Kelty Pinnacle Kid Carrier - 2003 Model

Rating for this product: 2 June 4, 2003

In summary, the Kelty Pinnacle is a very expensive flashy child carrier that is adequate for a stroll in the park, but dangerous for long day-hikes or backpacking trips. With some investment of time and resources it can be modified to work for carrying larger children on backcountry trips, but after paying $275, you expect the thing to work right out of the box.

I would strongly recommend the Kelty Expedition, if you can still find one. If not, start with a more basic "new generation" Kelty pack, like the Backcountry for $100 less, and add a $25 diaper duffel, stirrups, and if desired, a $5 water bag. (The Backcountry model and up have essentially the same frame, child seat and sun/rain hood, which are the only good parts of this line of packs). You'll still have to find workarounds for the poorly designed shoulder and waist belts, though, and will be severely limited in the amount of gear you can bring.
