2011 experience

2011 experience

Rossignol Experience Magtek Snowboard

December 7, 2011

8 years riding
6'2 175lbs
2011 Rossi Experience 163
Burton diodes
Nike Kaiju boots

Breckenridge CO
34 degrees and sunny .
Nothing open but blue/green groomers(Breck is flat....It's ridiculous. A blue at breck is a green in Utah or Tahoe)

I've owned alot of "big mountain" boards over the years - Rome Design, t6, Billy goat, Jones flagship blah blah.
I learned today that for the most part they are glorified groomer boards for the masses and the Rossi is the first legit Big mountain deck I've been on.

It's a big mountain gun designed by Jeremy Jones for shit-your-pants off piste lines/hike to/ Jackson/snowbird/squaw and rides as one would guess.

The Flex is ridiculously stiff and also stiff torsionally. --- Hello carbon strips from binding to binding.
It makes my Billy goat and t6 feel like noodles.
The stiff flex makes the board a chore to turn even with diodes --- I can't imagine low end mush bindings on this deck.

Unlike my Billy goat which likes to turn, the Experience just wants to track straight and there is no speed limit.
Skiers, boarders, ferraris-- whatever, whoever.

All lost in your vapor trail.

At low speeds the board is lost and really starts to shine when you push it.

It's so damp you can probably run over a small child and not feel it.
Dampening is crazy - I think rossi uses some torsion box tech.. Who knows.

The Rockered nose is softer, but I never felt any floppy chatter that other reviewers had mentioned.
It cleanly tracks over chunder/crud/slop.

It's smooth and fast. You can hit face melting speed with complete confidence on any terrain.

The base is average speed. I waxed it once before taking it out and was pissed because my girlfriend passed me on a Cat Track on her Burton(I'll be waxing again tonight) - IMO Burton bases are extremely fast.

The Mtx is super aggressive - even more aggressive than the early Trice's from a few years ago.
You could probably hold an edge on granite--- Again, you're Jeremy Jones on a 60 degree face, you need your shit to hold.
The downside of this is the mtx is sometimes catchy when trying to rip a long groomer carve.
(I took a pic of the edges)

No problem riding switch either. It's smooth and predicable.
Hit a few rollers and all landings stomped cleanly.

We have no snow here yet, but Imagine it's a powder slayer. Clearly it's not an everyday ride for most.

All in all, it's an amazing board that I'm on the fence as to whether I can bring out it's true potential.

No doubt I'm going to use it on non groomed days I'm riding with skiers, hiking, wide open bowls on the backside of Vail + trips to Snowbird and Jackson later this year.

O'Neill Jones Packable Down Jacket - Men's

O'Neill Jones Packable Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 19, 2012

I had previously been wearing a similar north Face lightweight packable coat as an under layer and had been consistently freezing my ass off.

This coat was purchased to replace it and it's my first O'neill piece.
Like night and day in comparison, this jacket is super warm, light and stylish. I have the blue.

I just wore if for four days at Vail with base layer and shell and was comfortable from 28-5 degrees in storms.

A stylish technical piece that is worth owning.

Quiksilver Cypher Ando Flint Board Short - Men's

Quiksilver Cypher Ando Flint Board Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 2, 2012

I got these shorts in my usual size = 32.

They were too small.

I do own 7 other pairs of Quik Boardies and they are all 32.

These simply run a tad smaller in the waist and are tighter all over.

The shorts themselves look and feel great as the blue color pops(pics don't do justice).

A 33 is on order so I would suggest you order one size up for your usual fit.

PERFECT

Quiksilver Travis Rice Gore-Tex Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 1, 2012

Truly great pants.
I have the bright "multi" printed ones with the parillo art and you pretty much spend the day getting compliments.
A burly but lightweight gore tex material that feels very high quality.
Nice loose fit that's not overly baggy.
Plenty of venting.
What's not mentioned is that these are actually fleece lined so they are warmer than just a shell and they come with a cord in the pockets that allow you to pull up the backs of the pants so you don't ruin them in the parking lot.
GREAT product.

What more to say about this glove, I have used them to DH for 2 years and they still are in great condition.

Taken a few spills with no rips, tears etc...

Super durable.

Burton Diode Re:Flex Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 5 July 27, 2011

I got my hands on these last year at the B sample sale and rode them the last part of the year.

Pros:
- Feather light
- Extremely responsive--- one step above CO2.
- Super comfortable
- Great straps.

Cons:
- Probably too stiff for park
- There is no lean adjustment lever(at least on my sample) - You set the lean with the highback and can't adjust it without adjusting the entire highback.

I don't touch my lean once I get it set, so after a few adjustments in Tahoe, they were dialed and good to go.

The response is ridiculous and the highback is mega stiff( I think it's carbon fiber - FYI, anything with Carbon fiber is cool)

If you want lightweight combined with insane response to carve big lines, this is your binding.

Special Blend Signature Gore-tex Shell Jacket - Men's

Special Blend Signature Gore-tex Shell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 December 21, 2009

Technically this is a great coat.
It fits well, looks great, has every feature that you'd ever need for extreme conditions + it's gore-tex = Bombproof.

However, but as others have said, the zippers are ridiculous.
Its clearly a design flaw was the main zip and also the pocket zipper get caught/stuck in the fabric 90% of the time you zip it up. This may sound like nit-picking but its almost imposible to get the coat to cleanly zip up or down without the fabric catching.
This weekend I had to have my girlfriend help me get the fabric out of the teeth as the zip was stuck near my chin.
I love Special blend stuff, but this is an EPIC FAIL!!
NOT a good design.

Burton Grail Snowboard Boot - Men's - 09/10

Burton Grail Snowboard Boot - Men's - 09/10

Rating for this product: 5 November 25, 2009

So it was time to get some new boots this year as my 2nd set of Ions had packed out and at this point were way to big for me. I tried on DC, Salomon,k2, Ride and pretty much every boot in the store(I wanted to try something non burton)... Tried on this boot. Sold. Ridiculous. Unbelievable Comfort. It has a Nike-looking air sole and it honestly feels like a high end basketball/workout shoe due to the incredible amount of cushioning in the heel. Burtons new imprint 3 liner is also the real deal. On top of that it's low-profile for those of us with large feet. I have a narrow foot and ended up sizing down a size and a half in the grail as the shop heet molded me with a toe cup. I rode the boot today and it's CUSH. It's labeled as a freestyle boot, and has a burton flex rating of 6 which is mid-stiff. Plenty responsive but comfortable as it has an articulating cuff that helps with presses etc. I was expecting some pain today as I bought the boot a little small, but there really was none. Even going from Speed laces to the normal lacing on the grail was flawless with zero adjustments throughtout the day. Heel-hold was excellent with zero heel-lift without j-bars. Much more comfortable than my Ions. This is an almost perfect all mountain boot that has the comfort of an athletic shoe. A slayer in any situation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I'm grabbing a second pair in purple as soon as they go on sale.

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

Terrain Use: Backcountry, Groomers, All Mountain
Good For: Spring Day, Blue Bird Powder Day, Cloudy and Cold, Cold and Blustery Day, Storming and White Out
Pros: Durable, Lightweight
Other Thoughts: A Sick 2 layer coat made of the same burly material that the perimeter pants are made of. Sierra say 5k/5k, the coat is ACTUALLY 10k/5k(tags with the coat)-so it's quality stuff.. Very simple jacket this is JET black, with a sweet inner print. Only issue it, it runs VERY big...I usually wear an Xl and it was like a dress. Ended up with L and it fits much better. Freeride Demon

Burton Supermodel X Snowboard

Burton Supermodel X Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

I grabbed the 164 on a whim a week ago in Tahoe to replace a board I destroyed.

This nasty stick is freeride demon. Simple, clean graphics with a carbon black look that has a sparkling/pattern/ shine to it---sick.. Large nose with 10mm taper(It's basically A Custom X with taper) and setback stance allows the board to sail over crud/chop etc. . (It's the only board in the 2009 lineup that features the Powder fly 3 core which is lighter in the nose allowing the board to slay pow) Slight adjustments need to be made when landing jumps due to short tail, but once I figured it out, I landed everything and it was not an issue.

Pretty stiff, but not quite as stiff as my t6, As you might expect, it takes some effort to Ollie, but it snaps in and out of turns nicely. It's a wider board(I think it's a midwide), so it's average edge to edge, but you can crank it up to face-melting speed with zero chatter. It's stable and the Stainless steel PDE edges make it a carving machine. As with most high-end Burtons, the new N2O vision base is fast as I blew by almost everyone all day, but I never got to see it's full potential as I was stuck riding with the lame factory wax. I imagine it's as fast as my t6, But I can't call it the drag race winner till I get to hand-wax it.

The board is also surprisingly lightweight(even at 164)due to the Carbon Vaporskin topsheet., Powder Fly 3 core etc. The Super X basically has almost every piece of Burton tech thrown into it and it rides like a Ferrari-fast, light and stable.. Burtons High-end decks(t6, CX, Super X) are LIGHT-years ahead of the low-end models in performance.

This a great board for the advanced riders who rip Big-mountains(Vail/Squaw/Jackson Hole)--wide open bowls/steeps/powder

This is a great all-mountain boot. Medium flex and stiffness. Cush lining. Embedded J-bars that eliminate heel lift. I have a narrow foot and thin ankles, and these fit perfect. I got them heat-molded at Vail and the break in period was 3 runs. Easy and fast adjustments with one or 2 cranks of the boa system. No pressure points whatsoever. I went from Burton Ions to these and I can say the Boa system is quicker and more effective. A SICK boot. RIDE's top of the line boot at an incredible price. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Burton T6 Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2008

I own an 08' 162.... I also own a rome, palmer, lib and a burton malolo.

This is the fastest of the bunch by far...

The Ride/stiffness is similar to a Custom x with a slightly different "feel" due to the alumafly core..

Very underated as an everyday board,, Not as stiff or as hard to ride as most think..VERY precise...Flies great, very light.. Great edge hold on ice, zero chatter straightlining at high speeds...IMPOSSIBLE for anyone on any board to keep up with you in the flats..

NOT for park rats, gapers, noobs and weekend heroes..It will slam you if you don't know what you're doing..

Board looks brand new and the base is in great shape, this includes days in Colorado, Tahoe, wisonsin and pennsylavania...
IMO-- Burtons best board..

Lib Technologies Travis Magnetraction Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 February 27, 2008

Mid-flex,,,,soft enough for park, yet stiff enough for bombing/wide open bowls.

Insane POP-on carves and natural hits.

Very easy/fun board to ride.

Holds and edge at speed with Minimal chatter(Paired with Burton P1's/Ions)

I've ridden my 161.5 in deep pow at Beaver Creek, CO,,, WIde open Siberia Bowl at Vail, CO and in an Icy hell at Cascade, WI...

This stick can handle ANY condition and it absolutely DESTROYS Ice/hardpack..

Lib is onto something here with their tech...
Magnetraction works and then some.. This would be the perfect deck for East Coast/Midwest riders who generally ride in ice/slop/crud.

Only issue with this board,, The base came in SUPER dry..I suggest waxing it NUMEROUS times before headind out..--It's improved in speed drastically from when I first rode it with CONSTANT waxing.

Other than that, It's an absolute amazing board....

Cons: The FLAD(Forward lean) adjustor is is Very difficult to adjust..Most of the other Burton bindings now have the new Quick flad which is much easier to use.

Burton AK 11L Pack

Burton AK 11L Pack

Rating for this product: 5 October 30, 2007

This Burton AK Pack is the perfect lightweight pack for a day on the mountain. It's low-profile, yet large enough to carry goggles, hydration pack, extra layer, food, and then lash your stick on the back ... it also has a survival whistle built into the straps in case you get lost.

I got the 11L because it's large enough to carry everything I need for the day, but not big enough that I have to be the packhorse for all my friends' gear!!

Burton Team Skyback II

Rating for this product: 5 September 17, 2007

I just picked up this Skyback 2 to put on last years Cartel ..It's a PERFECT fit, is anatomically correct with the canted back, and has the new lean adjustment know to quickly control your forward lean..This means improved comfort!(last years cartels were uncomfortable for many) I also put both Skybacks on a scale and the Sky 2 is a few ounces lighter...

Palmer Honeycircle II Snowboard

Palmer Honeycircle II Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 January 12, 2007

I have the Honeycircle 2 in 161...Just RIPPED Vail, Keystone and Copper...This board performed well in ALL conditions..I'm larger rider 6'1" 200lb and this board was the PERFECT size..
Vail was INSANE powder...this board handled the backcountry in 3 feet of powder in the Wildwood bowl..no problem...weight of kept it floating all day..
next day, was icy at keystone.. Board is very stable and easy to make adjustments even at high speeds. Very forgiving and difficult to lose control on...Copper was the same deal....Best board i've ever rode..able to handle, powder, ice, backcountry...pretty much whatever you throw at it..
Good ridin' all.
