Hestra Heli 3-Finger Glove

October 23, 2009

I would say for camera use, buy these or mitts. I have never had good experience with gloves or mitts while shooting. I take mine off. I may have a super thin liner to help, but when they get too cold, you want to throw them in something that is as warm as possible, ie the mitts or this 3 finger.

Hestra Heli 3-Finger Glove

October 23, 2009

This is not waterproof in that it has a membrane. It is waterproof since it is leather. I have these and love them. I once hucked a cliff and a rock caught my skis and I was in the pow digging them out for 20-30 min. After that I noticed they were wet around the seams, but they stayed warm and I did not notice them being wet inside. Hope that helps.

Skullcandy Asym Earbud Headphone

Skullcandy Asym Earbud Headphone

Rating for this product: 5 October 19, 2009

It took as little as 5 minutes for me to never want to take off my asyms!

The buds that come with the iphone/ipod hurt my ears really bad. Skullcandy in general are nice since you can customize the in-ear cushion, but most buds will hurt my ears, or they wont stay in for 5 minutes. Try biking, running, or doing any activity that requires you to move and buds will not stay in.

I once had a pair of headphones that clipped over the ear and that would a great idea, they stayed put, but again would hurt behind and inside the ear. Finally, the simplest design that allows you to utilize the cable as the over ear clip and the fit on the bud itself is incredible!

The volume controls is tough and will not move at the slightest touch. This is good for me since I run the cable under my shirt often.

The iphone model is stellar and a quality mic for sure. In fact I have the ipod touch and found an app that will allow me to make calls on it with the mic so double bonus for me!

Cable is transparent but braided underneath and looks super sturdy.

Get your last pair of headphones with these guys. They look a little different, but you wont look like a dinkus that cannot keep his ear buds in while charging up a mountain, or down it again.

Endura Venturi Event Bike Jacket - Men's

July 16, 2009

Happy, I totally agree and feel your pain. I have been converted to eVent last year and it is amazing. The tech details are controversial. Have you ever wondered why goretex specs always just say "guaranteed" for breatheabiltiy and waterproofing? Yeah being indirect seems to solve the problem.

That aside, this is one dope jacket and event is the most breatheable stuff I have ever used. you will not go wrong with this guy.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 1525 - 9460cu in

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 1525 - 9460cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 18, 2009

I have the Xl and yeah I fill it sadly. It is super durable. i have taken it to Alaska, and many a camping trips. I actually have the white one and it gets a little durable but easily washable. It turns a lot of heads because it is such a bright color where you normally dont see white. The extra shoulder straps turn into a way to carry it like a backpack. I have hucked this up 2 miles before like that. If you place your gear right it will feel moderately comfy.

The other nice thing is how water resistant it is. It will keep everything dry in a heavy rain. (I tested it with a hose.) It is not waterproof, but will keep dry if closed. I might have to snag a smaller one for a lighter trip too. Great for anything, rope bag, trailing a bike on a hitch etc.

One thing to note in this jacket is it wears HUGE! Yes I intended to use all caps there.

This is meant to be an overcoat parka for many layers underneath. I normally fit XL and am bigger than this guy and I can wear this in a L if I was just wearing a shirt under it. Granted if I was in antartica, which is where this is made for, I would want an XL and have many other layers under this.

Arc'teryx Fury SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 16, 2009

This is very similar to the stingray in water resistance and breatheability, but the fit and material is the main difference. This is gore windstopper, the Stingray is softshell. The gore softshell is probably not as "swishy" or "noisy". The stingray also allows for more layers underneath as it is meant to be worn as an outershell more than this fury. The extra room on Arcteryx jackets you will find not in the waist, but in the arms and chest mainly. They will still taper down to fit your waist right.

I am not sure exactly on this one specifically, but when you gofrom XL to L there is a difference of 1-2 inches on the back, which is the name of the measurement. Will these be warm enough. Hard to say without trying honestly. It depends on how you handle the cold and how cold it really is. I would get something a little tougher than these though. Lafuma Trek Jr. Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic - Kids'

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I got this for my daughter who is almost 3 feet tall (3 years old) and expect her to use it for a long time. There was no problem with her on one cold windy night and the construction is pretty dang strong for 44 bones! The fabric next to the fabric is pretty tough and hardly ever gets caught up in the zipper. I think this will last her a long time.

Bag comes with a stuff sack that is fine, but I can slap this in an event compression sack to keep it dry with other gear and I have no worries.

Big Agnes Moon Hill Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down w/ Mummy Pad

Big Agnes Moon Hill Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down w/ Mummy Pad

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

This is a sick sleeping bag and is super toasty warm. I notice people tend to have bad reviews for Big agnes because they misunderstand that they are not your normal sleeping bag! The bag has no insulation on the bottom. This is smart since there is no poin really since as soon as you lay on it, you have flattened any insulation there anyways. The pad is what keeps you warm on the ground. SO Big agnes slapped in a sleeve instead at the bottom to put the pad in. Never did I roll around and lose the pad from under me. Such a confort as compared to any other bag I ever had. It is kind of a love it or hate it system though. Some complain that is limits mobility in your bag or you cannot sleep on your side. I say they are babies! I am 270 lbs, and a big kid in the shoulders and gut. I was comfy on my side, back, stomach, anyway. Granted I was pretty snug in a few positions but I am not dancing in my bag, I am just trying to sleep and stay warm. This combo is a winner. The pad is tough, and rolls nicely. I might get an air core too for something lighter on the summer trips, but for 0 degrees, you will be toasty with the heavier pad. Big anges seems to rate a bag at 0 degrees, for example, and then they seem to out perform that by 5-10 degrees. Cant totally rely on that, but that is my experience with this one. The zipper is strong, goes about 3/4 down the side of the bag and zips in nicely into another if you get left and right zip bags. The best testament to these bags is my wife! She has had trouble finding a bag that fits her hips and keep her warm too. Yeah we could get a crap-bag from wal-town, but we wanted something that will work and is light. This bag won her over and she does not complain about being cold! Woohoo!

This is essentially a fleece, I dont know why you would put this fleece over another fleece. Yeah it is windproof, but the temp rating is really hard to determine. Are you going to be sitting down all day in the cold? Are you going to be running, very active, or just constantly moving from place to place? In reality even if you know that, it is still hard to determine unless you try it out and see if it works for you. This is pretty thin fleece and is mainly windproof. I would consider a softshell for something that is windproof, water resistant and about as thin, but if you are active keeps body heat in better, yet breathes so you dont overheat.

Water proof is exactly that, water cannot get through the material. Water resistant means the fabric will keep the water out for awhile, but after a long enough, or heavy enough, exposure water may get through. Water resistant fabric is often achieved by a spray coating on an otherwise non-repellant fabric.I sales person once told me that in order to be water proof, the seams of the garment, backpack, tent (whatever) had to be taped as well as the fabric had to be water proof. In answer to this specific jacket - it is water resistant, not waterproof, but this is good info to know the difference.

You can check with Necky and see what they can do. Another option is find a local paddle shop and see if they can put one on. Ideally the thing to do is pay the extra and get one with it already installed as it is a pain and sometimes will cost more to install it later. If it does not say 4 - season then it is a 3 season. It usually says it, but unless you see 4 season, it will handle everything but Everest... and a few other places.

Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 Ultra Light Tent: 3-Person 3-Season

August 28, 2008

I would say the copper spur merely because i am a huge fan of this tent. I have set it up in matter of a minute alone and the frame is super simple. The materials are tough but almost see-through because they are so light. (Dont worry, you will not be able to see through so privacy is solid.)The nemos are pretty cool since they dont require poles and are pretty dang light too. I have not heard or been able to test them in terms of strength against teh conditions so I cannot say, but I am a bit leary myself of theri strength compared to something like this.

Amazing, but small

Backcountry.com Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 28, 2008

I was so bummed. I am an XL in Arcteryx, westcomb jackets and XL in other backcountry shirts, but this I can barely fit in the XL! So sad... maybe I need to lose some weight anyways. Good thing they have XXL.
The wool on the outside is really nice touch, and yes will get all baled up under the arms, but it is cool I think. The fleece on the inside is so deceiving. The wool on the outside is no merino and looks like you can use it for sandpaper, but then you put your arms in and it feels like a bed of soft... fleece. The hood is bomber and has plenty of room, not helmet worthy but nice.
It is a more stylish item than a technical peice but would keep plenty warm under a shell regardless. I think the best part is the goat. Backcountry does a great job of not plastering their name everywhere, but a simple little goat on the collar. Classy!

The North Face Evolution Triclimate Jacket - Men's

August 1, 2008

Fortunately Backcountry is pretty cool about stuff like this - that Tech specs are pretty handy - Pockets: [Shell] 2 front, 1 chest, 1 internal; [Liner] 2 frontAlso look at all the detail pics. There are some that show that the fleece zips in. I would guess that any tnf jacket will fit in this guy. I dont know why you want a zip in. There is a reason MHW and tnf are pulling away from this style of jacket though. It stinks. I doubt the shell is lined with mesh, but maybe. I totally agree on the NTF's site sucking a big fat rock and sinking to the bottom of the lake with their new change recently. Seriously who uses Flash in selling high amounts of inventory? But you can always talk to teh good peeps at BC.com and ask them to pull the item to find out. Then you can post what they find out for you here!

Marmot Aeros Tent 3-Person 3-Season

July 31, 2008

That is the coolest thing, it is a pole fixer while out in the backcountry. Make sure to take it out with you. There might be some instructions on it, but say a pole bends or snaps; you can slap that around the break and still ahve a functional tent while hiking etc.

DAKINE Concourse Double Ski Bag

Technically no if you compare nylon - 420D vs 600d, but since this is much larger and holds two pairs it costs more. Beside either amount of nylon is going to hold up pretty fair.

Bomber Tent, Stellar Frame

Mountain Hardwear Casa 4 Tent 4-Person 3-Season

Mountain Hardwear Casa 4 Tent 4-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 July 31, 2008

Awesome, awesome awesome! The only drawback, like other MHW tents I have used is it is a very close and cozy 4 person tent. There is plenty of room if you want 3 and gear. The advantage is there is a longer floor about 7 ft, so if you staggered the bags, then 4 would fit decently.

The vesitbule is insanley huge and a great help to hold the gear or cook under. There is not venting but it has two zippers on the vestibule on either side and you can vent it a bit and still stay dry.

Oh and the zipers! Man the tags on them are long and you can zip everything up in like 2.3 seconds! I timed it... not really, but it is fast. The catch is if you go too fast you will catch the fly in the vestivule zippers. The zipper cover material is nice but is a pain, you just have to take it slow, but it is very easy to zip aside from that.

The frame structure is awesome too. Two poles. I have seen this system on a few others and it makes for a simple setup. I got this tent setup in 2 minutes all by myself in the rain! The frame is a little goofy since the two branches to the back have to cross but not a big deal.

The steaks are gimpy, but most tents have gimpy stakes so do yourself a favor and get some beavier stakes. I do not really need to stake it but you need to stake the two poins on the vesitbule. Maybe I was doing it wrong or it was raining, but I never got the vestibule completely taught.

There are 8 points total on the tent to stake, 6 on the body of the tent, aside from guylines. The two middle points never touched the ground without weight in the middle so it was a pain to get the stakes to stay put as they should have.

The clip system for the poles are solid and quick and painless. I am a fan of the sleeve but these clips made me happy on setup.

Gear pockets are minimal here. I was sort of bummed. you have tons of room on either side and no gear pockets, just the back and two small ones up front.

Two doors makes nice for a lot of room. At first I struggled with the middle piece there, but considering the opening of the tent, I really like how the doors open since that would be a huge door laying on the bottom fully unzipped. Great venting on the mesh and we stayed warm and dry the whole night even though I forgot a rain jacket so i was soaked going to bed.

It holds up great to wind and rain and I would take this anywhere. for a 4 man and 10 lbs it packs really small and the poles are super burly to hold up anywhere. my next step is snag the footprint for a light weight shelter. With this pole system setting up just the fly is a cinch!

The best part; this is definitely a family tent! I took my 2 year old daughter and very particular wife out on a rainy night with this thing and everyone was happy. Of course my daughter was regardless, she got to play in dirt, but it held up to her literally bouncing off the walls of the tent during the storm. It is not so heavy so I am happy to carry this puppy on our next hike for the amount of comfort and ease we had.

The North Face Heckler Backpack - 2050cu in

The North Face Heckler Backpack - 2050cu in

Rating for this product: 3 July 21, 2008

Bottom line you get what you pay for. It is everything it is advertised as. It is good construction and will not fall apart on you. The comfort level is minimal and does not breathe well on the back. If you need a school bag, this looks great since it has tons of room and all the other trendy kids at school will think you are cool too. The hip/waist belt is left wanting if you are really going to be hiking with this though. I prefer an actual hip belt that has padding not a lame strap. If you spend more for a day pack like from osprey or deuter, you will get a lot more, but if you are cheap snag this one for a nice pack.

Stay warm with Down

The North Face Nuptse Down Vest - Men's

The North Face Nuptse Down Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 21, 2008

Nice and light, works well under a jacket or on a nice fall day. Since this is not at all waterproof I prefer to have it under a shell since my arms stay warm generally instead of a whole down jacket. 700 down is a nice touch to keep it lighter and very packable if you don't want to wear it.

Plus since it is TNF you can always know you will look trendy on the streets of a big city.

Mountain Hardwear Helion 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Mountain Hardwear Helion 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 July 18, 2008

Okay this has got to be one of the most impressive tents I have ever seen. It is light, and very easy to setup. The setup is a little different. There are not hooks or sleeves but eyes you put teh poles through. Put the poles through all the eyes and then snap in the ends of the poles on the tent all at once and you will have a tent fast. The poles are awesome and very strong. The fly material is so dang light with that hollow core material but keeps you dry. I have a buddy that has used this in the snow and it works in any environment. The size of the tent is a cuddly 2 man tent is the one drawback. You will stay warm with two people but if you had a dog with you , you would love this tent.
