The North Face Nuptse Jacket - Men's

The North Face Nuptse Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 7, 2006

This jacket is the de facto standard of it's type for style and warmth that many jackets are compared to- you will find duplicates of it made by LL Bean, Mountain Hardware, Marmot, etc. It's debateable which is the best, but The Norht Face has a longstanding good reputation although it comes at a slightly higher price.
It does not stop wind or water, so anything colder than 15 degrees or with 10+ mph winds you really should have a shell jacket over it. And if down gets wet you might as well take it off.
Like the Denali fleece, the Nuptse is made to zip into several Gore-Tex aka Hyvent shells TNF makes, although they are expensive (because of the PTFE aka Teflon they are made with) they do add an extra layer of warmth and extra types of protections. You can really tell the difference when a shell is added to it too.

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Men's

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 7, 2006

This is a 2-layer (TNF calls this Hyvent) shell to fit over the Denali fleece or Nuptse jacket to give you wind and water protection and an extra layer of warmth.
What surprised me when I received it was how exceptionally well it was constructed. A quick look over how it was pieced together really is impressive. That's what you get for a $200 jacket, besides the fact that Gore-Tex is an expensive material (because of the PTFE aka Teflon) which makes all technical shells around this price.
Some of the color schemes aren't my cup of tea (though you can't go wrong with the classic blacks, blues, or greys) and maybe it's not as stylish as say a Spyder jacket, but it does it's job well and is really well made.
