Montrail Excelerace XCR Hiking Boot - Mens

Rating for this product: 4 October 14, 2003

I have found Montrail shoes to fit and perform best, so I had to try the excelerace. These shoes fit more snug than other models because the toe box is smaller, so you may want to order a half size up. The plus side of a snug fit is stability while going downhill i.e. your feet don't slip in the shoe. Out of the box, I have done two 9 mile hikes in the Smokey Mountains with these shoes and they feel great. They are very light and keep your feet feeling fresh. The traction is adequate, but not good on wet rocks and scree. Too warm to wear on hot days - save for cooler or rainy days and hikes a little less rocky. These have potential to be my favorite shoe! But for rocky hikes or backpacking I'll grab my Montrail TRS Comps. I ordered my "usual" size and they are hard to get on. If they stretch a bit my rating will go to 5.
