I only write reviews when the item is worth reviewing. This Surge pack is absolutely worth reviewing. My background is that I am contractor in Iraq who frequently travels for a few days at a time. I need a small, light bag capable of holding a few days worth of clothes, hygiene, paperwork and small electronics. Im a bit of a gear junkie and have been through multiple bags just to check them out. So far, this one takes top honors.
The bag has many pockets on the interior, both zippered and not. In some I carry business cards, in others I carry small first aid items like bandaids, neosporin and chap stick. Dedicated pockets hold my HP Mini netbook and power supply, iPhone and external hard drives. In one pocket a keychain lanyard with clip is attached. Pen holders are also inside this pack. The main compartment is large enough for me to fit 4 pairs of thin hiking pants, 4 shirts, undergarments and hygiene. One review below me did mention the limited zip of the main compartment and I agree. The zipper goes about halfway down the side, so reaching items at the bottom almost requires emptying items at the top (depending on how tight you packed). Behind the main compartment, and resting against the back pads, is yet another zip that keeps an office manila folder with paperwork perfectly flat. And on the bottom of the pack is yet another zippered pouch that runs flat along the underside. I use this for loose change, trash (Im environtment friendly!). Two side pockets are meant for hydration bottles but I use mine for shower sandals. A single compression loop is given on the bottom of the pack which I rigged with a football sized stuff sack containing my sleeping bag. I hop on the helo and Im not taking up much room, but am able to carry all I need for a multiple day trip.
Bottom line: 5 exterior zippered compartments+multiple interior pockets+light/small=EXCELLENT carry on/short travel/day pack. Thanks North Face!
