I used the Dakine Guide backpack for a 3 week trip to Europe. Close contenders were the Osprey Porter 46 and the Gregory G Pack. The fabric of the ultralight Gregory seemed too fragile for train travel. The Osprey offered better security. I went with the Dakine because I foresee using this pack all winter. My crosscountry skis and snowshoes will carry nicely, and I made sure my kid's snowboard strapped on well, too. I was able to tuck the many straps for travel during plane and train travel. Good volume and convenient access through back panel.
