Hardy Combo Tool

April 23, 2012

Four uses on this tool:

1-nippers for cutting mono (tippet/learder)
2-nail knot tool. Used for tying knots like unto the Tie-Fast tool.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=611JWRtkjOc)
3-Hook sharpener (file for sharpening hooks)
4-Hook eye cleaner at the base of the tool. Works as a needle to clean out the eye of your hook in case there is left over head cement of a few fibers that need clearing so you can thread the eye of the hook.

You will most likely use the nippers and the hook eye cleaner the most and the other things are added bonuses.

Mountain Hardwear Nitrous Down Jacket - Women's

Unfortunately for your color preferences this jacket isn't designed to be wore inside out. You could always stretch the boundaries of possibles though...I don't think it will self destruct if worn inside out, but you pocket situation might be kinda funky and you have some tags hanging out all over the place.

Ben's wipes are awesome for keeping the bugs away. The wipes are handy to keep in a pocket, as they are individually packaged. They keep the bugs away while being ever ready in my pack without blowing up on other contents in my pack. I'm a fan.

Patagonia Rock Grip Wading Boot-Sticky/Studded - Men's

April 1, 2012

Usual rule of thumb is to size up one full size. No company in fly fishing offers half sized boots. So a 13 would be right. Keep in mind that Patagonia's toe boxes usually run a little more narrow than other fly fishing boots. You may have some extra room when sizing up a full size from your ordinary shoe size, but remember that you will have thicker socks on under your stocking foot to battle the cold water of most rivers. Hope this is helpful.

C&F Design CF-2500 Waterproof Fly Box

C&F Design CF-2500 Waterproof Fly Box

Rating for this product: 5 April 1, 2012

C&F waterproof fly boxes are the best fly boxes on the market. They are pricey, but if you are on the water a lot or are very meticulous about your fly organization then look to the C&F waterproof boxes to get it done right. They are waterproof. The foam slits are better than any other. With easy angles slits and highly concentrated foam your flies will stay where you put them. There are many different styles/sizes for different size flies and different types of flies. Visit your local fly shop and they will help you find out which model is best for you. Always good to bring in your flies and actually try out different size boxes, not to mention the benefit of making sure they fit in your pack/vest before you buy. C&F is the way to go, no question.

Rating for this product: 4 April 1, 2012

For your faster action rods when you wanna have one floating line for dries, nymphs and the occasional streamer this is a great choice. I'm a fan. I like the SA GPX Sharkskin even better though! As always consult your local fly shop and they will let you know if this is a fly line with the taper that best fits your rod and fishing preference. Support your local shop!

Patagonia Guidewater Duffel - Max - 5614cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 27, 2012

You want this bag if you are a fisherman whose on the water a lot. Dry compartment keeps things dry and the wet compartment helps things dry out. It's not a duffel full of other pockets, just two main compartments - one dry/one wet and a small outer zippered pocket on the wet side. The rod tube holder on the exterior is sweet! Wish there where a couple of them on there. Just get one and you'll see what I mean when I say that it's much needed. Don't bother with the Large, get the Max. You may not use all the space all the time, but when you need the extra space, you'll have it.

Lamson Guru XV Anniversary Edition Fly Reel

Rating for this product: 4 March 27, 2012

The Guru is a killer reel. The weight is good. Durability is good. And the price it right. The drag system in this reel is the same as other "high" end Lamson reels and does a killer job of providing more than enough drag. I'm a fan.

Good Approach Wheels

Five Ten Guide Tennie Approach Shoe - Men's

Five Ten Guide Tennie Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2011

The Guide Tennie has some of the best grip and fit of any approach shoe out there. Having owned a pair for 2 years now, I still love them. For anyone looking for a shoe with a comfy fit and stellar grip, this is a good option. I would caution that for people looking to put more than 5-7 miles on an approach shoe, this may not be the one. On a hike that hit 12+ miles I definitely felt the lack of a more staunch sole ealy on in the hike.

Double The Goods

Patagonia Solar Wind Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2011

Combining a Nano Puff with a Gore Windstopper shell...smart move on the end of the folks out in Ventura, CA. Used this jacket just about everyday on the river during a 2 weeks Steelhead fly fishing trip. I was a bit skeptical at fist of Patagonia teaming up with Gore-Tex, but seriously, it couldn't have been a better move. The shell is great and the Nano insulation is the best. The fit is unique, so before you buy, I would try one on. It has a shorter cut to it than what you might think. I am 5'9" and 185 lbs. with big shoulders and I got a size - M. At fist I thought it was too tight in the shoulders, but as I started to wear it more, I realized it fits great. A Large would have been way to big, especially for someone who is 5'9". The cuffs are stellar. The waist cord draw-string system is on of the best I have ever seen. All in all, a great do-it-all piece to add to your mix.

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2011

For what it is(a lightweight synthetic insulation layer), there isn't a whole lot out there that is better than the Nano. I was a skeptic, and now I'm a believer. I wear my pull-over in just about every situation I can imagine. After a 2 week Steelheading trip, sleeping in a tent in 20 degree weather, I can say that this is one of the best layering pieces I have ever used.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 9, 2009

I've put about 20 months on this jacket thus far. It has excelled in the wettest of conditions and withstood abrasion like a champ. The DWR treatment is still alive and kickin' keeping me dry. This is a great heavy duty rain jacket or an excellent light weight shell for snow filled pursuits. The Gore-Tex Pro Shell is super tough. I recommend this for a good all round bomber shell. For those looking for a lighter version of this jacket for rain protection try the Beta SL Jacket. Same jacket made with lighter Gore-Tex that is ultra packable and still provide wetness protection.

Sweet Versatility

Black Diamond Camo Spot Headlamp

Black Diamond Camo Spot Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 June 11, 2009

Great headlamp. After using the Gizmo for about a year, it got soaked and it sketched out on me a couple of time when I really needed it getting back to camp...so I did some research and went with the Spot. I've never been happier with a headlamp. The multiple beam functions are great. I've loved the long range 1-watt bulb when needing range, but being able to switch to the 3 LEDs has been great for around camp for close range use. I recommend this piece to anyone who wants versatility because they don't know where they might end up. The camo is an added bonus worth the change, if you’re into that sorta thing.

CRKT Triumph Folder Knife DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 April 16, 2009

CRKT nailed it when they made the heavy duty Triumph folder. CRKT make the ebst knife for your money. They use technology and blade strength found in knives that cost well over $200. This thing came sharpe as can be right out of the box. The handle of the blade allows the "in hand" feel your looking for. The grip on the handle is out of this world, when dry or wet this grip will stick in your hand! The combo blade is great fro all situations in the field. if your serious about teh knife you carry with you- get a Triumph.

Rating for this product: 4 November 12, 2008

I've only taken these boots on one good length hike (7 miles) thus far. The Gore-Tex protected well against the High Uinta snow in October. I loved how well these boots gripped wet rocks and wet soil. The break-in process hasn't been too bad, they are a comfortable boot that will keep your feet dry. They are a bit heavy, but that's what you get when you want a bombproof housing for your feet.

Luckily a gear expert, who was familiar with this bag, helped me and recomended that I try the Long. I didn't give 5 stars simply becasue there is no thermometer, which would for sure make this watch one of the best MTN. watches out there. Arc'teryx Fugitive Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2008

I have had the Fugative for two years now and it has done anything I could ever expect a mid-layer hoody to do. Try one on to get the right size, some people think they run a little short, but most Arc'teryx stuff does. It handles wind great compared to other hoodies I've owned (Covert Hoody) and the fleece is thin, but only because it's compressed, so it's still thick and will keep you plenty warm. On super cold days throw this bad boy inside a Acr'teryx Gore-Tex Pro shell and you'll be in business, not to mention warm. When it really gets cold on the hill I layer this under my Stingray Jacket and more often than not I'm opening my pit zips to cool down a bit. Buy one, Now!

Polorchromic!

Smith Passage Sunglasses - Polarchromic

Smith Passage Sunglasses - Polarchromic

Rating for this product: 5 August 15, 2008

These glasses are the best glasses I've ever owned. I've had Smith Threshhold Interchangables, a couple of pair of Smith's regular polorized lensed glasses and the Passage Polorchromics are the best yet. If you are looking for a fishing lense, get Polorchromic. Polorchromic lenses are polorized, meaning they cut down the glare which allows you to see into teh water, but they are also photochromic which means they adapt to the given light in any situation. In the shade they allow more light to come into the lense, and in the bright sun they darken to keep bright light out. You'll need a pair of polorchomic lenses if you are serious about fishing til dark to hit the Caddis hatch. You'll thank me later, I promise.

Rating for this product: 4 August 15, 2008

I've liked my pair of Thresholds for biking best. The light weight frame allows me to ride longer rides and never even feel them on my face. The option of a clear lense is also huge for me and I like to ride DH with a clear lense for use in and out of the trees. The new Interlocks look sweet, but if you want light weight, go with the Thresholds. Get a polorized lense and a clear lense and you'll be set.
