Black Diamond Contact Strap Crampon

Rating for this product: 4 February 1, 2012

I have fit these to just about every kind of boot you can imagine: AT boots, XC boots, Mountaineering boots, Duck boots, and they have a perfect fit every time. The only downside is the 10 miles of extra strap that comes on these, but that can be very handy to wrap the two together so I can overlook that.

Rab Latok Alpine Gaiter

Rab Latok Alpine Gaiter

Rating for this product: 3 January 17, 2012

These gaiters are not just another tube of Gor-tex. With a scalloped design these fit to your boots better and with a taper at your ankle you get an all-around great fit! This is the same innovative design used by Black Diamond, but with Mountain Hardware’s stretch panel added into the back. In addition; the extra security of the upper snap and lower Velcro tap guarantee these aren't coming undone halfway up the route. Throw in the inverted laces hook which won't pop off and you are looking at several key features that most of the other leading gaiters don’t have individually, and none have collectively… This is why I bought a pair even though they are about 2 inches shorter than all the other gaiters on the market. The later will be why I will be returning these gaiters. They are great, but have a tendency to end up around your ankles in deep snow because they just don’t reach over my calves enough to stay put.

Rating for this product: 5 June 8, 2011

No extra frills or pockets to weight you down. A medium inseam put these shorts just above your knee, and when combined with a gusseted crouch gives you a full range of motion without the binding up that you might get from a longer pair of knickers. The elastic waist also means you aren’t packing around the belt you used to keep them on for the approach when bouncing from route to route.

La Sportiva Testarossa Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe

March 10, 2011

How the shoe will fit is a much more complicated than how big your foot is or what street shoe size you were. There are several aspects to consider. Your foot shape and your climbing style are two that make a big difference. These shoes are a somewhat sizable investment to be making without doing proper homework, so my suggestion is go to your local shop and try them on. After that, try everything else they have on as well. Unfortunately this will really be the only way you can guarantee a good fit for you.
That being said, here is what I can tell you. In my experience La Sportiva's tend to run slender, I have wide feet with low arches and La Sportiva’s don’t fit me very well. Another very key aspect of this shoe to keep in mind is that though part of the upper is leather, it is backed with a synthetic lining. Meaning the shoe will not stretch like a conventional full leather upper shoe. You mentioned dropping down to a 9 or 9 ½. I would guess this is too small.
My guesstimated size for you would be around a 43. For a more aggressive fit, the toe box of the shoe should be small enough that your toes do not extend out from your foot, but they should not be crushed. Think of the way you curl your toes under before trying to stand on your tippy toes. If the shoe is too tight it may be too painful to put your full weight on your toes, and you won’t be able to wear them for long periods. The shoe will break in some, so a little tightness is ok, but don’t count on them stretching.

Here is the sizing chart from Kahtoola's web site, since BC's didn't show the XL. With your Asolo's a bit on the larger size, being backpacking boots, the large might be a little tight. Depending on what you are doing with them this could be a pro or con. The great thing is BC has unconditional returns, so if you buy one and decide you wish you had picked the larger or smaller after using them for a season or two you can still trade. Assuming you want these for hiking not shoveling your drive way I would say get the L, worst case you have to trade.

I use a Metolius PAS which I hitch to my belay loop, it works great! The hitch should really only pinch the sling if you take an actual fall, one aproaching factor 1 or higher. Horrible horrible guide book!

Book: Rock Climbing Utah

Book: Rock Climbing Utah

Rating for this product: 1 August 12, 2010

First off this book was copy written in 1996 and it is extremely out of date. Second, in an attempt to fit as many climbing areas in one book as they could, they included as little information about each area as possible well still resembling some functionality. They failed! The descriptions are poor at best, requiring you to use obscure markers like signs that no longer exists and a trail with stairs that washed out years ago. There are very few maps and the ones that are included are of whole canyons. The topo’s for climbing areas are hand drawn and that is if there is one at all. I found no use in this book what so ever.
Do yourself a favor, go to sharpendbooks.com, and get the local book for your trip. Yes you will probably have to buy four or five books over the years, but it will save you hours of head ache trying to find routes with this book and then having to go buy the local book to try and save your trip.

Rating for this product: 3 August 12, 2010

I absolutely fell in love when I saw this pack online. ...Then I started looking at the stats, this bag is TINY and so are the lame excuse for pockets and the postage stamp for a tarp. I passed it up and stayed with my trusty Rope Ranger.
Well my friend bought one last week and I had a chance to use it... It was just as god awful as I had feared. This pack is a super cool idea, but it needs to be much bigger, like double...

6/8/11 Ok so I used it again after like a year and actually packed it in a good mile or so approach, and it was wonderful to carry. Put my Rope Ranger to shame in that way, but was still god awful at the crag!

Lafuma Warm 'n Light 1000 Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 August 11, 2010

The bag is warm and super light. I am still amazed how small the down packs every time I pack it into the compression stuff sack and cinch it down. The draft tube and collar keep warm air in and cold air out. The only thing that was a disappointment was I had bought the bag to mate with a Lafuma GR 1400 Lady STM that I had purchased for my girlfriend. Both bags said they were mate-able and all signs pointed to it working until I got the bags in the same room. The zippers were not only not the same length or in the same locations, despite being right and left zip bags both the zip pulls were on the top side of the zipper, meaning they were inverse of one another and not compatible. I still love the bag and am keeping it. My quest for a mate-able set will just have to continue…

La Sportiva Miura Climbing Shoe - Women's Discontinued Rubber

January 29, 2010

It sounds like you like your running shoes a bit big with room for thick socks. I would say you are probably close to 7.5. One thing to remember is that the Muira is made with a leather upper so it WILL stretch. About a half a size is all though, not the 1 1/2 or 2 sizes some of these women are reporting. So here is what you do if you want a good fitting shoe; Go to the store and try them on! There isn't a shoe on earth that will fit everyone the same. Find one that feels like it fits, subtract a 1/2 size and order them from BC. But if for some unforeseen reason you can’t do that, like you live in West Africa or something, a 7 is probably your best bet. One perk of ordering from BC is unconditional returns. So when you get them and work them in a bit. If they aren’t fitting exactly the way you want, you can always send them back no questions asked.

Petzl Spirit Express Quickdraw

January 25, 2010

I personally prefer the 17cm. I own both and enjoy the extra length for building anchors or whatever I find myself needing. I think it is a good middle ground length that can eliminate the need for runners in a slight handful of situations.

On second thought, I recall a number of situations where the top anchors were unevenly set, and one 11cm and one 17cm fit the bill perfectly. So it might be beneficial to have a couple of each.

Petzl Reverso 3 Belay and Rappel Device

January 21, 2010

Reverso3 vs. ATC Guide:
Look closely here at the V notches. This is where the battle over the Guide is won. Notice how the Petzl rounds out at the bottom of the V as to not pinch your rope causing damage when your climber takes a big whipper unlike the BD. Notice the extra engineering put into the raised ridges, BD's are just exactly that, raised ridges, where Petzl's are asymmetrical with a more gradual slope up and a more abrupt shelf to create better stopping power. Petzl's superior design allows them to get a better stop with only two ridges vs. BD's three; that equals less friction on your sheath which equals longer rope life. You can argue all you want about ease of use or parallel belay orientation vs. perpendicular orientation, but that is all a matter of opinion. This is physics, you can’t argue with physics… For more watch this video. (It’s mostly in French, but the captions are in English.)

Scarpa Vision Climbing Shoe -2009

December 31, 2009

These shoes despite being leather will not stretch. Scarpa attaches "anti-stretch panels" to the leather to keep them from stretching. Creating a breathable leather shoe with out of the box fit.

Depending how you like your climbing shoes to fit you might be able to squeeze into a 46, but I would probably recomend finding a shoe that comes in 46.5 of 47.

Sickle Mountain Pant - Men's

Sickle Mountain Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 31, 2009

I've never found a good pair of climbing pants that have that freedom of a large range of motion that look good out side the gym, until now. I love these pants! 98% Organic cotton 2% Lycra so they feel great, look great but totally stretch and don't bind up on you legs and knees. I might just have a new favorite pair of pants. :)

prAna Nemesis Knicker - Men's

prAna Nemesis Knicker - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 30, 2009

My girlfriend got me these for christmas. For some reason she thought I needed Large rather then the Medium I am. So I had to return them and BC is sold out of Mediums. Even though they were entirely to large, I loved these! The fabric is soft and light, doesn't bunch up around your knees. (Even being three inches to long.) The adjustable waist is sweet for under the harness, can't even feel it, but holds them up where you want them well bouldering. I can't wait for BC to get them in stock.

prAna Quest Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

prAna Quest Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 30, 2009

Very light fabric and looks great as you expect from prAna, but it fits loose compared to my other prAna organic cotton shirts and the polyester is itchy. (That might just be me; I've never liked 100% polyester...) Plus I'm a little scared it will end up like all my other polyester shirts before I know it, you know staticy as hell and develops those little lint like balls all over...

Black Diamond Mini Pearabiner Screwgate

December 30, 2009

The "Mini" refers to it being small for a pear shaped biner, according to BD.com it is "Slightly smaller than the RockLock", which is their largest biner. If you are set on a BD try the Positron. http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Black-Diamond-Positron-Screwgate-Carabiner/BLD0556M.html
BC has a unconditional money back guarantee, so even if you buy either one and it doesn't fit, you can send it back no questions asked.

P.S. BC is sold out of the Positron right now, so if you need it now... The quicksilver is more or less the same biner with a hook nose rather than the key.

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

December 30, 2009

I have a 40" chest and the Medium fits like a dream! But I am also 6'1" so I'm a bit taller. The Medium will give you the extra room for laying; the Small might be a bit too tight in the chest with a fleece under it. I guess it kind of depends on how you want the rest of the jacket to fit. You being on the shorter side I wonder if the sleeves length and total jacket length of a Medium might be too much. Not that it is going to drowned you, but half the point of buying an arc'teryx jacket it for that famous fit. Lucky for you BC has an unconditional return policy, so buy the Medium and if at any point you decide it is too big send it back for the small, no questions asked! Another option is trying it on, I always recommend trying things on when in doubt…

Scarpa Booster Climbing Shoe - Vibram XS Grip

December 28, 2009

That all depends on how you want them to fit. The Booster is very asymmetrically designed shoe, it will feel a little tighter for that fact alone. But if you are happy with the way your technos fit and want the same fit but more aggressive, you would probably be safe with a 42. If you aren't happy with the sizing of your technos or don't want these to feel tighter you may want to adjust up or down a half size. But what I would really recommend is going to your local outdoor store and trying them on. Climbing shoes are very tricky; no two shoes will fit the same. Trying them on is the only way to be 100%.

Five Ten Team 5.10 Climbing Shoe

December 22, 2009

The extra rubber on the toe and the texture on the heal would make the Team a much better shoe for hooking. They are both "high" asymmetrical shoes and would probably perform much the same. I would say the Team is what you are looking for.

Five Ten Team 5.10 Climbing Shoe

December 22, 2009

It really depends on how you want them to fit. At a straight across 13 your Defys are probably pretty comfy. Depending on your skill level you may want a tighter fit. The Team is a more aggressively designed shoe to start with so it is going to be tighter in the toe box then your Defys as it is. I would highly recommend finding these in a local store (if you live in salt lake, BC will let you try them on at the warehouse.) and trying them on. No two climbing shoes will fit the same. You really need to try them on!
Something to keep in mind, which you should know from your Defys, the Team is a synthetic shoe. It will not stretch. What you buy is what you get.
On a side note, if performance and fit are not really important to you. You could probably get away with a 13 again, the more asymmetrical shape will give you a tighter feel and it will probably be exactly what you are looking for, something with a monster edge for the jibs and good smearing rubber.

Five Ten Siren Lace-Up Climbing Shoe - Women's

December 21, 2009

I would highly recomend going to your local big box outdoor store and trying these on. I know plenty of climber that like "these" shoes but don't like "those" and others that like "those" but don't like "these" for no reason other then the way they fit. No one shoe is going to fit great for every one. Go to the store, try one lots of shoes if these fit the way you want, come back to bc and buy them.

Arc'teryx Venta AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

December 14, 2009

It really depends on how you carry your weight and how you want it to fit. If you are middle of the road kind of guy the L will probably fit best. If you have a broad chest or are thicker around the middle you might go with XL. What you should do is measure you chest and arms and see where you fit. Also keep in mind Arc'teryx have a slimmer athletic fit, so if you want it to drowned you or need it to fit over any Budweiser tumors you might want to size up.

Rating for this product: 4 November 20, 2009

Do you have little hands? Do you have a hard time one hand opening other quick lock biners, but still want a wide gate and HMS shape? Then this is the biner for you! The only down side is that unlike it's big brother Jake it does not come in key lock gate style. Not that hook and pin are unsafe or anything, they just have a higher chance of catching on stuff. It is still a great biner with a great ergonomic shape and handling.

Mammut Lucido TR1 Headlamp DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2009

By far my favorite lamp and for one reason; this light stands along in my experience as the only light I have use where all the LED’s are lined up to where they all shine on the same spot. You know how other lamp light is just kind of there, and fades around the edges. Not this lamp! All four LED’s project a perfect circle of light where your pointing, which easily explains why it is so much brighter than other light weight lamps like it. I wouldn't use anything else anymore!

I'm not normally a fan of the comic strip T's. Not that I don't get a chuckle out of them. I just normally am laughing more at the idiot wearing the shirt more than the joke. Petzl Spirit Carabiner

November 14, 2009

Anodized is a color set. Anodized strait gate is Orange with a gray gate, where Anodized bent gate is Gray with an orange gate. Aside from my very direct conversation with the backcountry staff, I have also checked other web sites such as, http://www.trails.com/gear/outdoor-gear/carabiners/ and found it to be the same story. Backcountry is creating confusion with the fact that they have no pictures of the Bright color set, found here in the Petzl Spirit Express Quickdraw http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Petzl-Spirit-Express-Quickdraw/PTZ0065M.html, which is the raw aluminum color. Bright straight gate is aluminum with a blueish gray gate and bright bent gate is aluminum with an orange gate.

We quite literally tried on nearly every harness on the market, I believe you need to feel all your options to make a good choice. So going to every store that caries climbing gear on the Wasatch front, both tried on countless harnesses, after making there decisions we came to backcountry and got a good deal. I've even warn this harness once to belay, it is really comfy! I would recommend this to anyone who wants good solid comfort.

Why hang your life on cheap draws???

Petzl Spirit Express Quickdraw

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2009

Yes they are a little pricey, but it is easy to see what you are paying for. First thing that stands out is the beefier sling. More meat doesn't always directly equal more strength, but other thinner slings will twist or swing a lot more making clipping harder, and who wants that? There is also some subconscious reassurance to hanging your life on a little more meat... Next is that huge rubber grommet. Other slings are just tighter on one end, still allowing biners to move somewhat. I’ve gone to clip other draws that will remain nameless and the rope side had been completely turned around well bouncing about as I climbed. If it had happened in a more precarious spot, I might have had a major problem on my hands. With the Spirit Express your biner aint going nowhere, hangs solid EVERY time! Moving on to the carabiners, the first thing you notice is color coded biners. This might not be the most techinacl of selling points, but it might be my personal favoret. One color to the rock, one to the rope, how much easier could it get? These biners also have keylock gates which not only make them basically snag proof for clipping and cleaning, I've been told they are also a safer design then the old pin and hook design still used by “other” companies. The old man at REI might have been pulling my leg trying to make a sale, but it worked. I feel hundreds of times better taking a big wipper on one of these bad boys, than any other draw I have in my arsenal. Bottom line is, this is your life we are talking about. Should you really be ok with cheaper protection??? I say "heck" no!
