compared to the other Stoic Ms I have. It beads water like a brand-new raincoat should (see photo). Other stuff:

The sleeves are really long. I'm 5'9" and medium Stoic gear has always fit me well, even though my wingspan is about 6'2". These sleeves might even be too long, but mobility is good.

Seams are not welded. I can say that the water beads off them just as well. Presumably they won't last as long though.

The hood is huge, which would be awesome in the rain, where I have not yet taken it. I did stand in the shower with it (on cold) and didn't get any notable condensation, and I rode my bike six or seven miles in 50-degree weather and didn't get swampy. These are not strenuous tests, I'll grant you, but it handled them just fine.

The length is shorter than my current jacket (the backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 shell), but still past my pants pockets.

I don't especially like the lack of pockets, I'll be honest. I don't know why they're left out (maybe a feature of the material like Ben Wheeler was talking about), but it's annoying.

Packs down to about the size of a Nalgene when carefully folded and rolled. Very portable.

Also don't judge the color by my photo, the lighting's weird. That's the navy, but the photo on this page is true to color. Go by that.

Bottom line (with the caveat that I haven't field tested it): Seems like a good jacket. It's relatively cheap and from what I can tell, does the job well. Not mind-blowing, though, hence the 4-star "pretty good."

[copied and pasted from the one-pair page so you don't have to click so much]

How much can you possibly expect from a sock? Keeps your feet warm? Check. Stays up when you move your foot around in a boot (I'm a tele skier)? Check. Padded shin so you don't cry like a little girl at the end of the day? Check. Stays warm and not soggy when you sweat in it? Check. Hold up after repeat use? Check. Stoic Overhang Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 2, 2011

I wish I could rate these 4.75 because my only problem with them is such a niggling issue that it almost doesn't count, but they do fit a little short. I'm 5'9" and 150 pounds with a 32" waist, and the medium rides a little low but where I like it, and the legs still barely cover my kneecaps. Fine for walking, a little revealing when high-stepping on a boulder problem. Other than that, they're stupendous. They dry before you even realize they're wet, they wash easily, and in all the hiking and climbing I've done I've yet to scratch them up. Plus they're kinda stretchy for mobility and the thigh pocket is supremely useful.

Stoic Welded Sport Duffel

Rating for this product: 5 May 2, 2011

Some of you are looking at this review and thinking "I like it, but I'm just not sure." Stop thinking and do it. This duffel bag is my new favorite thing to abuse, and I think I abuse it more than is actually necessary just because it can take it. The fabric is stiff, yes, but it's more waterproof than your house and feels like you could stab it with a knife and it would gain sentience just long enough to laugh at you (I have not actually stabbed it with a knife). It's a great size for the average weekend trip, throwing all your ski clothes in the car, or even transporting small animals as demonstrated by one user. This thing is literally bulletproof (not literally). Buy it.

The North Face Venture Jacket - Women's

May 2, 2011

TNF stuff tends to be pretty form-fitting, but you've put yourself in an awkward situation. If you want to wear it on its own and you like form-fitting stuff, then by all means size according to the chart. But if you get it slim-fit and then wear a down jacket underneath, it'll compress the down and your insulative power goes out the window.

On the other hand, if you get it big enough to go over a down jacket and then wear it without, it won't be form-fitting any more.

The choice is yours, but you can't have it both ways.

DMM Phantom Wire Gate Carabiner - 5 Pack

I feel obligated to point out to you that the BD Neutrino (item BLD0806), though slightly heavier, is specifically designed to color-code Black Diamond cams AND they're $5.83 per 'biner as opposed to $9.58 for the Phantom and Spectre, so you could get EIGHT Neutrinos for the price of five of either of those.

That said, if you're determined to go with DMM I'd get the Spectre. If you want more than one piece on each clip, you'll need more room than the Phantom provides.
