Another slam-dunk

Patagonia Print Boucau Halter Bikini Top - Women's

Patagonia Print Boucau Halter Bikini Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 12, 2012

Bought this top because I wanted something a bit more sturdy than the Kupala top (and to match a different colored bottom half). Even for small ladies, this top does the job. Stays in place while playing frisbee, sandy mock surf wrestling, running around, and generally frolicking. Patagonia's fabric is high quality and I can tell that the elastic won't wear out by the end of the season.

Ordered an XS, 5'3" 32A

Icebreaker Tech V-Neck Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 12, 2012

I own a handful of IB shirts/skirts/dresses now and have only had one other miss when it came to sizing and fit. This shirt runs a bit larger through the bust than all of the other items that I own. The material and color are superb, per usual, but I ultimately gave it to a friend who could fill it out better.

Ordered XS, slightly too big through the bust/shoulders (32A; 5'3")

Icebreaker Villa Dress - Women's

Icebreaker Villa Dress - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 12, 2012

Bought this dress in two colors - pewter and metro/blizzard - and if I could live in it, I would. The fit is true to size, though the vee neck is lower than the red dress on the model would suggest. Easy to dress up or dress down depending on the occasion. I love how it has just enough sleeve to be work appropriate, but not stuffy.

The belt actually wraps around a few times, which makes it look a lot nicer and hold everything in place.

Another slam dunk by IB!

Patagonia Print Adour Bikini Bottom - Women's

Patagonia Print Adour Bikini Bottom - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 28, 2012

With slightly more coverage than the Bayone bottoms - but not as much as the Sunamee or Paries - these are still sexy without being too cheeky. Sizing is true to the rest of Patagonia underwear/swimwear: you can probably wear either one of two sizes. Size up for more coverage, down for less.

These babies don't fall down when being active and don't become wedgie-tastic when sliding around on rocks: just the way I like 'em.

I generally take size 0/2, the XS fits perfectly.

Barely is just enough

Patagonia Barely Bra A/B - Women's

Patagonia Barely Bra A/B - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 28, 2012

Perfect amount of support for petite gals - I've worn it running, hiking, working...swimming...pretty much everywhere. Elastic is stretchy enough not to completely smoosh what little nature gave me, but robust enough to keep everything where it belongs. Doesn't smell bad after a week in the woods, and dries quickly.

Only (minor) drawback is that it doesn't have any sort of closure, so I kind of need to wriggle in and out of it.

Highly recommended - bought XS, usually 30-32A, fits perfectly.

Great climbing top

Patagonia Pinback Top - Women's

Patagonia Pinback Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 17, 2012

Fits slightly smaller than most other Patagonia tops - XS fits perfectly with my 5'3", 32A frame. The shelf bra holds everything in place, and the low back is great for when the gym is particularly toasty.

Only minor issue with the design is that the straps could stand to be made out of a less stretchy material, I feel like the top sometimes slips down a little bit over time. The top is more fitted through the ribs/waist than the picture would lead you to believe and the ruching is less dramatic (at least in an XS).

Great Dress!

Patagonia Spright Dress - Women's

Patagonia Spright Dress - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 17, 2012

Love this dress, fits true to size (for Patagonia dresses, at least). The fabric is light and soft and doesn't wrinkle much, even when left at the bottom of a go-bag for spontaneous mountain adventures. The back is really unique and probably my favorite part of the design.

Snug through the waist, even though there is an empire seam. The shelf bra offers enough support without adding too much extra fabric or structure to the dress.

Ordered an XS, fits a little loose in the top but the straps hold everything in place (32A bust).

Linen pants have to be one of my favorite things for the spring/summer - breathable, soft, don't look too bad when kinda wrinkled. I was stoked to find these Patagonia pants - they fit like a pair of trousers (dress em up, dress em down), but run a bit on the long side. I wear mine with heels or roll them up with flip flops. tempted to buy a second pair and hem them shorter. True to size in the waist, fit is easy through the hips/thighs, which is flattering for us athletic ladies.

Almost awesome

Scarpa Vapor Climbing Shoe - Vibram XS Edge - Women's

Scarpa Vapor Climbing Shoe - Vibram XS Edge - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 May 13, 2012

Scarpa runs small, I am a half-to-full size bigger in Scarpa climbing shoes than I am in similar Sportivas (usually a 34.5, I ordered 35 and 35.5)

Lets preface this review by saying these shoes just weren't a good fit for my (admittedly tiny) feet. The big toe-to-heel length was great-to-good in the 35 and the 35.5, but in both sizes, it felt as if my 2nd smallest toes were being broken if I had to put any weight on my toes. I chock this up to having a bit too much room at my 2nd and 3rd toe that allowed my smaller toes to slide towards the center.

That being said, these suckers sure can grip. When I wasn't standing around in them looking at a problem and actually on the wall, the discomfort was easier to ignore (and all my toes remain unbroken) as I was working my way up the wall gecko-style. The bend of the shoe is pretty damn aggressive, I'm not sure if it's as dramatic in the bigger sizes.

Bottom line: great shoes (if your toes are the right shape and size) for an aggressive female climber. If my feet didn't fit so poorly in them, I'd have kept them in a heartbeat.

Everything I Ever Wanted

Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 Super Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 Super Light Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 April 17, 2012

I've been through a few tents in the past two years (Marmot Aura 2P - awesome save for the weight; Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 - see my review for some nitpicking) and I think I finally found THE PERFECT TENT with the BA Seedhouse 2. Lightweight? Check. Spacious? Check. Small when packed up? Double check.

Preface this with the fact that I'm 5'3" and have a new rule about the height limits of my hiking partners - haven't had an opportunity to stick someone tall in it. With two sub-6' humans, there is enough room to not kill each other on a rainy day, but little enough extra space that it doesn't feel like we should have brought more stuff along. Space-conscious without being overly stingy.

BA's material for their UL/SL tents is fantastic - breathable and lightweight without being fragile. The vestibule is roomy enough to stash wet boots and bags and the odd bit of random other gear.

There is reflective detailing on the tent, which effectively ruins my ability to gripe about the color scheme. Easy to find at night! All in all, get your act together and buy this tent.

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

April 3, 2012

Make sure that you have the heel piece set tight enough, they should snap into place when you're putting them on and put up moderate resistance when taking them off. Try moving the pieces closer to each other by a hole and fiddle around with the fit before you head out next time. Its easier to play with crampons when it's not freezing out.

I've stepped out of my crampons exactly once, and it was because I hadn't snapped them into the correct spot on the heel of my boot. Double check when you put them on that they seat correctly.

Patagonia Print Kupala Bikini Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2012

Bought these to match some Bayonne bottoms - sizing is refreshingly true (XS really is for a bust of ~32-30A). I really dig the criss-cross straps as it makes me feel like it won't go anywhere if I decide to play around in the water. Secure like a racerback top, but cute like a halter - a good mix!

If you have larger girls, I'd suggest sizing up for slightly more coverage.

Patagonia Print Bayonne Bikini Bottom - Women's

Patagonia Print Bayonne Bikini Bottom - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2012

As has been said before, these bottoms run on the small side - makes me glad I've been skiing and biking all winter. I disregarded some Patagonia reviewers' advice to size up and I am glad I did, as this will be my less active suit this summer (certainly the cheekiest suit that I own). I won't be water skiing or doing anything too active, but the fit is flattering.

Toes (cheeks?) the line between cute-but-daring and Brazil.

Icebreaker Nature Ultralite Siren Cami - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 30, 2012

(4/5 stars because even though it didn't work for me, it's still a great shirt)

I bought this tank as a followup to my purchase of the Ultralite Tank (similar design, wider straps and no shelf bra) and sadly need to return it. The fit - including the adjustable straps is great save for one aspect: the gathering under the bust. I don't know if it would look less silly if I could fill it out better, but it just didn't look, well, right.

Top notch quality and color, not suitable for small busted ladies. Will be sticking with the unsupported tanks/camis from now on!

Like these pants

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Women's

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 12, 2012

The amount of time I spent obsessing over these pants before I bought them was probably unwarranted but overall I am happy with them. Fit isn't absolutely perfect - a little gappage in the back of the waistband and a weird pulling at the snap closure in the front (almost like my hips are angled differently than the model the pants were based off) - but the legs fit great and these pants feel like fleecy tights. Great for skinning and backcountry skiing. The rise isn't as low as I was expecting, they hit a finger or so below my belly button. The legs are a smidgen long for use with my ski boots, but the extra length is great for hiking. As has been said, there's no inner lining/snow cuff, but the cuff fits nice and snug around the tops of my ski boots (I pull them down to the ankle and fold up the back a little bit to expose the walk mode switch). On the plus side, the teal zipper details in the shale/ceramic color matches my Niagra Arc'teryx shell PERFECTLY.

I bought an XS - 5'3" 115lbs. My guy friends like skinning behind me when I wear them, which can only mean that my primary goal of looking good in the woods has been achieved with these pants.

Awesome tank

Icebreaker Nature Ultralite Siren Tank - Women's

Icebreaker Nature Ultralite Siren Tank - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 7, 2012

This tank has survived several weekends in the whites as a baselayer under both wool and synthetic layers, as well as on its own during warmer conditions. Not itchy or scratchy, I hardly notice I'm wearing it! A little bit lower cut than I figured it would be (the product picture is accurate), but I dig the shape. True to size, the mystic color is a nice bright purple that looks especially good next to my orange and teal shell layers. Also good for a night out, as the Mystic color is beautiful and bold and the cut looks fancy.

I seriously need to pick up another one or two, it very well may replace my capeline shirts for summer hikes.

Update: bought another in the Ember color, still awesome but the red is a little more transparent than the purple, so plan your underthings/layering accordingly!

(5'3", 32" bust, XS fits perfectly)

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skin

Rating for this product: 5 February 24, 2012

After a rather awesome evening spent eating brownies and trimming these guys upon their delivery (using the included skin-trimmer, which is perfection in razor blade form), finally got a chance to actually get out on them recently. Gripped great on icy, slushy nastiness, as well as in the fresh pow pow that happened later. Glide is better than the BD Ascensions I've tried, stick is superb (at least in New England, where the snow is eternally sub-par).

The adjustable tip bracket thingies don't fit my skis perfectly, but once everything is in place, nothing budges.

Bombshells bring sexy back, sort of

22 Designs Bombshell Telemark Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 February 14, 2012

I was absolutely in love with these bindings the first 10 or so days I used them - they are also probably the only bindings on the market (at least that I could find after a few weeks of sleuthing) that actually fit my boots as-is out of the box - sz 21.5. If you have small feet, these bindings are your main option.

For going downhill, they are elegantly simple in how they work: stiff when you want it, flexy when you don't, and keep my feet attached to my planks. The pink doesn't hurt, either!

Uphill, I take the cable guides out for touring, as they suggested, and it works acceptably. The lack of a free pivot means you work a bit extra and going up steep stuff is kind of a hassle. Definitely not the best touring binding, but worth it for the way down if that's more your jam.

Bottom line: buy these if you have small boots, want down-focused bindings, like pink, and/or want to show the boys how it's done.

Sweet ride

Black Diamond Ember Ski - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2012

I was initially concerned that these skis would be simply too much for me - 168 length, 95 underfoot, but my first ride on them yesterday proved to me otherwise (I'm about 115lbs, 5'3" and they were just the right amount of ski). For how long and fat these babies are, they are shockingly nimble. Excellent torsional rigidity meant that they stuck to the crappy ice and grit that sneaked through the surface towards the end of the day, and the camber and sidecut meant that I hardly had to work to turn them. Almost as much fun at the resort as in the backcountry.

For the first time in my life, I found myself actively hunting down the piles of skied off fluff on the sides of the trails. Great float (at least in a few inches of light stuff that I could find), great feel. The edges really dug in the couple of times I executed big sweeping carves (though not quite as well as a standard alpine ski). Shockingly responsive for how lightweight they are.

Also, they are bright red, orange, black, and pink. Can't lose! I set up my pair with some bombshells, which match very nicely. Definitely turned some heads in the gondola line!

A lot of binding for small boots

Black Diamond O1 Telemark Ski Binding

Black Diamond O1 Telemark Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 February 10, 2012

I give these bindings 4/5 because even though they don't work for me, they are a nifty (albeit heavy) item.

So, lets preface this with saying that I ride size 21.5 boots - sole length of 277. Had a chance to use the o1's this past weekend (with the short barrels) and while they kept my boots in, I couldn't get them nearly tight enough to feel comfortable getting aggressive. Even with the barrels tightened to their max, on brand new boots, there was a little bit of play in the heel that made me leery. That, and they look really silly on smaller boots. I think there was more binding than boot.

Overall, got the job done skinning up, I do like the ease of adjustment from ski to tour and back, but not suitable for small boots, regardless of what their size chart says. I returned my o1s and bought some Bombshells instead.

I use these for everything from running to hiking to mountaineering to skiing (fits great under a race suit) and even biking (when I need that extra layer). Definitely run a bit on the small side, but you want them to be compressive in fit, so this is alright.

Makes a nice, slightly outdoorsy-looking top for general day to day wear and also works well as intended (baselayer for active use). Went from AR to SL

Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2012

I wore my Beta AR nearly to death over the 5 years that I had it - I still own it, it lives in my closet as a backup - and upgraded on a lark to the SL when I found one for a good deal. The only notable difference, aside from the lighter material, is the absence of pit zips (which I don't really miss, actually, the jacket breathes really well).

I use this shell for everything from biking, to running, to hiking, to mountaineering (took it for its first winter trip this past weekend, it worked as well as my AR even at sub-0F temps), to skiing and everything in between. I was at first concerned that it wouldn't be able to hold up to extremes as well as the AR, but it was great. Not to mention a lot lighter and packs smaller.

The Beta cut is good for those of us who have small/short torsos. Size is true to the rest of the Arc'teryx lineup - fits well over every midlayer I could think of putting under it (in the pic I'm wearing a Gamma MX Hoodie AND Marmot Venus Jacket), but isn't super baggy when worn alone.

Never thought I'd buy this...

Patagonia Tres Down Parka - Women's

Patagonia Tres Down Parka - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2012

Let me preface this review with saying that prior to purchasing this jacket, I didn't own any "nice looking" jackets that were in staid colors. I was the type of gal to show up all dressed up for dates or dinners or what have you with my brightly colored, hip-length outdoorsy jackets, fashion be damned!

Then I saw this jacket, and fell in love; then I tried on this jacket, and became obsessed. I told my mother about it - and she knows I have a serious jacket problem (they just follow me home)- and all my friends. I almost wrote love letters to this jacket I was so infatuated.

I bit the bullet and bought it a week or so later, and am pissed off that it hasn't been colder here in Boston this winter as I really, really could live in it 24/7. The cut is really slim (which is good, as I am usually too small to properly fit XS Patagonia outerwear), and the absence of a bold logo is absolutely fantastic: the only logo is a small "Patagonia" on the cuff of a sleeve in matching thread.

The little features of the jacket really make it worth the money: fleece lined inner-cuffs on the down layer, 2-ended main zipper, a hood big enough to take a ponytail, but not so large as to fit over a helmet, hidden picket on the inside left breast of the down layer...the list goes on and on.

In sum: Looks great, performs even better (damn this jacket is toasty), fits on the slim side (5'3", 32" bust - XS in Forge Gray). Color is slightly darker than in the photo. I am not planning on ever replacing this jacket.

New active winter/fall/spring jacket

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2012

I really like this jacket - it filled a void in my jacket collection that I didn't even know existed: lightweight synthetic partially-insulated jacket. I've been using it while biking (warm even in single digit temps once I got going), as a layer under both hard and softshell jackets (great for skiing, walking around on chilly days), and simply on its own for down-to-40ishF weather.

I really like the fact that it's not fully insulated - makes climate-control while being active a lot easier. The fact that the hood is insulated is awesome, too. Like I said, I never knew I needed a jacket like this, but find that it's now a staple in my (gear) closet. Also, this jacket is absurdly light for how warm it is. The DWR treatment on the outside has kept me dry in several sudden torrential downpours when I didn't have time to put a shell on over it.

Patagonia Capilene 2 Lightweight Zip-Neck Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 7, 2011

Usually I stick with the cap 3 tops because I am cold blooded, but I recently purchased a 2 for fringe seasons (not everything revolves around snow, I know...I know...). Needless to say, it has made me start to rethink my baselayer weight preferences. Lightweight but warm, breathes very well (I was using it as a sun protection layer on a hike last week), and is cut nicely. The baselayers from Patagonia have always fit well (now, if only that were true for the mid layers...)

In sum - great for spring/summer/fall, we'll see how the winter treats me but I have high hopes. Maybe it's time to retire the cap 3?

Really wanted to love this tent

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 August 28, 2011

The weight of this tent as well as the size of it packed up were two big perks of the design (and also the two reasons I purchased it). You really do need to guy it out all the way for max floor space (its only kind of free-standing), and it is spacious enough for a 5'3" camper to feel at home in.

The issues started popping up during foul weather and with a taller hiking partner. It's just too short for someone who is 6'2-3"ish - sleeping bag hits the fabric at the feet and head brushes the top. The single door wasn't an issue, but the lack of a substantial zipper cover (for weight savings, presumably) meant that you couldn't leave it unzipped partially at the top for ventilation (as I can with my other tents), as water would come dripping in.

This tent is so close to perfect, and I really wanted to love it, but just falls short of what I really need out of a tent. (I should just start hiking with shorter people, is the moral of the story). Also, set up in the middle of a downpour isn't as quick as with some other tents. The fact that you have to guy out everything adds a lot of time. All in all, if I could give 4.5 stars, I would, but it falls JUST short of perfection.

Nothing could describe my sadness when my spork was pinched from my place of work (jealous fools!). I have tried several other titanium sporks in the mean time while I find an excuse to order another one - Sea to Summit, REI's TiWare - and no other lives up to the snow peak. The lack of any coating means that food doesn't really stick to it (easier to lick clean), and the shape is exceedingly pleasing both in hand and digging into a pouch of food.

I want my goddamn spork back (it even had my initials crudely carved into it), I guess I should cave and buy another few.

Patagonia Active Boy Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 23, 2011

Bought these when my final pair of hiking undies was eaten by my washing machine (opened the door to a ball of elastic, wasn't pretty). I am usually a size XS, but the S has enough stretch to stay in place no matter what I am doing - I was in a pinch and there weren't any XS available, so I made do - and I haven't had any issues with riding up or bunching. The shorts dry faster than I would have thought possible, and don't smell funky even 4 days in to a summer-weather hike (I was rinsing them out every night).

Overall, super comfortable and good looking. These shorts made me re-evaulate my dislike of the girl short style (most brands just aren't cut for athletic people) and I can safely say I will be picking up another pair soon!

Edit - Jun 2012: still love them, picked up a pair in XS too. Like both sizes!

Stoic Merino Bottom - 3/4-Length - Women's

Stoic Merino Bottom - 3/4-Length - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2011

Fit is superb (true to size and not too tight at the calves, plenty of room for the skiier's/cyclist's badonk and thunder thighs), length is great for ski and mountaineering socks (no more weird layer bunching under boots), and they are warm and soft. Not at all scratchy, merino wool is my new favorite fiber for every piece of clothing.

The length is, as others have mentioned, closer to a 5/8 length (the top of the cuff hits right below my knees), but this is a good thing as they don't really have anywhere to go when I'm being active.

Love them boyshorts

Stoic Merino 200 Boy Boxer - Women's

Stoic Merino 200 Boy Boxer - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2011

I got these in the mail a few days ago - practically ripped the box out of my mailman's hands - and wore them on and off this past week. These suckers are perfect: I have pretty beastly thighs and they don't ride up or fall down. Waist band seemed a bit tight upon first putting them on, but after a day of wearing them, they were great. No wedgie-tastic riding up, nor any weird bunching.

With winter, they have become my go-to undies for skiing, touring, mountaineering, climbing...etc. Basically, when I go outdoors, these are what I wear! Just picked up another pair...

Long story short: shaped for athletic ladies with junk in their trunks. Sizing seems refreshingly true to the chart.

Black Diamond Couloir Harness

August 7, 2011

This harness has a doubled-back buckle at the waist. Doubled-back buckles mean that you cannot accidentally loosen the harness if you hit it weird or fall - you have to manually feed it back through the buckle in order to take it off. Most good climbing harnesses will have that style of closure.

Great work shoe

Merrell Pace Glove Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Merrell Pace Glove Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2011

Due to the nature of my job, I have to wear closed-toe shoes at all times (goodbye, days of lounging around in flip-flops!) These shoes, though, are the answer to all my needs and I was ecstatic when I discovered them:
-Lightweight enough to be a camp shoe - these babies weigh basically nothing (especially in a ladies size 5)
-Sturdy enough to stand up to running, climbing up shelving, and standing (pacing) around in all day

The lack of support meant that my feet were *really* tired the first few days, but after that initial break-in period, I wouldn't go back to trainers or other shoes. They also don't look too goofy, which was my main qualm with VFFs. Highly recommended - Merell shoes in general rarely fit me because I have an extremely high instep, but these babies fit like a glove (ha ha.)

4-way stretch, baby!

Mountain Hardwear Petra Short - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Petra Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 29, 2011

Love these shorts, long enough to wear around work and bike, stretchy enough that I don't have to think about them when climbing or hiking. I love the elastic inside the waist (adjustable with two buttons at the hips. The small zipper pocket is useful for cards, cash, and other small flat things.

Patagonia Bandha Dress - Women's

June 14, 2011

Amaranth is still pretty bright, though not as bright as in the photo. The color is slightly deeper than pink, slightly purpleish, but still certainly a bold shade. If you were going for pale pink, steer clear.

Pretty dress!

Patagonia Bandha Dress - Women's

Patagonia Bandha Dress - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2011

I feel like I give everything I review 5 stars - I've been lucky with my purchases, I guess!

I've been eying this dress for a while now, finally bought it in Amaranth. XS fits me well, despite Patagonia's usually too-large sizing. The length is a very flattering at-the-knee look (where I prefer my skirts and dresses) and the fabric is slinky enough that it hangs very nicely.

Equally as appropriate on a warm summer apres climb as out to dinner. Love the color, too, it is rather bold. Seriously considering picking this up in a few more colors. Just enough stretch to hang perfectly.

All-season staple

Arc'teryx RHO LTW Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 May 2, 2011

Can't beat this hat for mild-to-cold all year weather. This beanie lives in my commuting pack for wear under a bike helmet and fits nicely into the little pouch in my sleeping bag for a little extra warmth at night. Not necessarily the most stylish - unless wearing a dead bird logo can be considered trendy - but warm and amazingly impervious to on-the-trail stink.
Not the hat I use when on the side of a mountain in sub 20F weather (that one's thicker) but it has its uses - I probably used it every other day from late October to March.

Covers the ears well and doesn't itch at all. The seam around the forehead is small and not noticeable at all (and doesn't leave a dorky seam imprint when I've been wearing it for a while).

Great bag

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

Rating for this product: 5 May 2, 2011

I wear this bag every day of the year: snow, sleet, rain, sunshine - you name it! I commute both to class and work with it, carrying anything from a wallet and glasses to a full day's worth of textbooks. Not as comfortable for heavy loads as a regular backpack, but I was looking for a bag small enough to make my carry less. Chock full of features, there are more pockets on this thing than I know what to do with.

The large pocket on the front (behind the three zip pockets...yeah, that's a pocket too) is perfect for my hipster-tastic U-Lock, the gray zipper pouch is where my phone lives, and my bike light lives in one of the internal pockets. Stabalizer strap on size SM keeps the bag on my back (I would have purchased the XS, but it has no strap) and from swinging around - the buckle on the shoulder strap is great for taking off the bag in a hurry when I have a helmet on.

All in all - great for a bag into which you can just stuff random crap that you'd like to stay dry. Perfect for bikers (the loop on the front under where the flap sits is great for a clip-on rear light) and commuters in general - no mega schoolbag tumors on crammed public transit. If mine weren't lasting so well, I'd have a couple, but I don't see myself having to replace it anytime soon!

Arc'teryx Epsilon SV Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

March 14, 2011

I'd say that this jacket is more of a pink/purple than a hot pink. They came out with a few HOT pink items a few seasons ago, but since then it seems that they've muted it a bit. It's certainly a bold color, but not what you're looking for.

Great top

SmartWool Midweight Zip Top - Girls'

SmartWool Midweight Zip Top - Girls'

Rating for this product: 5 March 14, 2011

Not the intended use, but I picked up one of these for myself at a steal. Size M fits my torso and we'll just pretend that the 3/4 length sleeves were intentional.

The shirt itself is great: washes well and holds up to use nicely. I have had no issues with pilling (as I would have expected given that it's wool), and it's super warm. Great for my and for kids - wish I'd had this growing up!

Great baselayer

Arc'teryx Rho LT Zip Neck Top - Women's

Arc'teryx Rho LT Zip Neck Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 14, 2011

This top is awesome. End. Of. Story. Perfect for wearing in the winter on hikes, skiing, running, and anything else you can throw its way (including lounging around the house - it's that comfortable). As has been mentioned, cut is smaller than you'd think given the fit of their other tops (their XS usually run a bit large for me, this fits perfectly), but that is to be expected for a baselayer. Great next-to-skin feel and build construction. Lives up to my expectations of the brand.

Nice and warm

SmartWool PhD Light Ski Sock - Women's

SmartWool PhD Light Ski Sock - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 14, 2011

I practically lived in these socks this winter: skiing, cycling, mountaineering, and just general everyday wear under boots. I really like smartwool - in fact, nearly my entire sock collection is smartwool - and these socks almost entirely lived up to my expectations. The only complaint I have is that they have started to pill quite a bit, more so than any of my other socks by them. Other than that, great socks.

The usual marmot quality

Marmot Venus Down Jacket - Women's

Marmot Venus Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 14, 2011

I feel like a marmot fangirl, but their down really is the best. I bought this jacket in the bright green color (apparently not in stock, will post a picture later) in a size XS. I am 5'3" with a tiny torso, and this jacket fits very well. Like other reviewers, I was looking at the Patagonia Down sweater, but found that in recent years the brand has increased the sizes of their clothes. It has gotten to the point where I can no longer wear Patagonia outerwear because it is cut so large.

I wore this biking on low-teen days this winter, mountaineering around the single-below-zero's, and walking around town in the twenties. As great in the elements as it is in the tent afterward. For an added bonus, behaves very nicely with my marmot sleeping bag.

Packs small (has its own stuff sack in the left breast pocket - cool!) and doesn't weigh too much. I actually like that it isn't super puffy: were it thicker, it would probably be too warm for any strenuous activity and make me look like a Michelin woman (lets face it, looking good on the mountain is important, y'all).

Great lightweight shell

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 14, 2011

I bought this to replace a heavier weight soft shell for weight-saving and utility purposes. I was initially concerned about the lack of pit zips, being a great proponent of them in my other jackets, but I did not miss them after wearing the jacket for the first time. Unzipping the pockets provided enough ventilation.

It layers well with a fleece underneath and hard shell on top, but also performs very well on its own. I have used it running, cycling, mountaineering, and skiing - I would say this jacket shines in high-action activities. It is a bit thin for sitting around on cold days, but is amazingly wind proof for how thin it feels.

I agree with JKC - this does fit a bit longer than the non hooded version (something that seems true across the entire brand).

Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket - Women's

March 9, 2011

The Beta cut is the best that I've found for those who are vertically challenged and moreover petite. I am about 5'3" and wear the XS. It comes down to my hip in a way that doesn't make me look even shorter than I already am or look as though I am floating in it. The Theta is too boxy all over and the Alpha comes down a bit farther than is useful.

At the end of the day, though, Simon is right - more length=more coverage.

Super warm

Black Diamond Absolute Mitten

Black Diamond Absolute Mitten

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2011

I was initially torn between these and the OR Alti's - lack of the ORs in my size led me to purchasing these (in an XS). These things are beastly - the XS is about the size of my torso, no lie. They fit nicely into the nalgene mesh pocket in my pack, though.

Let me tell you, these suckers are WARM. My hands are cold hands and the temperature rating on the packaging (-20 to -40F) does not lie. In close to 0F weather, I ended up hiking about in just the liners (and some other next-to-skin liner gloves) for a time, only donning the outers on my descent when the wind picked up.

Dexterity is as you'd expect for a big pair of mitts: you won't be performing any brain surgery with these things on.

The liner that comes with the glove is insulated, has a pointer-finger lobster (good for grabbing ice axes), and is waterproof enough to roll around in armpit-deep snow for a few hours without soaking through.

The outers are even warmer, and also waterproof. I plan on treating the leather palm as soon as I start to see wear, but that has yet to happen. The insulation continues into the gauntlet, keeping wrists warm. These aren't too difficult to get on, even with stiff fingers.

In closing, I wish that they were bright orange instead of black (partially why I wanted the Altis in the first place - red!) but embodied everything I've come to expect from BD and of a pair of serious mountaineering mitts. Excellent for those brutally cold days, potentially overkill for anything above 15F.

Shiny sabreteeth

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2011

My boyfriend has the older, steel version of these baddies, so of course I had to buy one better when it came time to get my own pair.

The pro-ins adjust well to all sizes of boots, although the toe piece is a bit wide for smaller, ladies sizes. I am on the extreme end of the size spectrum so it's no surprise that it looks a bit sketchy (there's a bit of space laterally at the toe of my boots) - that being said, I used them with no issue all winter. Perhaps it is a side effect of having a high AB plate-to-boot ratio, but I experienced NO snow getting stuck between crampon and boot in all sorts of conditions.

The stainless version, as has been mentioned, is noticeably lighter than the older version, which I appreciated.

Long story short: the BD Sabretooth does not disappoint, works equally well on size 48 (with extender bars, of course) as size 36.

Solid piece of equipment

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2011

I got this axe because I needed one in a pinch and it was the only one available near to my size (I probably need a 55, but ended up with a 60). I wasn't planning on using it all that much, but conditions warranted it being constantly in my hands on a trip to the White Mtns a bit back - the weight wasn't all that noticeable and it worked equally well ascending as for self arresting (oops) and glissading.

I have a bunch of BD gear and each piece is rock solid in its construction and simple. This axe is no exception: no bells and whistles here, just utility.

Bad-ass

Scarpa Mont Blanc GTX Mountaineering Boot - Women's

Scarpa Mont Blanc GTX Mountaineering Boot - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2011

So, I bought these boots because they were the smallest non-plastic moutaineering boots that I could find. That, and let's face it, they're bright green. Having tiny feet and poor circulation, I was naturally worried about two things: sizing, and warmth. Having taken them out on a few occasions now, I feel as though I can comment on them.

Sizing: I have a pair of old Scarpa leather hiking boots, a half size smaller than these - the fit is as I hoped it would be, although I do have to wear an extra pair of socks. The moveable tongue insert thingie really allowed me to make room for my super high arches yet lace the boots tight enough to eliminate heel slippage. Awesome.

Warmth: these baddies are surprisingly warm for leather boots, though the fact that I can actually move around in them probably helps. They play very nicely with my crampons, too, although I might have to bend the front piece a bit to accommodate the narrow toe box. I took them out in 0-30F weather, I'm interested to see how they work in sub-zero temps, though.

Overall: I am extremely pleased with my tiny mountaineering boots.

UPDATE JAN 2012 - wore them in -10F w/ 40MPH winds, still warm as long as I kept moving. Would probably want some double boots for temps much colder than that.

Arc'teryx Covert Cardigan - Women's

Arc'teryx Covert Cardigan - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 15, 2007

Like all of the other reviewers, I found the quality of this fleece to be superb. The cut is a bit different than that of their zip neck Covert - I find that this one fits more like a general (if technical)sweater than a purely technical piece. The extra small is perfect if you're a 32b/34a type. One thing I really appreciate about Arc'teryx in general is that they are good about sizing between their shells and fleeces - the fleece is fitted enough to wear under a shell of the same size with no difficulty. One of the best pieces that I own!
