Stoic Bombshell Insulated Ski Pant - Women's

Stoic Bombshell Insulated Ski Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 April 22, 2011

I bought these when there was a purple version available, and I should note that perhaps this year's version has been modified from the one I bought sometime last year. I loved that the fit wasn't baggy like most - they really are adorable and flattering. I wear a size Small in these even though I wear XS in North Face. However, the quality just wasn't what I needed. I do wildlife research and spend long days in the field showshoeing into a site with a packframe of metal traps on my back and riding (and digging out) snowmobiles, so keep in mind that these might be fine for someone for light recreational use. My gripes are:

1) THEY DON'T STAY ON! Seriously. There is a snap closure on the fly, and it kept coming undone...constantly. I never could figure out why, but I'm a supervisor and can't really be flashing my crew. These are the primary reason I stopped wearing the pants.

2) The shell fabric is too delicate. It tore within the first few uses when I brushed against the back of a pickup. I own a pair of TNF Freedom Insulated Bootcut pants (which are slightly baggier, even a size down) and ended up wearing them every day instead of these because they held up to all sorts of abuse.

3) The material is a little weird when it gets wet. I found that I would slide back on the snowmobile seat a lot when I wore these in 20F+ temps. They are slick when wet, and the outer material seems to slide separately from the insulating material. But this is less of a concern than the aforementioned reasons.

I loved the look of these much better than my North Face pants, but they are just not made well. It's kinda hard to do anything in the snow if your pants keep falling down!

Contourwear Wrap Tank Dress - Women's

November 28, 2009

Hi, I've seen this dress and it is a "permanent" wrap, not an actual wrap. It's really cute and flattering...I think that all of their wrap items are awesome!

Not for my kind of curves...

Horny Toad Posey Shirt - Sleeveless - Women's

Horny Toad Posey Shirt - Sleeveless - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 June 17, 2009

I'm 5'3" and normal weight (vary between 115 and 120 lbs), and this didn't look flattering at all on me. The material is adorable and the color on the rose shade is great, but honestly it is the same circumference around the chest as it was around the waist. I've got a noticeable difference between my chest and waist width that I prefer to define...about a 9-inch difference. This resulted in an almost tight fit on the bust and very loose waist fit in the extra small. That said, I think that women who are either a) taller than me, or 2) skinnier than me for their height could wear this shirt and make it look great. It was really cute and I'm bummed that it looked awful on me. Good luck!

Not a very modern fit

Lolë Travel Pant - Women's

Lolë Travel Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 May 11, 2009

Pros: The fabric is stretchy and fairly breathable, albeit not for warmer weather. It does dry quickly and resist (but not defy) wrinkles.

Cons: It looks like something my mom would wear. The pockets are a flattering touch for the back, but the pants are too roomy in the bum and thigh area to provide a slimming effect. I'm fairly petite but am not skinny, and I have a substantial rear area for my size, but these tend to make me look heavier than I am. Part of this is due to the thickness of the pant material, which also refuses to lie flat at the waistband, thus adding to the heaviness effect. I think that taller women women or women that are not highly petite would find these pants more flattering than I did.

I'm going to repeat Carly's question because it's a good one, and I need to know too - is the water bottle holder big enough for the 32oz. Nalgene bottles?

Great Replacement for Those OId Sweatpants

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Pant - Women's

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

I recently bought these pants for a trip to Europe, and they were priceless. I wanted something to keep me warm at night in the hostels, dry quickly, and be appropriate for mixed-dorm rooms and for running downstairs before they took away free breakfast (e.g. not skin-tight thermals). These are ridiculously soft and warm and lightweight, and they dried as fast as my best travel-specific clothing. They would be useful for a multitude of activities in my opinion, and they are pretty flattering. The waistband didn't bother me, and the length/fit of the Smalls were fine on my 5' 3" frame.

Super Short Jacket

Arc'teryx Trident Softshell Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Trident Softshell Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 May 11, 2009

I have a short torso and am 5 foot 3 inches, and this thing was way too short in the waist in the XS. I almost think this would only work on a tall woman who is looking for that short-jacket style and wears warm layers to show between the jacket and pants. Maybe others will have better luck, but I agree with an earlier reviewer that the fit is way off. Too bad - I was looking forward to finally owning (affording) an Arc'teryx jacket.

Flattering and Versatile

Cloudveil Ice Flower Vest - Women's

Cloudveil Ice Flower Vest - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

I've tried on a few styles of insulated vests over the past year because I will be moving to Seattle soon. Most were just too puffy and big (e.g. TNF, MH), and others that were slimmer had major gapping problems in the armholes or flared funny at the waist (e.g. Marmot). The fit is slim while leaving room for a sweater underneath, and the lack of major quilting provides a longer and more streamlined visual effect. I'm 5'3 and around 118 lbs and the XS is perfect. It is lightweight, stuffs small, and the collar can be worn up or down. I only wish it came in more colors (dark brown/black) because I would get a second one.

Post-Trip Update Review

Scapegoat Village Insulated Jacket - Women's

Scapegoat Village Insulated Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 1, 2009

I don't usually do double reviews, but this product deserves it. I just got back from an early spring trip to England and France. I wore this jacket almost constantly until it warmed up in Paris at the end of my trip. Because it packs down relatively well for its size, I was able to stuff it in my large purse when it was too warm. I wore this in light drizzle and 40 F London temps at night, and I think it would have kept me warm at least down to low 30's. It is great at keeping your core warm, even if it doesn't look like it is that technical. I also received a lot of compliments/attention while wearing this, and the green color really is fantastic. I have absolutely no regrets now about purchasing it!

Warmer than expected

Scapegoat Village Insulated Jacket - Women's

Scapegoat Village Insulated Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2009

I am leaving for a trip to the UK and France in a few days, and I needed a stylish warm jacket that would be lighter than my thick wool peacoat for traveling. With only one review so far on here, I was skeptical to drop a lot of money on this jacket, even on sale. Thanks to Backcountry.com's return policy, I felt brave enough to give it a go. The Absinthe color looks very nice in peron, and the fit was true to size - slim and flattering without constricting. The dark color would be even more flattering, but I had too much dark clothing already. I can tell that it has a high warmth to weight ratio, which is what I will need in the cold temperatures of Europe and winter city wear back home. No "snowman look" here - very classy and urban. My only gripes are:

1)the belted waist adjustments only have two snaps each, which doesn't allow me to adjust quite small enough for my own build - but it's pretty close.
2)the waist is rather high for my taste. I know that's a style, but I prefer a more natural waist on a jacket.

Overall, the Scapegoat Village is cute, streamlined, and feels quite warm. If it will help you determine sizing, I bought the XS and weigh +/-115 lbs, and am 5'3" in height. I could still wear it if (when) I fluctuate up 5-10 lbs. It's a steal on sale!

ExOfficio Soytopia Bikini - Women's

ExOfficio Soytopia Bikini - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 6, 2009

I've been looking for good hiking/travel underwear, and these are it. They are as soft as butter and seem like they would fit well on anyone (unless the fit is too large). FYI, I'm about 113 lbs and 5'3", and the XS/SM fit fine. Any bigger would not have worked. Most importantly, these breathe amazingly well and don't seem to stink up much. I love that they don't create panty lines or bunch up at all. Just make sure you order down if you are in doubt. I just wish they made a version that was even lower cut with a narrower waistband, but it's still better than anything else I've tried. The rise is still flattering, and the Coral color is much nicer than shown (warmer - more coral than pink).

In comparison, I have the Ex Officio Give N Go Bikini, and I think the Soytopia Bikini is far superior in terms of odor-resistance, comfort, and fit. No diaper-butt with these!

Want to Wear It All the Time

Outdoor Research Echo Jacket - Women's

Outdoor Research Echo Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 30, 2009

This jacket fits perfect in the XS for me - I'm a petite female who wants technical features in a jacket that is actually attractive and flattering. I've tried a lot of jackets, and I think this is a great compromise for a variety of weather and activities. The fit is very slimming while allowing some layering underneath. The Pomegranite color is gorgeous. Best of all, cat hair doesn't stick to the outside - but you still get the cuddly soft lining. ;) I honestly didn't want take it off once it arrived!

Practical but not for petite women

Marmot Destination Jacket - Women's

Marmot Destination Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 March 27, 2009

I looked high and low for a rain jacket that was long enough for sitting down in wet areas and stylish enough for city living. I love the Port color of the Marmot Destination Jacket, which I bought based on the stellar reviews. However, I disagree with the other reviewers about the fit. It might be great for a certain body type/height, but I would say this jacket is not for you if you are a size 2 or 4. I'm between 115 and 120 lbs (I fluctuate), 5'3", and this jacket was too big in the Extra Small. The shoulders are much too wide, and the body overall just has too much material in the width. If I used the waist adjuster in the back, it only bunched up and looked weird because of all the excess material. It also does not adjust very small. I tried wearing this over my thick wool peacoat and it was still much too bulky. I'm sure not everyone has this fit problem, but I wanted to send a warning out to other petite women. FYI, I do not have a "slender" bone structure or narrow shoulders by any means. I am medium to robust in my bone structure for my height/weight. It's nice-looking and functional, and I really wanted to love it, but it should fit a range of normal sizes for that price.

Columbia Topaz Trail Jacket - Women's

March 20, 2009

A long-sleeved shirt would be fine, but I wouldn't plan on wearing anything thick like a sweater underneath it. It's made to be slim-fitting (for a jacket). Mine is stretchy and flattering without being skin-tight. I ordered it in my "typical" size. It's a great deal at this price!

Not for Everyone

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Women's

The North Face Apex Bionic Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 March 9, 2009

I know that everyone seems to love this jacket...and I really tried. But I found it to run too large. I'm on the petite side, but not "skinny" - just normal-bodied for 5'3". I found this to be a little on the short side in the XS, but it was too big around the torso and waist. It gapped at the bottom and was not sleek and flattering in my opinion. Too bad, because I got a great price on it.

Best Fit I've Found Yet

Contourwear Wrap Top - 3/4-Sleeve - Women's

Contourwear Wrap Top - 3/4-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 2, 2009

So, I am 5'3" and vary between 115 and 120, C-cup chest, and my limbs are not toothpicky by anyone's opinion…but I found the XS in the Contourwear top to be PERFECT! In years of gear clothes shopping, I would be hard-pressed to find another top that is so anti-wrinkle, warm yet breathable, soft, and incredibly flattering without it having to be black. Although I'm relatively fit, I often have to wear dark colors to create a slimming effect because of my slightly shorter height and curves. With the Teal color Contourwear top, I found that I looked slimmer without the need for color deception. I even had people comment on how Id lost weight when I wore it…I hadnt! It fits me close but just right around the chest while skimming my middle rather than clinging to it (so no pooch show-through). The shoulders are a teeny bit tight though. My advice would be to expect fashion sizing with this top rather than outdoor gear sizing, which tends to run larger. The length was just right for me, too. I just bought another one in a different color in addition to the long-sleeved version. In my opinion, this shirt is a great combination of function, classiness, and sexiness!

Even Better than Pictured

prAna Bliss Jacket - Women's

prAna Bliss Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 February 22, 2009

I can't believe that no one has reviewed this product. I tend to be rather selfish about reviews...I depend on them entirely for my purchases, but I am horrible about remembering to leave them for others. The prAna Bliss Jacket motivated me, however. This is a very lightweight jacket that is certainly for warmer weather, but oh my goodness is it flattering! I am on the small side (5'3", varying between 115-120 lbs) but I have a curvier build. This is stretchy but not overly form-fitting, not too short or too long, nice fabric, and has a very slimming silhouette without being tight around the middle. It's especially good for those of us who are no longer teeny boppers and have to dress like adults, but still want to look sexy.
