Ruffwear Approach Dog Pack

October 25, 2010

Bushwhacking county high points in Massachussetts:

My dog (65lbs) is wearing the red size medium pack, and her friend (40lbs) is wearing the green size small pack (with the straps cinched almost as small as they can go).

lightweight comfy but not waterproof and does not breathe

Montane Litespeed H2O Jacket - Women's

Montane Litespeed H2O Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 1 May 29, 2012

i bought this rain jacket in the winter in anticipation of a rainy spring hikes. i ended up using it on a number of winter hikes when i needed a windbreaker-type thing that wouldn't add too much weight to my pack.
In the winter, i would wear a wool base layer (or 2) with a wool sweater over that and add this Montane rain coat when it was windy or especially cold.

The good:
It worked very well for winter. The wool wicked sweat from my skin so i was dry while the Montane kept in my body heat so i was warm.
The coat is very lightweight so i never felt like i was carrying too much extra weight if i didn't end up using it.
i like the fit. i heeded the warnings of it being too tight and bought it 1-2 sizes larger than normal. it was a little baggy as a result but provided better coverage and allowed for layering underneath which i wanted. the drop hem really did cover my butt, and the hood was roomy enough for my ponytail and the cinch drawstring was tight enough to stay on my head while moving about. With the size up, it's very comfortable.

The bad:
It doesn't breathe. In the winter, i was kept dry by the wool but when i took the coat off, there was either a layer of typical sweat (when it was warm-ish) or a layer of frost-/snow-sweat trapped on the inside (when it was really cold)
It's not waterproof. Now that it's spring, I've used it some in the rain and it's ok for a sprinkle, but more than 10-15min in real rain and it soaks through completely.

i bought it on SAC so i can't return it, otherwise it would have gone back quickly. i guess i'll keep it in my pack as an emergency windbreaker. too bad, b/c it's the only comfortable raincoat i've found.

i'm looking for a warmer mid- to heavy-weight wool baselayer. Does Stoic make these in a warmer version? If not, what are my other options?

Burton Dandridge Down Jacket - Women's

November 25, 2011

How 'packable' is this coat? What does it weigh? I'm looking for something for hiking, not snowboarding, so it needs to be stow-able for the uphills.

Mountain Hardwear Cohesion Jacket - Women's

June 13, 2011

advice - long raincoat for hiking?
I'm looking for a raincoat to hike in that has venting, a substantial hood, and is *long enough* to completely cover my butt.
I'd also like to use it for biking, and my last raincoat was fine when I was standing but, when hunched over my handlebars, the rain ran down the back and directly into my pants.

This Cohesion coat looks to be longer than most but are there any raincoats out there that extend 6-8" below the 'natural waist'?

Ruffwear Approach Dog Pack

October 24, 2010

I tentatively disagree. I bought this pack in a medium for my black lab/golden mix puppy "to grow into", but it ended up being baggy on her full-grown frame (60lbs). I then bought a size small and she did great with that for a couple years until her metabolism slowed a little (65lbs); then the chest/under-arm strap became a little too tight. She is 68lbs right now and still wearing the small (because her medium ripped), but we are back to looking for a size medium on sale.
Delilah is a "tall"/slender dog though - not the usual barrel-chested lab - and a fuller-framed dog could well grow into a size large.

In the photo, my dog (65lbs) is wearing a red size medium pack in the previous model version; my friend's dog (55lbs) is wearing her green size small pack.

comfortable, weightless, sturdy

Arc'teryx Ether Crew Short-Sleeve - Women's

Arc'teryx Ether Crew Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2007

I bought two of these, in turquoise and brick red. They are soft, comfortable, extremely lightweight, and itch-free. I prefer the darker one, as the blue one is looking a bit dingy after numerous encounters with ground-in hiking dirt. Other than that, they look/feel as good as the day I bought them and I only regret that I don't own more. Highly recommended.
