New Logo Shirt a bit on the Long Side

Backcountry.com Logo T-Shirt - Men's

March 7, 2009

This photo was taken of two of Backcountry.com's Software Engineers. You can see that the shirt on the looker's left is unaltered. The sleeve length and the shirt length are both on the long side. The engineer on the right altered the body length and cut off almost eight inches of length.

5/28/09 - I've since become more familiar with these shirts. The shirt shrinks considerably after the first wash and the sizes become closer to what I'd first expect. After two washes, it's all good.

C&F Design CF-351010 Waterproof Fly Box

Rating for this product: 5 May 23, 2012

This is the best fly box design on the market in my opinion. I have two. The ability to organize your flies in a way that enhances accessibility is awesome. No more foam ripping and tearing and flies falling on the ground or coming loose in the box. The clasp is easy and efficient and you won't take on water with this box design. It's snug and a bug in a rug. Nice work to C&F.

First Endurance EFS Liquid Shot - 6 Pack

First Endurance EFS Liquid Shot - 6 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 May 23, 2012

I went to EFS in an effort to combat cramping during 70.3 races. I wanted my nutrition to have a little more bang for the buck. Overall I feel that it's a tool in the toolbox that's had a positive impact. As I've started to get a handle on cramping I attribute it mostly to controlling fatigue by not going too hard on the bike. However, EFS definitely works well as a sugar replacement for long endurance events. It's easy on the stomach and chalked full of goodness.

Cutter Velodrome Wheel Bag 2.0

Rating for this product: 3 May 23, 2012

I have two of these bags. I keep race wheels in one and I use the other to stow our front wheels when we travel with the bikes on the car rack. Overall, the quality is fine. The padding is adequate for light travel. You can't check this bag but they do well in an overhead compartment. We fly Southwest and the bags always stow well up top. The wheels are lightly padded on the outside for some protection. I like the skewer pockets on the inside. The velcro is pulling away on one of the pockets now. I wish the velcro went further across the pocket as sometimes the skewer can shift and start to peak out.

Orca 226 Tri Tank - Sleeveless - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 24, 2012

Orca makes a great tri jersey. I'm 5'7" and 143 1bs. I used to wrestle and play football so I'm a little more bulky up top than the typical rail of a triathlete. The medium in this cut works best for me. It's nice and snug. The best part about orca jerseys is that they are long. They have great pockets and the length prevents them from creeping upwards and showing off your crack. I highly recommend Orca's jerseys.

T6d is a nice Upgrade to the T6

Suunto t6d Running Pack w/Foot Pod

Rating for this product: 5 July 28, 2010

I recently purchased the Suunto T6d as an upgrade to my T6. I was having trouble with the T6 heart rate readings and I finally gave up. The watch served me well but it was time to move on. I basically beat the crap out of it.

The T6d has improved the UI and usability which is greatly appreciated. The watch is more easily navigated during multisport events and I like that it's now easier to "disconnect" from my heart rate monitor and foot pod when I want to leave training mode. I looked at two other watches when making my decision: Garmin Forerunner® 310XT and the new Forerunner® 405. Ultimately, the T6d won out for a few reasons: 1) as a triathlete I need one unit that does it all. While I can't get HR in the water I'm happy to wear it in knowing it will survive and give me my swim split. The new Forerunner 405 is water resistant but I talked with a Garmin technician that advised me not to wear it in the water. I read multiple posts online deeming this a bad idea as well. The 310XT is waterproof and a solid multisport device. However, it's too damn big. The other nice thing is that it's GPS enabled so I could see just how poorly I swim a line in open water. However, the size is whacked.

The T6d foot pod is quite accurate as I tested in on a track. I calibrated it ever so slightly to hone in on better accuracy. I'm training with this watch and just completed a half ironman with it. I'm stoked on it. I also like movescount which allows you to track and analyze your workouts online. It's a much better solution that Suunto's previous install-based software.

If Garmin's 405 was waterproof then that might have tipped the scales. However, I'm a Suunto guy for this iteration.

This piece of crap could have done some real damage

Serfas Air Pod CO2 Pump

Rating for this product: 1 June 30, 2010

I pulled the truck over this weekend to help a biker fix a flat near Kamas, UT. There was a long chain of events that took place but I'll spare you the details that lead up to what unfolded. In short, we eventually ended up having to use my co2 pump to air up her tire. I've used this pump one time before without any issues. It worked well as expected and I was happy with the result. However, when I went to air up this particular tube the fitting wasn't appropriately attached and air was leaking. So, I reattached it and gave it another shot. I was on the controls and three other bikers were huddled around watching me. It a split second the pump head exploded and shards of the head went flying. We were all wearing sunglasses but one of the observers leg wasn't so lucky. A piece of the pump actually broke the skin on her leg. Maybe I did something wrong? I don't care. This should NEVER happen. A product of this nature should be designed with a factor of safety to prevent this from occurring. Maybe this particular pump was defective? Whatever, get some better quality assurance. I'm thankful noone was truly injured. So much for bike karma.BTW, I recently ordered a CNC-machined, aluminum-bodied Lezyne pump. I'm hoping that these materials will hold up better than the plastic/ceramic/whatever bodied serfas pump.

Smith PIVLock V90 Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2010

I love these glasses. I ride road and tri. I did a 5 hour road ride recently with these glasses and they are extremely comfortable. I didn't have any soreness on the nose or ear contact points. It was like the glasses weren't even there. As an additional comfort test I completed a half Ironman this past weekend and wore them in the bike and run. Yahtzee. These are the most comfortable glasses I've ever worn. I also tested these against other glasses in the aero position during triathlon training and they won out for field of vision. Without a frame I don't have to look up that extra degree or two. Save your neck and buy these glasses. If you've got a Chro-Magnon up top then go with the Max version.

Nuuns laughs in the face of hyponatremia

Nuun Nuun Tube - 8 Pack

Nuun Nuun Tube - 8 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2010

Nuuns is a great way to keep your electrolyte levels up without sucking down unnecessary calories. I've used Nuuns for over a year while training for multiple triathlons and endurance races and have had great results. I've fought cramps my whole life during sporting events and drinking nuuns rather than water before and during events has helped me curtail cramping to a great extent. Additionally, at least one of the ingredients (sodium bicarbonate) neutralizes acids and can have a calming affect on the stomach.

However, there's nothing wrong with a good sugary drink during extensive workouts and competition if your stomach can handle it. In fact, if you don't consume the proper number of calories you you will eventually become glycogen depleted and bonk. So, if you displace your sugary sports drink with Nuuns you should make sure you're getting the necessary number of calories by other means (e.g. Gu gels, hammer, bars, whatever...).

Nuuns is a great tool for your toolbox. Use it. I also encourage you to research and experiment with different types of fuels, amounts, etc for your endurance needs. There's not a one size fits all approach but there are basic guidelines that you can play with to achieve your optimal results.

Good luck!

(BTW, I'm still trying to track this down by the Kona Kola flavor has caffeine. I will update this review when I get the confirmed information.)

Pedro's Super Prestige Floor Pump

Rating for this product: 1 July 9, 2009

It's a throw back to being a kid when we had a crappy floor pump we bought at a garage sale. Except that pump cost me $5 compared to $75. The base is somewhat unstable. It's hard to engage with a presta valve and resulted in my wife breaking at least one off. However, the worst part is that if I go above 110 PSI the air flows back into the pump leaving my tire lacking the air it needs and deserves.

I'm a disorganized person by nature but I strive for organization. These compartments help me fight the good fight and also increase accessibility to particular items of need (e.g., digital camera, snacks, etc). Black Diamond Havoc Ski

Rating for this product: 5 June 3, 2009

I've skied these gloves at the Utah resorts for two years. They've held up nicely and they have a lot of life left.

I love the psuedo-mitten design for warmth and the leather outer is soft, supple and grippy. The first time I put them on I regretted not ditching my old crappers sooner. The full gauntlet keeps the pow out which keeps the gloves try for the most part (except the sweat). Enjoy this glove. Drew Tabke mentioned this were alien like but they look great IMO.

Rating for this product: 5 August 4, 2008

I'm using these with the Life-Link Guide Ultra Light Trekking Poles. It's hard to get fired up about baskets but they do seem to avoid snags which is appreciated.

Cloudveil Beer Label T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 August 4, 2008

I wish there would have been an image of the back of this shirt. I thought I was getting a simple T with the Cloudveil brand but this ended up not being my bag. The back of the shirt has a massive "beer" labelesque Cloudveil deal that didn't work for me.

Hurricane Montrail hits Utah

Montrail Hurricane Ridge XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Hurricane Ridge XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 7, 2008

I owned the hardrock prior to this shoe. These weren't quite as comfy off the bat but they've broken in nicely. I wear these extensively and haven't had any problems with them. I hike the Utah backcountry in them and they do well in all conditions. They are light and well constructed. One complaint is that I can't keep the shoes tied if I ever have to bushwack or go on extended hikes. Maybe that's my problem?

Black Diamond Verdict Ski

March 6, 2008

I've heard that the 2008 Verdict performs a bit better than the 2007 as an all mountain ski. Has anyone skied both models and do you have a perspective on this?

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 4 September 10, 2007

I think the Trail Trekking Poles are a great value. They actually weigh less than some of the more expensive models. I've never really hiked with poles before, and it's been a relief on the knees and makes going down almost bearable.

Under Armour Red Line T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 11, 2007

I wore this shirt during a night relay race and found the reflective properties to fit the bill. I like the material for endurance running as chafing isn't a problem. I also find the shirt to be cool and comfortable.

Under Armour Red Line Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 11, 2007

The inner liner really sets these shorts apart from others. They are very comfortable and chafing is not an issue. My only beef is that the antimicrobial is not so anti-stink. You'll likely be washing these often.

Mountain Hardwear Wicked Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 11, 2007

The comfort level is awesome with this T. It's extremely light and does not intrude. I do agree with another review regarding its durability. If you trail run you're going to snag early and often. If you stay out of the woods then you'll be fine. However, the snags only build character.

Suunto T6 Watch

Suunto T6 Watch

Rating for this product: 4 June 20, 2007

I'm quite pleased with the T6. It's less bulky than the Suunto vector altimeter and you get more functionality. I've found the interface to be user friendly and easy to adjust. If you need a this type of functionality then you won't be disappointed. The software that comes with is decent although I'd love to see Suunto come up with an online application to house my workout data.

Suunto USB Data Snake for T6/T6C/T6D

Suunto USB Data Snake for T6/T6C/T6D

Rating for this product: 4 June 20, 2007

The datasnake is easy to use for the average computer user. If you can upload the pics from your digital camera of choice you can nail this. I did have to download a patch for windows XP from MSFT to get this to work (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448). Suunto has a good FAQ and BBS at www.suunto.com if you have problems.

My only issue lies with the software rather than the datasnake. I'd much rather have a web interface for my workout data rather than having to install software locally.

These are my first pair of climbing shoes and I love'em. They break in nicely so don't be afraid to go down a size to a half size. That was a recommendation from a good friend and I'm glad I took it.

Rating for this product: 3 June 20, 2007

This is a great trail shoe that fits true to size. It's sturdy and I'm really starting to enjoy the Park City trails in them. I'm usually not that concerned about appearance but this time I've got a problem. The Foil Grey and Gunnison Green is a mistake I recommend avoiding.

Thule Velo Vise Bike Mount

Thule Velo Vise Bike Mount

Rating for this product: 2 June 20, 2007

I like the rack but...I find it a pain to have to go wheel off every time but that's the sacrifice for security, right? The problem is that my wife's trek fuel 70 has disk breaks that actually impede a solid connection at the fork. In addition, I had an end cap fall off and I lost the clasp. Not cool.

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 April 30, 2007

I thought climbing shoes were supposed to hurt? I'm a newbie at all this climbing stuff but this shoe definitely rocks. I tried them on at REI for sizing and settled on a size. I spoke with a friend and he said if that I should go a half size lower than I felt comfortable in. I did and after three climbs they've broken in nicely. My wife got the women's version and she's pleased as well.

Thule Hitch Ski Carrier

Thule Hitch Ski Carrier

Rating for this product: 3 December 15, 2006

The carrier is easier to assemble than IKEA furniture. I'm using the Hitch Ski Carrier with the Thule Spare Me Spare Tire Mount on a 1998 Jeep Wrangler. The ski carrier fits snugly on the Mount but is slightly off center. It's not going anywhere but if it fit a bit more flush I'd like it even better.
