not as good as the insulated air core

Big Agnes Clearview Air Pad

Big Agnes Clearview Air Pad

Rating for this product: 3 September 16, 2008

I own two insulated air core mats and love them. I tried this one out as the weight savings was intriguing. The mat was comfortable, but feels more like a durable pool floaty than other mats. My main complaint about the bag is how sticky it is; I have a nice down bag, and the bag sticks to well to the mat.

Bottom line: If you are counting ounces, this would be a nice addition to your gear, if you can deal with the sticky surface.

Adventure Medical Heatsheets Survival Blanket Two Person

Adventure Medical Heatsheets Survival Blanket Two Person

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2008

i use this blanket as a lightweight ground cover for backpacking in the sierra nevada mountains for my wife and me mainly to keep our stuff clean. we do not typically bring a tent, we just use this, our sleeping pad, a warm down bag, and a second emergency blanket for rain protection if needed. It holds up great for week long trips. It should be noted that it can be fussy to use in high winds, other than that, these are great to bring along!

my only pants

Patagonia Capilene 3 Bottoms - Women's

Patagonia Capilene 3 Bottoms - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 September 16, 2008

I bought these pants as my only long layer for hiking 90 miles of the JMT. They were not as fitted as I expected, being a little baggy in the upper half. they were plenty warm for the evenings, which were in the 40's. I didn't sleep in them, as my bag was warm enough. I loved the cranberry color with the scalloped edges and always looked forward to slipping into these after a long day of hiking. Would recommend.

Great Jacket from a Great Company

Norrøna Nansen Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket - Men's

Norrøna Nansen Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2008

After buying this jacket, I have used it for hiking in the rain and skiing. I have found it to be just the jacket I was looking for. My primary use for the jacket will be backpacking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, but I will also use the jacket a few times a year as an outer layer while skiing.

Likes:
Waterproof! (and breathable)
Lightweight!
The fit is athletic.
The cuffs are perfect.
The hood is large, yet cinches down in the front and back to provide a tight fit with perfect vision.
The two pockets are high enough for use with a backpack, and are a decent medium size.
The pit zips do not round the bend in the arm! (While they are not over-sized pit zips, I generally do not like pit zips because of the way many jackets bunch up under the arm, so I found these to be perfect)
The zippers are all waterproof.

Dislikes:
My only dislike with the jacket is minor. The front zipper is fairly stiff, so after tightening the waist drawstring, their is an outward bulge of the zipper near the bottom of the jacket.

All in all this is the jacket I have been looking for! The company is located in Norway, and after looking at their product catalog, I hope you will carry more of their products in the future!

Great Emergency Light

Petzl e+LITE Emergency Headlamp

Petzl e+LITE Emergency Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2008

I bought two of these hoping the light would work as a primary backpacking light for weeklong+ trips into the Sierras (extra batteries are small so their weight is negligible). I like the design of the light, but the output is a little less than I had hoped for. I backpack with my wife so I think we will carry one of these and one higher output light.
