October 23, 2009

I have this pack, I'm just not sure on how to attach the shovel to it. The description says "external shovel pocket". Which pocket is that?

Columbia Snow King Cargo Pant - Men's

November 17, 2008

If you're gonna be using the pants for a limited time and don't need hard-core ski level performance out of them, I'd go with insulated pants. However, if there's gonna be alot of farting around, i'd definitely go for with something with vents :P

Sigg Lifestyle Water Bottle - Screw Top - 1.0L

Sigg Lifestyle Water Bottle - Screw Top - 1.0L

Rating for this product: 3 November 10, 2008

Aircraft grade aluminum is really thin. I've dented two of these bottles, one of them to the point of unusability. I'm used to Nalgenes, but these seemed really fragile and dentable to me. The 2nd bottle dented just from being dropped onto the floor of the shelter.

Quality Gruppo

Shimano Ultegra SL RD-6600-G Rear Derailleur

Shimano Ultegra SL RD-6600-G Rear Derailleur

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2008

The Ultegra SL gruppo runs true to it's billing. It delivers Dura-Ace shifting (snappy, accurate shifting) without paying the huge price for the dura-ace label. Especially with the weight loss present in the SL gruppo, these parts are definitely worth the money. My RD is still shifting accurately as ever after many thousands of miles in horrible conditions.

Great Lightweight Mountaineering Axe

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 5 April 16, 2008

I've used this axe several times this winter on Mt. Washington and it's great. The axe is lightweight, yet sturdy enough that it doesn't feel chintzy. I can confidently say this axe is a great buy for the money. Chopping a seat into bulletproof snow in Tuckerman Ravine was easy, and self-arresting a slide on the Lion Head Winter Route worked as advertised.

Sturdy Crampons

Petzl Vasak 12-Point Mountaineering Crampon

Petzl Vasak 12-Point Mountaineering Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 April 16, 2008

These 'pons are exactly as advertised. A light-ish strap crampons perfect for mountaineering, or just hiking up a slushy trail. I would not recommend them for ice climbing, or anything that requires serious front-pointing, as they are not designed for use with plastic boots. If you want serious ice-climbing performance, buy something else. But if you want a light pair of crampons which will add a much-needed sense of safety while ascending steep or slippery slopes, the Vasaks are perfect.

Columbia River Runner Pant - Men's

Columbia River Runner Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 30, 2007

These pants run a little short of the marked size, but they're great. They dry quickly and fit well, other than the length issue.
