Runs a full size too small

The North Face Noble Stretch Capri Pant - Women's

The North Face Noble Stretch Capri Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 June 14, 2012

I agree with the other reader these run so small!! Im 5'7, 127, my dress pants are size two, usually a four in jeans..I ordered these in a four and the leg fit fine, but I could barely button them. I was also expecting the fabric to be a lot thinner (its more of a lightweight canvas), so I am not going to try a size 6. The stretch is fantastic though, they just don't meet my summer climbing needs.

The North Face Jacqui's Softshell Jacket - Women's

The North Face Jacqui's Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 20, 2011

Perfect for layering under a shell for cooler ski days, and perfect alone for warmer spring days. I love that the hood is removable, as well--makes it easier to layer. I am 5'8 120 lbs (size 2) and the small fit really well (everything was long enough!!) with a fitted baselayer under it.

prAna Ashley Legging - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2011

These are amazing! Thick enough that I feel secure wearing them in public outside of climbing and yoga, but still great for wearing under skirts/dresses. I am right between a size 2 and 4 (5'8, 122 lbs) and the extra small fit great. Also had plenty of length for my long(ish) legs! I prefer them for yoga and climbing, but I have run in them and they were great--I just prefer my nike running tights for running--but if you are looking for one pair of tights to do it all, I cannot recommend these enough!!!!!

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

August 1, 2010

I have both the mammatus and the alpha sv and i actually prefer my mammatus. I like the Gore Pro Shell Stretch better--its a much softer fabric, not so damn stiff. The mammatus is a touch lighter (apprx. 50 grams). I also use mine mostly for mixed alpine climbing, so I appreciate the extra stretch and less noise. The only thing that really bugs me abut the mammatus is the reflective taping around the zippers--it looks much better on the mens version, but its still ugly. Last comment, yeh, TNF makes a lot of showy, logo bearing "lifestyle" pieces, but most of the summit series line is pretty good...they dump all the profits from the denalis into development of technical wear. Anyway, thats my 2 cents on the mammatus, but try them both out and see what one fits better, etc...with backcountrys guarantee, plus lifetime warranties on Arc and TNF you really cant go wrong either way!

ups and downs, great for the price

Columbia Rubber Ducky Deux Rain Jacket - Women's

Columbia Rubber Ducky Deux Rain Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 February 18, 2010

This is going to sound like a contradictory review, but here we go...I love this jacket; the plaid is fun, the price is right, and the fit is great (5'7 130 lbs, medium is perfect). Its also plenty water resistant for my 20 min walk to work. For me its a perfect jacket.

HOWEVER, this jacket does not breathe, at all. NONE. Its like wearing a plastic rain suit. This is a great jacket for the pacific NW (i live in portland, but travel to seattle often as well), where its mild (50-60 degrees) and rainy. Absolutely do not buy this if you live in a warm weather, humid area--I lived in florida for 4 years and this jacket would be hell if i wore it there.

Also, the material is polyurethane coated cotton, so the feel of the jacket is also very rubbery--i dont mind, but i know one of my friends hates it.

Lastly, this garment is NOT seam taped, so it is not actually waterproof--just highly water resistant. I am fine walking 20 minutes to work in moderate to light rain, but eventually water will soak in at the seams.

All in all, you get what you pay for...this is a fabulous jacket for under $100, but if you need something that is seam sealed and breathable, shell out the $200+ (I highly recommend The North Face Grace Jacket for complete waterproof and breathable protection).

its almost identical in design--there was an issue with the seam taping and lining delaminating and this model corrects that. The only issue you may run into is sizing....TNF used to advise ordering a size down, as they ran big---they have now "corrected" that and you should order "true to size"...its possible you have a "small" and may now need a "medium".

worst one ski quiver ever....best powder ski ever

Line Pandora Ski - Women's

Line Pandora Ski - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 December 16, 2009

im so sick of eric pollard going on and on about how every ski he makes is just the best on everything...well, this ski sucks on anything but steep, deep powder, but hey, thats what its for, right!?! had them out all day on variable mixed conditions--the steep bowls at the top of mt. hood were dry and fluffy and the pandoras were fantastic. tree runs with 4 ft of powder, they handled like champs. i really noticed a difference with the early rise--my boyfriend was skiing line lizzies and was having issues getting his tips out of the heavy pow. after the bowls got tracked out we headed over to the other side of the mt, which was icy and windblown....i didnt know a ski could handle so poorly--because they are so soft, any "bump" you hit, they bounce you non-stop. The other skis in my quiver--the volkl mantras just plow through anything, so I wasnt used to being tossed around. Serious, my sports bra supported A cup boobs had a sad afternoon! So then off to the groomers....SLOW, again compared to my mantras, i couldnt get these things to move. to finish off the day, over on the lower mountain it was rainy, with soft slushy snow and they handled pretty well, since the snow was so soft they could plow through--but the tree runs had crusted over snow and again, pandora hell. Conclusion: kick ass ski for steep deep powder and agile turning in the trees--I highly recommend them for anyone looking for a super soft powder ski.....absolutely horrible for anything else. Oh, Im 5'7, 135 lbs and ski the 172's (170 is my standard length, so with the early rise, these are a tad shorter than Im used to). I would also seriously consider switching out my 4fnt vct's for these as my AT skis--they really are nice and light, I think my vct's are still more versatile though, since I only have 1 AT ski.

Cloudveil Inertia Peak Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 November 26, 2009

not at all what i expected--jacket is like a stretchy canvas material with no backing. the fabric is pretty thin and i dont really believe that it is "highly" water resistant (to me, highly water resistant is like waterproof...there is no way this would keep you dry in any real rain). this is definitely a lifestyle piece and styled in fit to be such...i was looking for a technical, traditional softshell for spring and fall hiking (like a lighter weight TNF Apex or Patagonia Talus) and this was NOT it. would be good for casual everyday spring and fall wear. fit is true to size (im 5.7 140 always a medium, and medium fit fine).

for as long as i can remember ive used patagonia capilene for my baselayers, however, i was bored with the simplicity and wanted a pattern, so I bought these and i LOVE them!! The stretch is fantastic, its as warm as a midweight baselayer should be, and the design and colors are fun. i would highly recommend these!! fit is true to size--5'7 140 lbs, a medium in everything i buy and this was no exception!

ok pants

Salomon Thruster Loose Pant - Women's

Salomon Thruster Loose Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 October 12, 2009

im iffy on these pants--partly because im used to the quality and design of cloudveil, patagonia, and arcteryx--ive never owned ski pants under $300. however, no one makes brown pants and I found these on SAC or Tramdock at 60% off and i figured why not. ANYWAY, on to the review...I love the light insulation--however, they are on the front of the legs--fine for AT, but for resort skiing, I want insulation on my bottom for a cold chairlift. I love the soft shell and hard shell mix--they are really flexible in all the right places and great for when i snowboard, as i can sit in the snow (hardshell on back of legs). The fit is also slimming--im 5'7 140 lbs between size 6-8, I ordered an 8, but i could easily go down a size--so they are definitely true to size--they are definitely not baggy, stiff pants. I hate the pocket placement...the two "handwarmers" are so high my jacket covers them, so they are worthless--the bottom pocket, which i thought was going to be thigh area is actually on the cuff--what is the point of a pocket way down there?!? Lastely, the gaiters on the ankle are elastic only, so there is no way to adjust for size--since the pants are slim fit, they REALLY flare at the bottom--a simple snap to make them tighter would have been great. All in all, solid pants for $50 with 20K waterproofness, just dont expect high end features.

DC Ace Insulated Pant - Women's

DC Ace Insulated Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 September 24, 2009

A few things.... First, cobblestone is actually a light plaid, its not a solid khaki color as it appears in the large picture. You can kinda see it on the logo closeup, but check out the DC Beacon pants and they have lots of fabric close ups. Although i like the plaid i really wanted a flat solid color. On to the fit...im 5'7' and 140 lbs--i have fairly wide hips and solid legs and the medium fits good, but its slim fit--which i love cause all my other snowboarding pants are super baggy. Features--I love the vents--these can be semi rare on an insulated pant. Only complaint is that the zipper on the bottom by the boots is too small--no big deal for snowboarding, but will be obnoxious when i ski in them cause i undo my boots for the gondola ride and ill have to pull up the pant and the gaiter. otherwise they are warm and waterproof!

Black Diamond Mercury Mitten - Men's

August 25, 2009

the liner has a trigger finger--so thumb and index fingers are independent and the others are mitten style...REALLY helps with dexterity. as for warmth that depends what youre using them for-- i bought these for mountaineering and my hands were hot in -5 F w/60mph winds, however, i had an elevated heart rate...when i use them for AT i usually just use the shells on the way up and add the liners for the ski down. i used them at a resort on a 10 degree day and i was fine... i originally purchased them because i couldnt afford the OR Alti Mitt (the god of mittens) and i would never switch! As for quality, not only have i had mine for two years (and through a few dozen summits), my pitbull puppy thought they would make a great chew toy...obviously i dont know how long he had it, but id guess a good 20-30 minutes and the only damage was to the drawstring..no punctures to the leather, etc. Also, when i purchased these they did not have a womens version, and i know my hands tend to get colder than the guys--so its probably a safe bet that they would even have a better temp rating for you! hope that helps...

six layers??!!?? thats crazy...you should always wear a moisture wicking baselayer (like capilene 3) and then a midlayer. your midlayer is usually a fleece--and you can change the weight depending on how cold it is (ex. patagonia's regulator series--either the R1, R2, R3, or R4 jackets. last layer is your shell to water and windproof. Three layers is all you need and patagonia's sizing is designed to accommodate those layers.
