GTX version not as comfortable as non-GTX

Salomon XT Wings 2 GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XT Wings 2 GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 13, 2012

I have had the non-GTX version of the shoe for a few years now and love them. They are super comfortable and I have never gotten a blister. I use the shoes for a bit of running but mostly as light hikers for long day hikes. I was ready to give the shoes a try for backpacking and wanted the GTX version to handle the typical spring and summer conditions in the Sierra (stream crossings, lingers snow fields, etc). I slipped the GTX Wings on when they arrived and immediately knew they wouldn't work. They weren't bad but I was looking for the same fit/comfort as the non-GTX wings. These seems stiffer overall and even slightly wider in the forefoot. I wasn't willing to chance a break-in. If they don't feel good right away it's a no-go for me. These are still fairly comfortable shoes, just not as plush as the non-GTX version. Bummer.

Sweet Jersey

Oakley Retro Fade Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Oakley Retro Fade Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 10, 2011

Looks sweet, good ventilation, great fit. It's not too baggy and definitely not tight. Just perfectly loose for your riding comfort. Have ridden in this jersey between 60-85 degrees and been plenty comfortable. Despite the description there is no zipper on this jersey. One feature I never thought much of was the integrated sunglass cloth, that was until I needed one on the trail. It's a nice little addition to this cool jersey. I would buy another one but they are all out of larges in the colors I want.

Great in the cold; Not so good in the wind

Snow Peak GigaPower Stove Auto Ignition

Snow Peak GigaPower Stove Auto Ignition

Rating for this product: 2 May 29, 2007

I purchased this little stove after reading so many great reviews. Then I took it on a backpacking trip and quickly discovered this stove totally sucks in the wind. We had a light consistent wind (prob 7-10 mph) and the stove just didn't like it. It kept blowing out. At least the Piezo igniter got things going quickly again but without a windscreen be prepared to be frustrated in any wind over 5mph. This stove did light up quickly in the morning at 25 F though even after leaving the canister out all night.
