Orage Lenny Softshell Jacket - Men's

Orage Lenny Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 February 17, 2012

Size down: Unfortunately its to late, as they are all out of smaller sizes. I ordered a medium as suggested by their size chart, also because thats all ive ever purchased in the last 15 years, Medium in everything. I ordered my medium Lenny and was pretty excited to try it on. Its freakin huge. Sleeves go right to my finger tips, and i can easily put on my 800fill marmot mountain down, under it. More and more "outdoor" companies seem to be catering towards the general, every growing, american public; instead of their long loyal outdoor enthusiast consumers. I can no longer comfortably fit into the now boxy Marmot, OR, TNF, MH, etc. Its frustrating. Sorry, venting. Im 5'10" ~155lbs

Otherwise it seems like itd be a great softshell, especially for the current sub $100 price tag.

Extremely disappointing

Stoic Bombshell Insulated Jacket - Men's

Stoic Bombshell Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 November 30, 2011

I ordered this jacket and received it today and could not be more disappointed. I have the Stoic Bombshell Insulated Jacket from a previous year, and i love it, best jacket Ive ever owned. I have a medium and it fits like a glove, at my waist and perfect athletic (tight) fit. I ordered the Deep color this year, in medium, and Im swimming in the damn thing. Its goes below the bottom of the zipper on my jeans, the sleeves go past my fingertips, and i could easily wear my 800fill down Marmot under it! Easily! Not to mention on the site it appears that its a dark blue, when in fact it is closer to a teal, in fact its no where near the blue that i see on the site. Extremely Frustrating. I am returning immediately, this makes me not want to ever order another stoic product. Who changes their sizes so dramatically from year to year on the exact same model!?! I cannot express how disappointed I am. If you are looking for a snowboarder type fit, ie baggy, itd be good, but if you want a piece of athletic outdoor gear, this is not for you. FYI Im about 5'10 150lbs.

i suppose i should add that, as always, this piece of stoic clothing was very well made. I love the insulation as well as the shell.

Primus EasyLight Lantern with Piezo Ignition

February 21, 2009

I do not own it..but from what I have read here, and elsewhere..it is a mantle-less lantern. I was wrong. I just watched a video showing the replacement of them. I thought they were mantless lanterns, but unfortunately not.######################Actually it does have a mantle, if you check out www.primuscamping.com you can buy them there. Its not a stiff mantle, you pre-burn them just like you would with a Colman.

The North Face Dome 5 Tent 5-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

First off, I do NOT own this tent, and I would not normally review something I do not own, but I am finding myself compelled to rate this 5 stars, just to offset the above review of 'mis2478456'. This tent is in NO WAY a 'rip off'. Expensive? Yes, it is. Worth it? Every penny! If you are going above, oh say, 6,000 meters, or above 50 degrees N or below 50 degrees S latitude, especially for an extended period of time, or for a base camp, then you are going to thank (your)God that you inside this tent or one similar. If we are ever on the same mountain together, and you are in your $379 bargain 4-season tent, don't come knocking at my door!

Coleman Pinnacle Lantern

Coleman Pinnacle Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

This is a fantastic lantern. I grew up with the classic Coleman Kerosene Lanterns. This is such a great alternative to the old Colemans. I expected this lantern to by much much smaller than it is, its the same size as the classic Kerosene lanterns. The fact that it packs into itself is great, it doesn't make it a good size for backpacking, but its nice to protect the globe while transporting it. The Instastart feature is great, works instantly every time. Another great feature are the Insta-Clip #95 Tube Mantles, they are sooo easy to install compared to the old ones where you have to tie them on by hand. So if you are looking for a lantern for backpacking, keep looking, but for around camp, or to keep in the truck, this is the one for you.

Sigg Lifestyle Water Bottle - Screw Top - 1.0L

January 5, 2009

I own a few Sigg water bottles and I personally think there is no reason to buy any other brand, they are perfect. You rarely see a bad review for Sigg, and after only a minute of looking I see multiple people unsatisfied with their Gaiam bottles, mostly dealing with difficulty with cap, and leaking. Gaiam makes so many different products, unlike Sigg, who specializes in this field. Not to mention that Sigg has many different designs to best suit your style and personality. Spends the few extra dollars, and buy quality.

Suunto Core Altimeter Watch

December 22, 2008

Suunto watches are made for outdoors and rugged weather. I would say the plastic band would hold up beautifully in the shower, ocean and while working out. As for the scratch resistant face, I would say no, from what I read it is Mineral crystal glass which isn't the best at resisting scratches. Might I add this is a nice watch, if I had the cash to spare I'd be all over it! May I recommend which I would get. On Suuntos site they say you can make your own "Military' version, I think it would look best of any of the above, here's what they say...."Core Military Edition? Despite what you may have heard, be aware that there is no factory-produced 'Military' version of the Suunto Core. You can, however, create your own 'Military' Core! Here's how: What you'll need: * One Suunto Black-Orange Core wristop * One Flat Black Elastomer Suunto Core Accessory Strap with LugsHow to do it: 1. Remove the orange strap from the Core watch 2. Replace the silver 'pins' in the Flat Black Accessory Strap with the black ones from the orange strap 3. Install the black strap (with black pins) on the Core body 4. Sit back and savor the stealth "This is what it would look like.http://www.suuntowatches.com/assets/product_images/alternate/300/102493CALLBLACK-1.jpgSorry if I overdid the answer.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Merrell Essex Down Jacket - Women's

Merrell Essex Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 22, 2008

Like you "Nate Dawg" I got this jacket for my girlfriend for Xmas, I have a great down coat(Marmot Mountain, 650 fill). With her non-down coat, shes always cold, and we live in some pretty harsh temperatures(its 3pm and 3F right now, with a -15F windchill factor). I too was planning on waiting until Xmas to give it to her, but her jacket just doesn't cut in, even when its above freezing! So it came in the mail today, and as did you, I thought it seemed WAY to thin, and I was a little bummed out. So I decided to give it to her, to test in these temperatures and see if we should return it.. she LOVES it! She says the sizing is perfect and it kept her warm, she took our dog for a half hour walk with just a T-shirt under the Essex, she said "my ears were FREEZING, but the coat was really warm, really hot!" Adding that she was glad that it wasn't 'really puffy'. So "Nate Dawg", before you return it, make sure you let her try it on! We all know down compacts well, they must have stuffed it in there good, because it seems to get the job done with a thin profile and a low weight in below freezing temperatures. Hope this helps anyone considering this purchase.

Tubbs Couloir Series Snowshoe - Women's DO NOT USE

December 19, 2008

That's really unfortunate Carol, I can definitely see how that could get annoying day in and day out! I don't know how much help I'm going to be, but I will try! I hope these are the type of bindings you have, because there are many different types made by Tubbs alone. The first thing that should go without saying is just pull the backstrap as tight as you can get it! The only thing I can think of doing, if the snowshoes themselves are failing you, is to fix it yourself, and what I mean is take a shoelace or small piece of rope, and tie a Larks Head knot around the backstrap(http://www.geospectra.net/kite/knots/knot09.jpg) and then take the ends and bring them around to the front of your boot(or even rap them around a few times) and tie them in the front. Might not be pretty, and may be a pain, but it should help keep it up during your hike. I hope you figure something out, best of luck!

From what i can tell, not a whole tell of a lot considering its $30 more. Tjere are only two differences U can find from comparing the two is that the Greenwich has a felt The North Face logo, and the Half Dome(which is no longer for sale on backcountry) is screen printed. The other is it says the cuff of the Greenwich is '3x3 rib at cuffs and hem' while the Half Dome is 1x1, whatever that means. I prefer it over the Nalgene. Not really sure why, just personal preference. I like the shape, the color, and the cap more, plus everyone has a Nalgene, its a nice change of pace.

Marmot Mountain Down Jacket - Men's

December 16, 2008

I would say go Large. As I said down below I am about 5'11, 175lbs myself, and medium is plenty comfortable for me. If you are above a 36 inch waist, or a 42 in chest, I would probably go with a large. Hope that helps.I am judging this on 5 Marmot coats I own. One being last years model of the Marmot Mountain Down Jacket.

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

Rating for this product: 4 December 16, 2008

The bad reviewers mostly are saying how good it worked at first, how fast and effective it is. But then say the next day how slow it is..I wonder if they read the directions or if theirs really were defective. This small filter is suppose to be 'back flushed' every 8 liters, that's very often, especially these people saying they used it for groups or 3-12. this shows how to do it, for those you already own and haven't read the directions properly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUBZTfPUDP8

for those whose really 'sucks' that's a bummer.

For only 6 dollars, dont pass it up. Easy to install, the 90 degree angle from the hose makes for easier drinking IMO, no reason to not get one.

A Tried and Tested Filter, I don't know what more to say! Ive used quite a few different Filters, a older generation of this one was my first. They pump fast enough, and seem almost indestructible! Need very little maintenance. If you want one you know will last just about forever, you cant go wrong.

CamelBak Thermal Control Kit

CamelBak Thermal Control Kit

Rating for this product: 3 December 16, 2008

We all know in the below freezing temperatures it is almost impossible to keep that line from freezing, this will definitely help, but not stop the inevitable. While a bit pricey for something so simple, if you have the extra $15 and want a little help in the winter, get it. Otherwise blowing into the bite valve until the water in the tube is all resting in the Camelbak reservoir, works equally as well..and its free.

What Camelbak doesn't come with a bite valve these days? but if your reservoir is still in good shape, and your bite valve isn't, its better then buying it all, all over again. If you need a new one, its worth every penny.

Marmot Mountain Down Jacket - Men's

December 9, 2008

DakkaGuru - Weighs 2.45 lbs. No stuff sack but bag can compress to a decent size to fit in your pack. Dustin- It doesnt say anything about a stuff sack on backcountry or marmot.com, but neither did last years Marmot Mountain, but it DID come with one. I would say yes, but I could be wrong.

Marmot Mountain Down Jacket - Men's

December 9, 2008

Jeff - I'd order the large size mainly for what you're wearing underneath. What you don't need is a constricting outer down jacket..Dustin- Id have to disagree, I am the same size as you JK, and I own last years Marmot Mountain, and I would suggest a Medium, as it is what I own. I live in cold temperatures, easily 10 below throughout the winter, and rarely have to layer, its seriously that warm. But when layering is a factor, this jacket has plenty of room for multiple layers, a medium is not small by any means. Hope this helps.

Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket - Men's

December 9, 2008

agreed, not going to happen...I do own the Marmot Mountain Down Jacket, still available on some sites. It has some serious warm, as well as a massive hood, you could probably fit a helmet underneath. Also it has the added feature of the reinforced shoulders and elbows via canvas type material. Hope that helps.

Katadyn Vario Ceramic Disc

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2008

Well if you already have the Katadyn and need a replacement ceramic filter, there you go. Ive never had problems with my getting 'gunked up', since the pre-filter on the end of the inlet tube usually helps keep most of it out, but the ceramic disc is great for murky water non-the-less.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 8, 2008

I own 6 Marmot jackets, none disappoint, and this one is no different. I have the Hedge color, and its a great deep green, it looks great! The large pockets and great hood are also spot on. The waterproof and windproof factor are not lacking in the least. The pit zips are huge, and the large front pockets are mesh inside, so they work as ventilation as well! Great Jacket!

Nalgene Tritan Wide Mouth BPA-Free Bottle - 32oz

Nalgene Tritan Wide Mouth BPA-Free Bottle - 32oz

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I never have had a Nalgene, i always perfered steel or aluminum bottles, but I added this to my order to boost myself to free shipping. Very glad I did. Extremely lightweight, durable, and does a good job of not holding smells(as long as you wash it after use). Being this is my first one, and its a BPA free, im glad i waited so long. The blue looks really good, i like the measurements on the side(which i never got with my metal bottles), and carries enough water for me and the dog for a good length hike. Highly recommended.

GSI Outdoors Piranha Foon

GSI Outdoors Piranha Foon

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

Who ever thought you could get excited about a spoon, fork, spork, or a foon?? Well I didn't, until I received the Piranha. My girlfriend got annoyed when I tried to show it to her, she didn't seem to be able to its beautiful simplicity as I do. The foon is surprisingly lightweight and durable. The clip is nice, as well as the very left and right prongs are shaped like barbs on a fishhook, even grabs onto a piece of steak with ease! The best part is it being made of the Halulite which does not conduct heat, so no worries of burning your mouth after being in a hot soup like with your metal utensils. For under 2 bucks its a steal!

CamelBak Better Bottle w/ Classic Cap - .75L

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I love the top in comparison to Nalgenes, east to hold, easy to open. I got the pink for my girlfriend in order to qualify for the free shipping, it was a good choice. She loves it and takes it to class and work with her everyday. It was small enough to fit in her bag(big purse), but give her enough liquid for the day. We had no problem with ours. Highly recommended if you aren't in the market for a large bottle.

Backcountry.com Goat Wool Flexfit Hat

Backcountry.com Goat Wool Flexfit Hat

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I own my fair share of BCs Goat logoed products. This has is probably my favorite of the lot. The hat hits like a charm( its a S-M, my head has approximately a 23" circumference). The length and stiffness of brim is perfect. The depth of the hat is also just right, and the look and feel of the material couldn't be better. It looks cool, I've had more complements than I can count. I have the Brown, hopefully they replenish the color supply, I'll want another when this one, if ever, craps out on me.

Rating for this product: 4 November 7, 2008

This shirt is one of my favorite, the material is soft, and thin, great for summer. The I have the Brown with Blue goat, looks great. Only complaint, as with most BC shirts, the necks stretch real easy, and stay that way, which I'snt a problem unless you prefer a tight fitting neck, as I do.

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Katadyn Vario Dual Technology MicroFilter

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I bought this just to add to my collection of outdoor gadgets, and didn't get around to using it right away. I've used many others by friends, mostly the 'Katadyn Hiker' model of filters, usually on week+ camping/hiking trips. This one blows it out of the water when it comes to GPM and ease of pumping, along with the ease of connecting it to water bottles; specifically Nalgenes, and Camelbaks. The ceramic filter is great to extend the life of the glassfiber/carbon filter. I highly reccomend this filter!

MSR WhisperLite Stove

MSR WhisperLite Stove

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I've had mine since me and a highschool buddy when to Isle Royale National Park in the middle of Lake Superior back in 2001 for a 11 day trek of the Island. it worked like a charm the whole time, and to this day I have yet to clean, or do any maintenance to it, and it still works like the first day I got it. If only everything else in the world could be made so perfectly. Folds up nice, and stores in carrying case for minimal space and weight. The only thing different, is i have the pre-filled canister bottle version(which we didnt even use up 2 for both our meals, 3 times a day for the 11 day trip), and mine came with a Heat Reflectors, which BC states this one does not? Im sure its not to different.

Rating for this product: 3 March 16, 2007

I never thought id think that of a skate shoe. i have owned nothing but skate shoes for at least 10 years now, and have yet to ever have a problem with a single shoe. I do have somewhat wide feet, but nothing crazy. i bought 11 1/2s, and it was unbelievable how tight the toe section was! i had other friends try them also, they agreed. it took me easily a week to make it withstandable, and after a month they are still tight. and i have two pairs, they are both that way. if you are going to buy them, definitely make sure you are able to try them on first. Globes first disappointment for me
