Arc'teryx Miura 30 Backpack - 1831-2136cu in

This bag is awesome. It will take almost any bullet you can shoot at it--by bullet I mean serious abuse from sandstone, granite, etc.

If your looking for an ultralite bag this is not it, but then the muiras are designed for situations and abuse that would instantly vaporize an ultralite pack.

The features are fantastic. I love that the pack completely opens down the side so the whole front of the pack folds down. The gear slings on the inside are a great touch. The belt provides good support and holds the bag tight against your back without getting in the way. The roll top is just cool and is easier than unclipping and removing a top pouch to get into the main compartment. Also the roll top does not get in the way of the top pouch that is there. The removable rope straps are great for attaching lots of rope and it's nice that they can be moved from the back to the top of the pack for comfort or preference.

It is a fantastic bag for the approach hike and depending on how much climbing (or canyoning) gear and rope you need to take I find that 30-35 liters is good for between 2-4 days.

All in all i think it is my favorite bag of this size that I have ever come across.

Arc'teryx does it again . . . of course the Arc'teryx awesomeness also comes with an Arc'teryx price tag . . .

MSR Reactor 1.7L Stove System

MSR Reactor 1.7L Stove System

I recently bought this stove to replace my 20 year old whisperlite. I love it. The size initially seems large until you realize that your entire kitchen minus the food fits into the included pot. It boils very fast and the design of the pot maximizes the fuel use efficiency. It is very light and packable. I have not yet used it in extreme conditions (I have only used it at sea level in the summer on an ocean kayaking trip) but I look forward to taking it to some harsher conditions.
It is a little pricey but MSR has made an astounding product in this stove.

MSR WhisperLite Stove

MSR WhisperLite Stove

Rating for this product: 5 November 30, 2009

This is one of the best stoves in my opinion. It is not the lightest but is very reliable. A friend bought one in the late 80's, my dad bought it from the friend, and I took it from my dad. Now, twenty years, dozens of trips and hundreds of nights later it is just begining to have some performance problems. This is a marvelous stove. If you are considering buying it also chech out the whisperlite internationale for it's ability to burn multiple fuels. That can come in very handy.

This stove is excelent for most backpacking (as long as you don't want to cook a major meal). For heating water it works great. I have used mine multiple times in diverse temperatures (0F-100+F) and altitudes (up to about 12,000ft) and have not been disapointed. For the price it is a fantastic water boiler. No complaints. You also can count on MSR quality.

Lafuma Warm'n Light 1000g II Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

Lafuma Warm'n Light 1000g II Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 November 29, 2009

This is a great bag. It stuffs down super small and only takes up a corner of your pack. If you're into minimalist fast and light packing this is a great bag. I give it four stars, not because there's anything wrong with it, but because there's better out there. If you are willing to pay a little extra check out the Golite adrenaline series (0, 20, and 40 degree rated bags). Golite uses 800 fill down as opposed to Lafuma's 650 (Translation: greater loft relative to weight and size). That combined with the Golite's fabric, zipper length and placement, and reinforced head and foot box make it the five star bag.
Bottom line: This bag is good, no, it's great, however if you can squeeze a little more out of the money tree check out the golite adrenaline series.

Lafuma Warm'n Light 1000g II Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

The specs say that the bag stuffs that small because 12 X 6 is the size of the stuff sack. The bag can actually stuff smaller than that and the stuff sack has compression pulls on it to get it as small as it can go.
Another line of bags that also packs seriously small is the Golite Adrenaline series. Great bags although they tap the wallet a little harder. Golite uses 800 fill as opposed to the 650 that Lafuma uses in these bags which gives the Golite more loft over the Lafuma relative to weight and size. I have been impressed with both the Lafuma warm'n light series and the Golite adrenaline series.
Final note: The Lafuma is good but if your willing to drop the extra cash I would suggest going for the Golite Adrenaline.

MSR MIOX Purifier w/ Batteries

MSR MIOX Purifier w/ Batteries

Rating for this product: 5 February 24, 2009

This purifier is the best ive had. It uses electricity to basically create clorine from salt to put in the water. It works great, is about the size of a mini-maglight, is incredibly light, and even though it uses clorine it doesn't make the water tast bad. The only draw back is that since it is not a filter it does not remove silt from cloudy water. It is great for clear water from rocky streams or lakes. If you want to go fast, light, and compact this is the filter. If you backpack through areas with silty/cloudy water, I suggest the MSR miniworks.
