The North Face Baltoro 400 II Boot - Men's

December 20, 2008

They could be used as hiking boots for normal, non-snow conditions, but with 400g of insulation (designed to keep your feet warm down to -40*F), your feet would probably overheat unless it was still winter-like temperatures. Thus, they're pretty much limited to use during the winter, although not necessarily with snow, just colder conditions.

Rossignol BC 70 Positrack Ski

December 15, 2008

You should be looking at the 179cm length, which is based upon your weight not height. Nordic skis are sized based upon your weight because it is essential to match the ski stiffness (stiffer skis are also generally longer) to make sure that you're not dragging the grip portion of the ski (as would happen with an overly flexible ski) or can't compress the grip section (due to an overly stiff camber).

La Sportiva Sandstone GTX-XCR Hiking Shoe - Men's

Since you lie more or less exactly between a 43 & 43.5, it depends on how other similar shoes fit. When you say you "usually wear a 10", are you talking about other hiking shoes? If not, be aware that hiking shoes/boots fit differently than say running shoes because they're designed to be worn with slightly thicker socks. Thus, your best bet is probably to order both the 43 & 43.5 and compare the fits and see which fits better (& return the other pair).

December 6, 2008

Yes, you do buy skis by weight because the ski effectively just "feels" how much weight you are transferring, meaning that the heavier you are, the stiffer of a ski you need. Stiffness is important to get right because if you're on an overly stiff ski you won't have any traction (the grip area won't be compressed into the snow, which causes problems since the rest of the ski is simply designed to glide with minimal friction) and an overly flexible ski will slow you down because the grip area is constantly dragging (think of leaving the emergency brake on constantly in your car).As for the ease of release of these boots, this depends more on the binding than anything else. These bindings are fairly simple; just step in with the toe loop into the proper area and then to release, just press the tip of your pole into the little black release button directly in front of the rubber toe bumper.

December 6, 2008

A size 44.5 boot is equivalent to a US size 11. As for best length of ski, nordic skis are actually fitted by weight (longer lengths are generally also stiffer, meaning that the ski requires more weight to compress the grip area into the ground). This is important because too stiff of a ski won't provide enough grip (no contact of the grip area = no propulsion because the rest of the ski is simply designed to glide) and an overly flexible ski will have the grip area constantly in contact with the snow, slowing you down in a similar manner to having the emergency brake constantly engaged in your car.

Swix Star Advanced Pant - Women's

December 6, 2008

The major difference between the Star Advanced Pant and the Powder Pant is the fabric. The Star Advanced are made of a water/wind-repellent microfiber on the front and have an elastic spandex back for breathability. In contrast, the Powder Pant has a 2-layer windproof & water-resistant membrane (with a warm brushed lining) and approximately the same back. The other major difference lies in zipper length; knee length in Star Advanced & 3/4 length (mid-thigh) on the Powder Pant. If you think your daughter actually needs windproof (& not just wind-resistant) pants, get the Powder pants. The Powder pants would also be slightly warmer due to their lining (on the front of the leg).

Salomon Elite 6 Grip Ski

December 6, 2008

If you want to get the correct ski for your girlfriend, your best option would be to go to a local nordic shop and get fitted for skis since each ski will be slightly different in how it transmits her weight onto the snow and how stiff they are. The 2nd point is essential because an overly stiff ski won't flex and let the grip section contact the snow (thus, no propulsion, just slipping) and an overly flexible ski will constant drag the grip section (similar to leaving on the emergency brake constantly in your car).

December 6, 2008

While the actual installation of nordic bindings is relatively easy (just drilling holes in correct place and then screwing in the binding), it is best to have it done by a shop in order to ensure that they are mounted in the correct position (i.e., so that when you exert force, the binding loads the ski in the proper position, usually somewhere around its balance point).

The only noticeable difference between these two pairs of boots is the lacing system. If you like the convenience of just slipping your boots on and spending maybe 10 seconds tightening the cable, the Boa lacing system is for you. However, if you're worried about it failing (which has a very, very low probability), go with the traditional laces that could easily be fixed in the field. Also, with regard to waterproofing, that is all coming from the Gore-Tex lining...so as long as the Gore-Tex remains in good condition, you're all set.

Excellent Jacket

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 21, 2008

If you're looking for a minimalist, very light rain jacket that will keep you extremely dry, then look no further. With the entire body made of Gore-Tex Paclite & the only frills being pitzips (waterproof zippers, so no flaps to add weight), and 2 hand pockets (also waterproof zippers), this jacket is incredibly light. However, unlike other lightweight jackets I've had in the past, this one really stands up to normal wear without realling showing it and without sacrificing useful features. For instance, the pockets aren't lined with cheap mesh, but instead are simply an additional layer of Gore-Tex Paclite layered over the body, allowing me to leave the pockets open without getting cold (although there is the downside that they can't be used for venting). This also means that if I do accidentally leave the pockets open in a rainstorm, that I still stay completely dry. The only downside I found was that when wearing the hood without a helmet, the hood requires a lot of cinching down, which creates very long lengths of cord on the back of the hood (where the hood volume is adjusted), which can flop around and hit you in the head in heavy winds. Also, it should be noted that the zippers are a little stiff when first used, but gradually become easier to use with use.

When I was buying these tights, I tested both the M & L (I'm 6'2"/155 lbs) because I often find the inseam to be too short on many tights. However, I found that these run slightly longer than other running tights, so the M was perfect for me because the L had way too large of a waist. As for you, I'd imagine that sizing by height is probably better than by weight since you're almost into the listed weight for a M. However, probably the best way to figure out what is best (if possible) is to order both the M & S and then only keep whichever one fits better.

Overall Good Trail Shoes with Minor Flaws

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 7, 2008

While these trail shoes are very comfortable & are generally perfect for what I usually run (trails with relatively even surfaces), they do have 2 minor flaws that will likely make me think twice before going for them again (I've had 3 pairs over the past 2 years). First, the soles wear unusually fast, lasting only 3 months of approximately 25 miles/wk (~75 mi/month) before the rubber in the forefoot & heel is nearly completely gone. Second, they tend to develop a hole in the mesh upper right where they flex near the toe after only 2 months, which in my experience has quickly expanded until I couldn't use them at 3.5 months for my latest pair. For this much money I would expect a better quality shoe, especially with regard to sole durability.

Excellently Designed Gaiter for Cheaper than OR Crocodiles

This gaiter is markedly similar to OR's flagship gaiter (the Crocodiles), although with a non Gore-Tex (although still waterproof) upper, non-replaceable instep strap, and slightly less beefy lower section (500 denier for Verglas vs. 1000d lined w/ 8 oz packcloth). However, I found the OR Verglas to be more than adequate for backpacking & light mountaineering, with the uppers letting no water in and the lowers providing sufficient durability to only display 2 small scratches from crampons. Also, as for the replaceable instep strap of the OR Crocodiles, I've had my Verglas for nearly 2 years of weekly hiking or backpacking trips of ~10 miles and my instep strap still looks great.

So Versatile...Almost Photochromatic

Zeal Maestro Sunglasses - Polarized

Zeal Maestro Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 April 25, 2007

While at first glance the Maestro's amber lens tint would appear to be less effective than the standard mirrored gray lenses, it actually provides much better performance. Zeal’s combination of polarization and amber tint in the Maestro enhances depth perception and contrast and while not photochromatic, provide nearly perfect vision in the majority of situations that most people will find. In addition, the Maestro are nearly unbreakable due to the construction of hinges. The lenses are sufficiently large to effectively block both wind and sunlight and the hydrophilic temples combine with spring-loaded hinges to provide a highly secure fit, even when sweating profusely. Finally, the Maestro are sufficiently stylish as to be street-worthy no matter your attire.
