Simple, functional headlamp. Comes with Energizer batteries!

Black Diamond Cosmo Headlamp

Black Diamond Cosmo Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 June 17, 2012

I bought this headlamp because it had the fewest light modes I could find. I don't want to cycle through 15 options every time I need light. High and low should do it. The Cosmo has high and low, with a strobe that's activated by pushing the button three times in quick succession. Both high and low have a dimmer option as well, which is pretty cool. Once the lamp is on, you just hold down the power button until you reach the desired dimness. More features than I wanted, but smart, well-thought-out ones.
I was very impressed that BD included Energizer brand batteries with the lamp, instead of generics. There may not be much of a difference, but it's a little peace of mind, regardless. For a $30 headlamp, it's exactly what I want. There are brighter, lighter, tougher headlamps out there, but for general use, I think this one does quite nicely. I also like that you can get it in white, which is much easier to find deep in a drybag or pack.

Really solid design

Deuter Streamer Water Reservoirs

Deuter Streamer Water Reservoirs

Rating for this product: 4 June 17, 2012

This bladder is the first one with a quick connect I've used that didn't leak. It's silly to have to put all your stuff in ziplocs inside your bag because you can't trust the bladder, but that's exactly what we all end up doing. Thanks, Camelbak. This Deuter/Source streamer bladder is slick. The helix/bite valve is rock-solid, and ensures that all your stuff stays dry when you throw the bag in the back of the car at the end of the day. It's not that water will drip out if the helix valve is open, it wont, but it acts as a backup to inadvertent pressure on the bite valve. The fold-over top design is also nice, and a welcome change from the 'i hope it's tight enough' screw caps other bladders use. I dinged it a star because I wish the slider would lock on a little more securely. I haven't had it ome loose or anything, but for peace of mind, I'd like more security.

ACR WW-3 Res-Q Whistle

ACR WW-3 Res-Q Whistle

Rating for this product: 5 June 17, 2012

This thing is nowhere near the 40 grams claimed in the tech specs over there. I put it on my digital kitchen scale and it weighed in at 7 grams, with the little lanyard included. Light enough that you (quite literally) won't even notice you're carrying it. Oh, and it's loud and small, and the lack of a pea makes it so it won't rattle around in/on your pack. well worth 2.50.

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 1100ml

Rating for this product: 4 April 22, 2012

As others have said, the pan/lid is nearly useless, but if you were frying a small, square-ish chunk of meat or tofu, it'd probably work OK. The handles are pretty nice, but the lid gets downgraded here, again, because the bits of metal that hold the handle to the pan are a little sharp, and dug into the sides of my panniers more than I would have liked. A simple lid would have been preferable. It held a 225g fuel canister, an MSR Pocket Rocket, and a lighter with a small amount of room left over.

Rating for this product: 4 April 22, 2012

This is a nice little tarp for solo outings or for use as a communal kitchen/gathering area with a few friends. Lots of tie-outs to make whatever shape you'd like, and one nice one in the center of the tarp that doesn't show in the picture. I pitched it using my bike as the supports, and it worked nicely (saddle for one end, and wrapped it over my front wheel on the other end).

Gore Bike Wear Power 2.0 Bib Shorts

Gore Bike Wear Power 2.0 Bib Shorts

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2011

While it's definitely not as nice for extended road rides as some of the more expensive options out there, these are my go-to bibs for mountain biking and road rides that I think will be under 2 hours. The chamois is substantial, but stays close to your body, and feels pretty low profile in the saddle. The rest of the fabric is nice enough, and doesn't typically bother me in any way.

Great bang for the buck, and seem to really last.

I wear these for mountain biking, commuting, and road biking (can't wear those half-finger things). They're tough as nails, have low profile but substantial padding, and haven't worn out after wearing them exclusively for an entire season. My one complaint is that they're pretty warm, and can be a bit much in the heat of summer. Absolutely awesome once temps are below 80, though.

Shimano SH-M087G Shoes

Shimano SH-M087G Shoes

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2011

These shoes are awesome for commuting, spin class, and short MTB rides. They're comfortable, wide, and reasonably stiff. They're not so awesome once you pass the two hour mark. After that, they seem to head downhill, fast. The thin insole takes its toll on your feet, and you start to feel the recesses in the plastic underneath. Awhile later, you feel the bolt holes for your cleats, and by the time you're at around 4 hours, everything hurts.
Basically, these are badass entry-level shoes, but if you ride a lot, you'll want something a little nicer.

Cutter Classic Jersey - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 22, 2011

I love the merino wool, but don't expect to load all your road ride necessities into the pockets. By the time I put tube, C02, and multi-tool in the middle pocket, it was hanging halfway down my butt. If you're riding with a pack or a saddle bag, this wouldn't be as big of a deal, but then why would you be wearing a jersey with pockets?

I picked up these waffles out of curiosity and an inability to find them at any local stores -they had all sold out. I know why; these waffles are amazing. They are hands down the best tasting 'energy food' I've ever had, and seem to offer a similar boost to GU or half a sleeve of shot blocks. The waffles go down easy, and don't leave gooey remnants all over your mouth like the gels and blocks do. I can't recommend them highly enough. Vittoria Randonneur Hyper Tire

Vittoria Randonneur Hyper Tire

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2011

I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was doing -possibly super low pressure, given that many pinch flats, but I've had nothing but positive experience with these tires. The only struggle I had was actually mounting the tire initially, it was one of those tire/rim combinations that just didn't agree. Lots of miles, few flats, and smooth. If I'm nitpicking, I would probably lean towards the Fyxation Session 700 tires because they roll a little faster and the tread is a little more substantial, but I'd be perfectly happy with either one.

Killer commuting tires

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2011

I've been running these tires on my commuter for about 6 months of daily commutes. Each commute averages about 15 miles round trip, plus or minus beer run miles, and I've also been riding the same bike for training on weekends, so these tires have seen a pretty good chunk of mileage. I've been nothing but happy with them; they're great in all weather, including snow and slush. I've only had a couple of flats, and they were due to incredibly long, evil goat head thorns that had just barely made their way through the tire and into the tube. I'd run these on any non-racing bike (they are a smidge heavy, but not bad when you consider the flat protection and overall durability). The whitewalls get dirty in a hurry, but they look great when they're all cleaned up.

Stoic Breaker Fleece Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2009

First, a confession, my name is Brian, and I am a jacket slut. You name a situation, and I've got a jacket for it. Down puffy - check; synthetic slightly less puffy - check; 3 layer pro shell - check; you get the point. This jacket replaces just about everything except for your hard shells. It's comfortable in a wide range of temps, I've worn it down to about 27 degrees and been perfectly comfortable with just a t-shirt underneath. It blocks enough wind to keep you warm, but breathes enough to make it a good choice for cold weather aerobic activity, like cross country skiing. I've worn it every single day since owning it, and have yet to be disappointed in any capacity. It's great outside, it's great around the house, and it's great for that sunday morning walk to the store to get more beer for football.

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Orange Insole

Rating for this product: 1 July 1, 2009

These are WAY to beefy for most cycling shoes. I feel that way about most superfeet insoles, but these ones in particular. These are designed to fit into workboots. The way superfeet align your foot is to create a very large and solid heel cup. This works OK in most shoe applications, but in low-volume cycling shoes, there is little to no chance of this being a comfortable insole. It will push your heel up too high, and your shoe will not retain your heel as it is designed to.

Vittoria Zaffiro Pro 2 Tire - Clincher

Rating for this product: 4 July 1, 2009

I use these on what used to be my commuter, but has now come into the job of recreation and training bike. It's not the lightest bike, and I'm not too concerned about weight overall. These are a nice tire for a situation like mine, where you want a reasonably priced tire that will last a long time. I commuted on these for about a year before I had issues (semi-regular commuting, average 2-3 days per week), but when I had issues, they were pretty big. Three flats in one ride, alternating tires big. Until that point though, they'd done a bang-up job. Definitely recommended.

Cutter Tech Knickerbocker - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 1, 2009

I know not everyone has quads like Captain America, but if you do, these probably won't work for you. They are one of the most impressive pieces of gear I've seen out there (and I've seen a lot), but they were just too tight on my thighs. I bought the XL, because I'm right between a 38 and 40 waist, and the waist fit fine. I have fairly muscular legs, and the bottoms of these were actually tight around my calves as well, leaving the only parts that actually fit as my waist and knees. This was funny to me as I've had two knee surgeries in the last year, and my knees are still swollen pretty regularly. At any rate, this is an incredibly nice piece of equipment if your legs tend more towards aspen than sequoia.

Rating for this product: 3 July 1, 2009

This seemed like a pretty straightforward choice. It's a nice looking jersey from a company I trust to make nice stuff. Unfortunately, the cut was not what I was expecting. For reference, I wear an XXL in Pearl Izumi jerseys, and this was much much much smaller than that. In addition to being tight enough to count my chest hairs, it was so short that I'm not sure bibs would have given me enough coverage. In fairness, I do have an unnaturally long torso, but this was simply not the jersey for me.

In the last year, I wore these shorts on the majority of days that it was in any way reasonable to wear shorts, and they have held up great, and performed flawlessly every time. (Even if your idea of flawless is being able to wipe barbecue sauce off them when grilling). Great pair of shorts, I'm planning to get a few more pairs for the summer. The only pair of shorts I've ever had that was this versatile are my Dickies shorts, which are a bit heavier than these, and not quite as easy to move in. The only real downside to this light is the use of AA batteries instead of a rechargeable battery. I use rechargeable AAs, but it's still more of a pain than having a light-specific battery. I wouldn't use it for 24 hour races or anything like that, but it's a pretty solid commuting light, the low LED setting seems to be sufficient for city riding, which is good, because if you run it high, you'll burn the battery in a hurry. CycleOps Rollers

CycleOps Rollers

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

I bought these for the sole purpose of improving my riding form and control, and they are doing a great job of it. THey will help correct any deficiencies in your pedal stroke, any inefficient movements you make, anything at all. For instance, I didn't know that I put a lot of weight on my bars when shifting, but when I shifted on the rollers, my wheel immediately turned to the side and I had to recover my line. The rollers themselves are extremely well made, and the folding feature is very nice for storing yet another piece of gear. Definitely recommend these for anyone.

I bought these to go with the rollers I also bought from here, and I like it quite a bit. It is a nice thick material, and definitely keeps the carpet in better shape than it would be with sweat dripping into it all the time. A simple product, but sometimes those are the best ones .

I got this to go with the Backcountry down sweater for my girlfriend for Christmas (it was a BC holiday) and she wears it all the time. THe pockets are less than super functional, but the hoodie keeps her warm, which is no small feat. It is nicely cut, and she looks great in it!

I bought this as a christmas present for my girlfriend, and it garnered rave reviews from her and her family (phew!). It keeps her warm, and she's almost always cold. I think there have only been a couple of days this winter that she hasn't worn it. Comfortable down to around 10 degrees I would guess, then just throw a shell over it and you're golden!

Wear them for a month at a time...

Carhartt Washed-Duck Dungaree Work Dungaree Pant - Men's

Carhartt Washed-Duck Dungaree Work Dungaree Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

These pants cannot be beat. I've tried Levis, dickies, and other so called "work" pants, and nothing beats these for fit, comfort, and durability. I work in a warehouse, and will honestly wear these for a month at a time, they stand up to just about anything you can throw at them. I get about 2 years out of a pair of these, and about half that out of the last pair of jeans I bought. These are also well cut for people with active size quads and calf muscles. One of my ongoing complaints about a lot of pants is that they won't fit well over my thighs and calves, and these definitely do the job well.

Carhartt Double-Front Washed Duck work Dungaree Pant - Men's

Carhartt Double-Front Washed Duck work Dungaree Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

Probably the most durable, best fitting pant on the market. I have a closet full of technical clothes and lighter pants than these tanks, but I still wear these nearly every day in the cooler months. Double front is super tough, and will almost never die on you. The pockets start to fray where you wallet sits after a few years, but that's no big deal.

Comfort update

Chaco Redrock Mesh Hiking Shoe - Men's

Chaco Redrock Mesh Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 January 30, 2009

I bought these last summer, and initially liked them, and without giving them too much of a torture test, decided they were comfortable, even though I wished there was slightly more padding/support. The padding/support issue became a much bigger deal after a few weeks of break in time. It became apparent that these were strictly casual shoes, and that they weren't designed for you to spend all day hiking in. They have only marginally more support than my Vibram Five fingers shoe (not much more than a thin rubber sole if you're not familiar). I've kept them around in part because I can't throw away a perfectly good shoe, and in part because they're a pretty good car camping kick around shoe, almost moccasin-like. I tried to make these work, I even put some Superfeet insoles in them to up the level of support a little bit, but it still didn't cut it. Hopefully Chaco comes to their sense this year and puts out a burly shoe with a sole worthy of the Chaco name.

Good all-around shoe

Merrell Moab Ventilator Hiking Shoe - Men's

Merrell Moab Ventilator Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 30, 2009

I got these after numerous attempts at finding a supportive shoe that was wide enough, but not super wide, all failed. I tried these on at a local store and loved them, bought them on the spot. I've been wearing them daily for a little over six months now, and have been very impressed with their durability and performance. I'm a big person, and my nearly 300 pounds puts a level of stress on footwear that very few others can match. If a shoe can last 6 months of daily use, the manufacturer did something very right.

I've only recently had to reinforce these with superfeet, which I do most of my shoes after 3-4 months, because they just can't take the beating. I was a little concerned also about wearing these in the winter, but it is now the end of january, and I've only had minor problems (snow over the tops, etc.) but I think they are pretty comfortable over a wide range of temperatures. I think I've just about beat this pair into submission, and I will most likely get another pair to replace them. I may even get two pairs and rotate them so they last longer. Great shoe, can't say enough good things about it.

Waist band needs help, otherwise super cozy

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Pant - Women's

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 January 20, 2009

I bought these for my girlfriend to wear as a cold weather running pant. They've been co-opted into everyday cozy pants, and they perform flawlessly in that regard. However, the waistband is only stitched at the two side seams, and the elastic is folded up just a bit to make the stitch shorter. These two things combined cause the elastic to roll inward, and make the waistband fit very strangely. This was obviously done to achieve a clean-looking line at the waist, but function should come first. Great pants, but they need a reworking at the waist to get more than three stars.

Princeton Tec Swerve Bike Tail Light

Rating for this product: 4 September 16, 2008

I like this light's simplicity and ease of mounting/use. There's no weird push button switch that may or may not turn it on, the switch makes it very clear whether your light is going to be on, and I like that. It won't get bumped and turn off, and it's definitely bright enough to keep you visible.

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2008

I purchased this for my girlfriend to use, because she hates running with water bottles in her hands, and it is the most well thought out piece of gear either of us owns. The adjustments at the sides are easy to make, and keep that pack very secure against the back. The front strap slides vertically so as to get you the best fit possible, regardless of endowment. I should mention that this pack talks about being a women-specific pack throughout all the tags that come with it, although that isn't mentioned on the site.

Carhartt Work-Dry T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 September 16, 2008

This is the first carhartt product I've purchased that I'm not in love with. It's a t-shirt, does the t-shirt job, but is not nearly as tough as their cotton t-shirts are. Feels ok when wearing it, but it also shows sweat the second it gets a little wet, which is kind of a pain if you want to look presentable while you're sweating your ass off at work.

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2008

This is an awesome bag! I got one for my girlfriend for her birthday, and was a little nervous, because she is a very cold sleeper, and because I wasn't super familiar with MontBell's products. This bag blew me away and exceeded every expectation I had. Oh, and it kept her warm too. The elastic around the bag makes it very efficient, while still being comfortable. We were in fairly cold weather (about 20-25 degrees overnight) and she was warm as could be, which is pretty rare. 5 stars and two thumbs up!

Good, definitely 3 (light) seasons

Mountain Hardwear Casa 6 Tent 6-Person 3-Season

Mountain Hardwear Casa 6 Tent 6-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 September 1, 2008

This tent is pretty damn cool, and I definitely stayed mostly dry throughout the gnarliest rainstorm I've ever seen in Utah's high Uintas. That said, one side of the tent did collapse briefly under the weight of some ice/snow mixture whose weight was increased by the constant rain. The problem is that the front of the tent does not drain all that well, it pools and then runs off all at once, resulting in a slightly startling phwooooop when the water hits the ground.

Setup is easy, once you figure out how the pole goes, and the vestibule is a nice size and keeps everything dry. The floor did not leak one little bit during the aforementioned rainstorm, and I had no condensation problems whatsoever, even in heavy rain.

As far as size goes, it would be comfortable with three people on pads, I was with my girlfriend, and it was a nice size for the two of us car camping with car camping pads and bags and duffels and whatnot. The peak height is somewhat misleading, as it is only that high right at the door, and then it slopes down as you go back. Very comfortable for my 6'5" frame, but definitely not a stand in the middle kind of tent.

Overall, I definitely recommend this tent, it is constructed incredibly well, and is very comfortable to sleep in. The fly could use a small redesign, but it only became a problem when the snow came, which isn't necessarily three season weather, so I don't hold it against Mountain Hardwear's designers. Great tent, possibly a little expensive for what it is, but I stayed dry as could be, and that's worth it to me. I'm sure I would not have been as comfortable or as dry in my Kelty tent, the seam sealing and attention to detail is where this tent excels.

Marmot Trestles 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Spirafil

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2008

I'm a pretty big fella (6'5" 290 lbs). I purchased the Mtn. Hardwear Switch bag a couple years year ago because it has a feature that allows the bag to be expanded by 8 inches. Even with this fully unzipped, so as to get the greatest girth out of the bag, I felt much more constricted than I would like from a 3 season bag.
This Marmot bag is just awesome! I fit in comfortably, and there is still room to sit up (with the hood on!) and move around a bit when sleeping. From a big guy, this bag is just awesome. Get the extra wide, it's worth it.

Snow Peak GigaPower Lantern-Auto Ignition

The grey button on the side next to the valve should be the piezo-ignition button, and should spark and light the lantern when attached to the gas canister. I say should because I've been less than impressed with auto-ignitors across the board, and while I haven't used this one specifically, I would guess that it works the same third of the time as all the others. You could also try matches or a lighter, but be careful, and make sure the flame is near the jet before you open the valve so it doesn't make a giant flame and burn the hair on your hands off. Wow, that doesn't sound like experience talking at all:)
