I hiked the Appalachian Trail this summer with this pack, so I know it well. The zipper being on one side isn't a problem b/c you won't use that zipper anyway. Every serious hiker I have ever met has a trash bag lining the inside of the pack so you can't access your items from the side, only through the top. The answer above is also correct, this is a way to save weight b/c every ounce on a 2200 mile trip counts. If you are considering this pack, get it! Great pack and great company.
