La Sportiva Mythos Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Mythos Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 13, 2012

Comfortable, classic, proven shoes. Extremely durable leather and great design.

I picked these up as my second pair of climbing shoes. They are a great all around shoe. I mostly vertical and slightly overhanging walls and these perform as expected.

I went down 2 sizes from my street shoes - U.S. 11 to a U.S. 9. After almost one year, they are extremely comfortable and have not stretched too much. These lace up like boat shoes. Even if they do continue to stretch, the design of the lacing system keeps the heel nice and snug.

I have worn these almost one year of solid climbing, 2-3 days per week and am about ready for the first re-sole. They have held up extremely well. I climb with people who have resoled these 5-7 times and the shoes are still going strong.

I expect these shoes to last me many years.

Good design - weak construction

CAMP USA Armour Helmet

CAMP USA Armour Helmet

Rating for this product: 3 May 16, 2012

I want to like this helmet. For $60, I would expect it to hold up better.

After maybe 5 times out, the headlamp clips are falling off.

The helmet scuffs very easily and looks like it has been put through years of abuse.

It is comfortable.

Comfy and warm but quality is an issue

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 24, 2012

This jacket fits me well, is comfy and warm.

However, the quality is seriously lacking. Maybe I got a lemon?

I've worn it around town for a few weeks, since the holidays. I've been out in the cold down to about 30 degrees with this and a cotton t-shirt and have been plenty warm enough.

I haven't done anything active in it. The first time I put it on, one of the pocket zippers got stuck. After getting it unstuck, there were runs in the material, before I even put it on. I'm getting a lot of down feathers poking through at the seams. Just a few days ago, I got a hole in one of the pockets. 10 minutes later, I had my chapstick back from the inside of the jacket.

I contacted Backcountry.com for a replacement. They told me that they would exchange it for the same thing. However, the jacket was bought on sale, is still on sale (possibly clearance) and the exact item is no longer in stock. I was told that I could get it in a different color. Or I will have to pay the difference in cost for the new model, when it is available, if there is one. It's a real bummer, because I want to love this jacket.

Meh - Ok for belaying

Black Diamond Rocklock Carabiner

Black Diamond Rocklock Carabiner

Rating for this product: 4 December 13, 2011

I own both the twist lock and screw lock.

These biners are huge. The key lock is nice.

The twist lock has loosened up a bit after about 1 1/2 years of use of belaying only. I'm going to retire it soon, as it could accidentally open. There's no safety button or requisite motion other than simply twisting.

These biners LOVE to crossload when belaying with a GriGri. As soon as there's a little slack in the line, it crossloads. This can make for a horrible lead belaying experience.

They are too big and heavy for me for use in personal anchors. I'll take the Vaporlock for that. These will be used for TR anchor building, which they are great for, from here on out.

Best climbing pants

prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 13, 2011

There's no other way to put it - these pants are the best pants I've ever owned. If you climb and do not own these pants, buy them immediately. Then smack yourself upside the head for not doing so sooner, as I did.

Forget about scraped legs and cuts. Stay super cool in hot temps. These are the only pants I want to climb in, period. My female friend that I climb with laughs each time that I say they are the best pants I've ever owned. I think she is a little jealous of them.

They are super comfy. The material is stretchy. Buttons hold up nicely when rolled up, I don't have to fiddle with re-buttoning them all day. They have taken a lot of abuse and show no signs of wear. The material is very similar to the prAna Mojo shorts (which are also amazing), just doubled up.

The cargo pocket is genius. angled + side zipper = bomber design. It is perfect.

My only problem is finding them in a long size. I can't wear the regular length out of the gym. They won't work for anything but climbing and yoga, which they are designed for. I'm 6'1" 33in. waste. The medium waste is perfect. The 32" (regular) inseam is too short. The long are becoming increasingly hard to find. :-( Other than that, they are well worth the $70 I paid.
