Smith Holt Helmet

Smith Holt Helmet

So this is my first helmet... For my head - the only two that felt mostly comfortable trying them on at a place was this and the Giro Encore 2. The latter actually felt a bit more comfy from what I remember. The Holt did look better and higher quality but I probably would have gone with the Encore 2 had I not gotten this on sale for $15 off making them the same price. It's a bit larger than I wished - ideally a head forming helmet would look great but what's that going to do I guess. However, it isn't too large, looks great and will look perfect actually wearing other face accessories.

It's pretty light - besides not having complete freedom anymore - it feels like there isn't much on your head.

Beware - use the Smith Holt size chart as sizes are different for other brands and also other Smith models. I wear size M in the Encore 2 but a size S in Holt - which was confusing in the store until I looked at the size chart which matches my true measurement.

Fits perfectly (probably is better form fitting than others since I think they use smaller size intervals on the sizes - resulting in the size difference btwn models/brands) - there is a velcro'd in cloth liner with fabric padding all around the brim that I was told you can machine wash which is nice - you can't add padding and use that though as the padding doesn't have velcro on the exposed side but the liner alone actually feels more comfy and better fitting alone.

Oh - the giro's ear pads did feel more comfortable though - the pads on this touch the tops of my ears in a weird way but it's nothing terrible.

For a helmet... I suggest trying them on in a store first before buying them online for less... just to be sure it feels and looks good.

DAKINE Scout Glove - Men's

DAKINE Scout Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2009

I have yet to test these in any sort of snowy conditions but here are my initial thoughts: I actually price matched these to an amazing price after stumbling upon this model of gloves near the end of my search and am very glad on both points. They have all the bells and whistles - cinches and straps.

Putting the gloves on without the liners - they feel soft and comfortable and seem as though they'd be just as warm as a few gloves I tried in a store in the $50-60 range from grandoe, Burton and North Face's Montanas. You have more freedom in your fingers and hand to grasp than those other gloves it seems. This is probably because they are slightly more spacious to allow room for the fleece glove inserts.

The fleece gloves are much thicker than I thought they would be - I thought they would be a very thin one layer of cloth but they are a few/4 layers thick and are pretty much a standalone warmer weather glove. They look really nice actually and I'll probably wear them separately often.

The gloves with the fleece gloves are a pretty darn tight fit - you lose a lot of finger movement freedom (that's fine imo as snowboarding you don't really need it and I also have flow bindings) - almost feels slightly uncomfortable in the finger tips if you pull too tight.. so just put them in just enough and start your hand into the glove with the fleece gloves not pulled on fully so that the fleece isn't pulled extremely tight on your tips.

I can see the combo being extremely warm and in fact will probably resort to just wearing the gloves without the inserts as I'm not the type of person who gets cold easily nor cares - almost prefer being on the colder side.

For the price - they are definitely Great in comparison to the next competitors up. After some testing - if the gloves are good without the inserts (don't leak and are decently warm) then they'll be real winners... I'm not sure if they designed them to be similar to other gloves without the inserts or not but so far it seems like it. Otherwise, next time I'll try a pair without inserts just so you dont get that tight fingertip feeling to be warm.

Measured my hand using their size chart and based off of that they are sized perfectly. Also was the same size in those three other brands I mentioned above by means of trying those on.
