Great Deal!

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2010

The Grigri is a great belay device, the standard. Even better, with this package you get a nice auto locking 'biner and the Grigri for $92, which is *cheaper* than just the Grigi.

Great with Asolo boots

Black Diamond Contact Strap Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 January 18, 2010

Wonderful general use crampons to use with your hiking/backpacking boots. They fit snug with Asolo's and as a bonus they come off and on easily. I've comfortably taken these up to about a 50 degree slope on Mt Whitney (MR). Hairier than that and you'll want a different setup.

Add gaiters to the cart while you're at it. Crampons without gaiters will cause you to catch/rip your pants and stumble.

$100 Piece of Mind

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Rating for this product: 4 January 14, 2010

This piece is great when you're belaying the hangdog of the group. It's also comforting to know your belay is using an auto-locker when unwelcome illogical scenarios come streaming through your head 50ft off the deck.

Save $$$: purchase the "Grigri & Am'D Package" and get an auto locking 'biner and the Grigri for $92, which is *cheaper* than just the Grigi.

Bomber Weekend Pack

Black Diamond Quantum 55 Pack - 3234-3356cu in

Black Diamond Quantum 55 Pack - 3234-3356cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 14, 2010

This pack has taken me up some of the great California 14ers including Shasta & Whitney. What separates this pack from the others in the sub-4-pound category is the lightweight material, which after 2 years is still very water resistant.

The Quantum's suspension and padding are a major improvement over BD's previous packs. I've stuffed 45lbs into this pack comfortably. A larger-than-normal collar allows the Quantum to easily gain an extra 5-10 more liters of volume.

The removable small bivy pad (to extend your 3/4 pad), axe loops, and crampons straps make this your go-to alpine pack. The weight will make this your favorite for lower elevation endeavors too.

Great Fit on this Softshell Upgrade

Outdoor Research Credo Softshell Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Credo Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 12, 2010

This jacket is an upgrade in cut and material from your standard $100 softshell.

The fit: If you are slim and tall or just like longer jackets, this is your softshell. Look to the Marmot Ultima or Mountain Hardwear Synchro if you like it shorter.

The double zip is great for belaying. The only con is the floppy collar; it could be stiffer.

The North Face Liberation Pant - Men's

October 27, 2009

How durable are these going to be when scrambling over mountains?

I'm looking for mountaineering pants for under $225. Gore-tex is a major plus but I'm worried about blowing out the rear when scooting down rock.
