Yes the waist belt detaches, as do most of the other packs Hardwear makes. I have hauled this pack some..but the sides of the pack and the straps will wear out quickly if you hauled it often - if you need a haul bag might I suggest the Metolius Sentinel, its about the same size (2800)and will last a lifetime of hauling.

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Jacket - Men's
April 28, 2009
This jacket is designed for both, but certainly excels at insulating during cold and wet alpine assaults – one thing is for sure – it’s a great jacket that breathes well! You will probably need a L or a XL, it’s best to make a few simple measurements with a cloth tape measure, then check the sizing chart on this page. If you lack the availability of the cloth tape, use a bit of string to measure you chest, arms, etc…mark the string, then check the length with a standard tape measure.

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Men's
April 20, 2009
You found your shell right here with the Epic Jacket, for the price it can not be beat!! The Epic is very well built, big pockets and pit zips (you want those for sure!)- I have had one for 3 years now and it still sheds water like it did when it was new! Seems to me you will need a medium or possibly a large, depending on your sleeve length and so on, check the sizing chart on this page to be sure. If you need to spend under $100 let me suggest to you the Sierra Designs Hurricane HP ($73.96)- it has pit zips, pockets and a good reputation. Be weary of anything under $70, from my experience they just can't build them to last at that cost...

Hmmm...if you need a layering piece consider, perhaps, the MHW LoDown, it has pit zips and sheds water better and is a tad lighter. I would think an XL shell would fit fine over the XL Sub Zero, keep in mind this jacket is super warm - a perfect companion for slower pace travel!!!

April 13, 2009
Sounds like you would fit into a medium well. Although, if your chest/mid section is any larger than 41" (measure this with a layering piece on) you might want to consider a large, but at 5'6" the sleeves would probably start to get baggy - your best bet is the medium for sure. Depending on where your at, you might not need the 200 wt. fleece layer, this jacket is pretty warm.

March 27, 2009
You are looking in the right direction for sure! The Compressor jacket is a tad lighter, plus it stays warm if it gets soked and the Compressor is a tad longer. The Phantom is going to be warmer but if the down gets wet the jacket losses some warmth. They have about the same features and the Phantom packs down a little smaller. If you plan on needing you jacket for wet/soggy and cold conditions, go with the Compressor - it kinda sounds to me though, that the Phantom is going to be the better choice for you.

Mountain Hardwear Downhill Down Parka - Men's
December 16, 2008
For best performance, it is a good idea to keep your waterproof/breathable Gore-Tex® or Conduit™ shell clean and its DWR (durable water repellent) finish freshly charged. This means keeping oil and grease away from the garment, washing it when it gets dirty and reapplying its DWR finish.Shells can be machine-washed in warm (not hot) water using regular powdered laundry detergent. Wash in a front-loading washing machine only. Do not use Woolite, other cleaners with lanolin (or any other oil), or fabric softener. Put the garment through at least two rinse cycles, as the detergent can interact with the DWR finish and needs to be totally rinsed out of the material. After the shell has been washed, reapply the DWR finish while the garment is still damp. The heat of the dryer will help set the DWR finish into the fabric. Tumble dry on medium heat.We recommend you re-treat your shell at the beginning of your wet weather season, and at least once during the season. However, if you are washing your shell often, we recommend re-treating the DWR finish more frequently. For best results, use spray-on, rather than wash-in, products. Two brands we suggest are NikWax and Revivex from W.L. Gore. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application. Once you have successfully cleaned and refinished your shell, it should work as well as new again.Three-Layer TipIf the lining of your three-layer waterproof/breathable garment becomes coated with condensed moisture when you're working so hard the vapor can't be transported out fast enough, try this: Turn the garment inside out and give it a good shake. This will get rid of most of the moisture and return you to a relatively dry state.
