NEMO Equipment Inc. Morpho AR Tent 2-Person 3-Season

August 20, 2009

there are two parts to the inflatable beams:

The outer layer is used as a protective layer to prevent any damage to the inner beam which is actually being inflated. This layer is made from sailcloth. The inner bladder (which is actually getting blown up) is made out of polyurethane.

I went over 1,200 miles straight with the morpho without any issues. The beams worked great every night.

It will work great as a backcountry skiing jacket. The material is durable and will hold up to any scrapes by branches. The only downside is it doesn't have a snow shield around the waste like most ski jackets. If you can live without that though, it'll work great

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 2 June 26, 2009

So I've had this for a while, and I really do love it. It's comfortable and light. However, I'm not sure if it's just because it's all air, but the past few nights I've used it, I wake up with my butt touching the ground -- the air just doesn't stay in all night. Whether its the air pressure or a leak, I have had it replaced already, and it is still happening. It's a shame, but oh well.

I've used all types of socks, and these are by far the best. The short ones are more of my day by day use socks, and they are great. My full height ones lasted over 1,000 miles and are still working great. Most comfortable socks ever, and its great to pay $12 for a pair socks I will be able to replace whenever they start to wear out.

Keep in mind, smartwool has a lifetime guarantee, so if they ever do start to wear thin, they will replace them for free.

these are great to have on extended trips. If you wear these inside of your regular smartwools, you won't get as much sweat and grime on the full sized pair making them last longer without washing. With the liners, you can wash them in a stream and they will dry much faster than the regular socks.

Not only that, but the black ones make great dress socks as well.

My buddy and I used these montbell jackets for 125 days on a thru-hike going through 3 seasons, snow, rain, etc. I agree with the others, if you go bushwacking with it, it'll get torn up. However, minor dings and scrapes won't rip it. Neither of us had any type of issue with holes. The entire line is great, and more durable than you would think as long as you're not stupid about it.

Never charged

Solio Solio Hybrid 1000 Charger

Solio Solio Hybrid 1000 Charger

Rating for this product: 3 June 18, 2009

I tried to use this to keep juice in my phone on my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, and never once got a charge. The only way it will get a charge is if it sits in the sun, without moving, all day. I clipped it to my pack, rigged it so that it would sit on top, and tried 5 other positions to get it to charge while hiking, but I was just ducking under trees too much for the sun to actually hit it enough to charge. Left it on my pack for 2 weeks before I sent it home, and never more than 20% charged. It was a shame, I really wanted it to work.

However, if you go camping, you can just leave it at your campsite to charge while you venture through the woods or mountains so you have power when you get back.

Gregory Baltoro 70 Backpack - 4149-4638cu in

June 18, 2009

You need the correct adjustments to prevent the swing on the pack. To slim it down, make sure the compression straps are pulled tightly on the sides. This will keep the center of gravity closer to your back. To get a tight feel, the two straps which are on your shoulders should be pulled tightly. What that will do will pull the top part of the pack towards your shoulders creating a snug fit.

As for the camelback, I used the baltoro for a 125 day thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail without any problems with the hydration port. What I did for the tube was just got a clip and clipped it to my chest strap.

hope this helps!

Patagonia Houdini Full-Zip Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Houdini Full-Zip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 18, 2009

Love how small this gets, its light, and an over-all nice jacket. The hood has a tightening system so instead of squishing the front so you can't see out, it tightens it around your head and to the back of the jacket so in high winds the hood will stay on your head and you'll still be able to see!

This, however, is not a rain jacket. It'll be ok for sprinkles or flurries, but not actual rain. I am thinking about washing it with Nik Wax to try and waterproof it. Other than the no protection from the rain, its a great layer, and if you're in buggy season, keeps the bugs from eating you alive without making you sweat to death.

Also the picture is a little misleading -- it looks bulkier and puffier than it actually is.

I like this watch because it works well. You need to adjust your altimeter before each activity if there are multiple days between them because the change in weather can affect the altimeter, but that is normal for any watch. Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sack DO NOT USE

June 10, 2009

Yes, this is good for food storage. I would suggest, however, getting the thicker sea to summit bags. I used those every day on my thru-hike and walking through 14 states and 2,200 miles, I never once had an issue with animals of any size smelling or dealing with the bag. If you have an airtight seal, that basically means its odor proof as well, So it works very well. Easy to hang if you feel the need to, and extremely durable.

Vasque Wasatch GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

June 7, 2009

I hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and these boots would give out on me within 500-600 miles. Got them replaced twice and eventually scrapped them all together as the problem repeated itself (cracked sole.) The two boots I would suggest for what you're doing are the two me and my thru-hiking buddy had:

the asolo TPS 520 GV which has gone 1400 miles and are still kicking (pun intended)

and the mammut Mt. Trail XT GTX which have shown no sign of breakdown after 800 miles.

Be careful when looking for a nicely priced boot, if you are putting it to the limits, you will want something reliable and that will last. If that means spending an extra $40 now, that'll save you at least $150 later on a new pair.

happy trails

They are made of waterproof fabric. That being said, your feet will inevitably get wet. between the stitchings, going over the boat, and in hot conditions, just sweat build up -- you can't stop the wetness from happening. If you are fording large rivers that goes above the middle of the tongue, your best bet would be to find a pair of quick drying socks and carry news paper to dry out the inside of your boots. The other options (the one I used when fording rivers along the Appalachian Trail in Maine) is to take the extra minute to stop and change into crocs. If the streams are really small and wont go up high, then you won't have too much to worry about, your feet will stay pretty dry.

Howdy,
I've used this basically every day for 4 months on my Appalachian Trail thru-hike. I will say, it was unfortunate that there aren't any pockets, but if you want pockets, the therma-wrap has them and is a tad bit warmer. It's not as light, but thats the one my buddy uses and he loves it.

As for durability, I've stuffed it in the sack and pulled it out everyday and there hasn't been any issues. The only issue was a little burn hole -- but that was my fault.

Awesome jacket, I HIGHLY recommend it if you need to save some ounces and don't mind no pockets.

I am thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, and spandex is the best thing to wear on a daily basis as they dry quickly when wet and give lots of support.

These are excellent, fit great, feel great, and good for long term use. The only problem with them is the waist is not elastic, it is a drawstring. For me, this means my backpack waist straps go directly where the waist strap is and it wasn't very comfortable, I would need to finangle a way to make it comfortable.

SmartWool Adrenaline Mid Crew Hiking Sock

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2009

What I have put this sock through:

hiking 22 miles a day for months on end while only washing it once a week.

I used many types and brands of socks for my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, and this was by far the best. Most socks get hard after a couple days and not being washed, however, these stayed soft for much longer than any other. It is a wool sock, so my feet would get a little hot, but the thin spots on top kept my feet more dry. My boots are also very thick tough boots that don't breathe terribly well (I needed sturdy boots for the winter months) and my foot was still dry. In short, these are the best socks I've ever owned. Vasque Wasatch GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Vasque Wasatch GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 April 26, 2009

I bought these shoes because I heard they were really durable and comfortable. I will admit, they were incredibly comfortable, they fit my foot really well, and was all around a great boot at first.

After about a month and 600 miles, the sole had cracked all the way up to the base of the shoe, and the rubber cap on the front started to peel off. Granted, not many people who buy this shoe is thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, but I still felt that wasn't acceptable. So, I e-mailed Vasque and got them replaced. About another month and 700 miles later, both of the new ones were cracked again. So, I told them I didn't want those anymore and they replaced them with the Clarion. They don't look as durable as these do, the leather held up really well and was a very comfortable shoe, however, at this point, if the Clarion don't hold up, I'll just go with a new company. I do commend Vasque on their customer support though!

Gregory has a sizing chart on-line, I believe, if you don't have the ability to get measured at a shop. You can do this yourself by using the torso length measurement. To find your torso length, measure your back along the spine from the the top point of your hipbones to the knobby bone at the base of your neck. This will give you a measurement in inches that will determine the correct pack size. I would use the aforementioned procedure & find your correct size. Also if it doesn't fit properly you can return it and get all your money back or exchange it. Backcountry.com's warranty is awesome.

Gregory Baltoro 70 Backpack - 4149-4638cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2009

Well for anyone who may have the 'issue' that the person below had, I believe they have a female version which probably addresses that situation (but not need to tell them that.)

Anyway, I love this pack very much. I had the Z-55 and needed to upgrade size so sent that one in to get this. The thing I liked about the Z-55 was that it was slender and fit close to my back so I didn't get knocked off balance. Since this is a bigger bag, it protrudes more outwards but can be tightened when there is excess space. Even though it protrudes out, I don't feel it messing up my balance that much. What I really love about this pack is that there are lots of places to put everything. I was actually able to stuff my sleeping bag on the top piece, put my tent in the sleeping bag compartment, rain gear in the front pocket, flashlights and stuff on one side pocket, first aid and soap stuff on the other, and a granola bar and knife on the waist strap pockets.

I love this pack. Its extremely comfortable as well.

Therm-a-Rest Prolite 3 Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Prolite 3 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

I got the short one and was surprised at how comfortable it was. At only 13 ounces its light and rolls up small as well.

It didn't come with a sack to put it in so unless you tie it up it'll come unrolled.

ExOfficio Amphi Convertible Pant - Men's

ExOfficio Amphi Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

These are very comfy. I like the belt and the zip offs. I will agree that the "panties" are a little annoying at times, but when you aren't wearing loose boxers, underwear it just adds support. Also good if you only bring one pair on an extended hike...

GoLite Reed Pant - Men's

GoLite Reed Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

These are great. They pack down really small, keep me dry, and are a nice material. They aren't plasticy, but rather feel smooth and soft to the touch. There is a zipper on the bottom which allows you to put them on over shoes, although they don't fit too well over the boots I hike in. My only other complaint would be no pockets. Otherwise, these are great!

Gregory Z 55 Backpack - 3050-3660cu in

Gregory Z 55 Backpack - 3050-3660cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

I really liked this pack, unfortunately I had to send it back because I needed a little more room than I thought, would have gone with the z-65 if backcountry had it.

I like how this pack is lightweight, but extremely comfortable. I felt as if everything was close to me and my balance wasn't thrown off because I had a bulging bag on my back. There was plenty of space for most of my stuff and 30 pounds felt feathery. The waist belt is very comfortable and easy to adjust, and the pockets on the belt come in handy.

The only issues I had were:
There wasn't a side pocket for a water bottle. In order to store stuff with somewhat easy access, you would have to put it in the front pouch but this would still require you to take off the pack in order to gain access to it. The only other problem was the amount of straps. While it was nice that you were able to adjust basically everything, it was kind of annoying to have 10 straps hanging down.

Great Bag

Western Mountaineering MegaLite Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Western Mountaineering MegaLite Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

This bag is wonderful, I slept in 15 degree weather and i was in my boxers and a tshirt and was very comfortable and warm. I like how wide it is which allows for a lot of room to wiggle around, especially on the top part. Theres not as much leg room, but theres still plenty. You can unzip where your feet are a little if your feet get hot as well which is nice. Packs very small and very light. While I wish I didn't come in purple, I am fine with it because it's so great! I also had my little dog in the sleeping bag as I was afraid she would get cold in her portable kennel over night and she didn't tear it (I was a little worried I won't lie) so it is durable as well.

Snow Peak Mini Solo Titanium Cookset

Rating for this product: 4 January 29, 2009

I like this because of the size and weight. It's a little unstable on my MSR pocket rocket as it's pretty narrow. I would like to see the handles stay open as well. Hard to grab with gloves on. No real complaints though, worked well for me. Houses my lighter, msr pocketrocket, rope to hang up food and my foldable utensils.

Platypus Platy Plus Bottle

Platypus Platy Plus Bottle

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

this is small, compact, lightweight, and just all around great. No complaints from me. I got a set up to use it like a regular bladder. Put a piece tubing inside it and connected it to the cap and the had another tube reaching me. I can also just put the regular car back on if I want to just carry it outside of my pack so its very versatile.

Platypus Big Zip SL Hydration Bladder

Platypus Big Zip SL Hydration Bladder

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

this is great because like the name suggests, the top zips off. Its essentially a giant zip lock bag. It makes it really easy to scoop up water from a river and then add purifying drops to it. I don't feel as if it will ever come unzipped as it clicks into place, and I am never worried about losing the top because its connected to the bag. very nice bladder all around

MSR Packtowl Personal Towels

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

Unlike other lighweight towels, this is actually soft. Has a nice to hook it on your pack to dry or your tent as well. The loop has a button on it so you can loop it around things rather than need a biner or something of that ilk. The 'body' towel is a little smaller than I'd like though

Great jacket!

MontBell Ex Light Down Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ex Light Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

I got this jacket as an insulation piece for a long term hike starting Feb. However, I went snowboarding and I left my gear at my parents house so I used this. I had this jacket, a waterproof shell, and a simple cotton long sleeve shirt on and was WARM even at 14 degrees F. If I laid in the snow without moving for an hour I am sure I would have gotten cold, but I was very happy and even surprised with the amount of warmth. Incredibly light weight, isn't bulky but is a little puffy (which gives enough dead space to keep you warm.)A few feathers have come out but that would happen with any down item I presume. The only one semi small issue I have is there are no pockets. That is fine since I would use it as insulation underneath something anyway.

GoLite Phantasm Jacket - Men's

GoLite Phantasm Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

I used this as a shell while snowboarding and it snowed continuously for a day. Not a single drop got through this. The material is very soft almost satin like on the outside. Very light weight and the zippers work great. The only issue is that it wont zip up to the top smoothly. The flap on the inside which has soft material for your face gets caught in it. No problem though, you just move it as you zip up.

great jacket though -- would highly recommend it

SmartWool Adventurer Crew Socks - Men's

SmartWool Adventurer Crew Socks - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

No, these aren't the thickest socks in the world, but they are incredibly comfortable. I wore them all day snowboarding and they kept my feet pretty warm even in 14 degrees. They didn't overheat my feet and make them sweat a lot either. If you want plush socks then these probably aren't for you. However, if you want comfortable durable socks, I would suggest these.

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

This hat was very surprising in all aspects. I went snowboarding a couple days ago and wore it when it snowed 12 inches in a day. No moisture ever came in through the top, but my head didn't get incredibly sweaty either. very comfortable and the shape allowed for my ears to get covered entirely. It was 14 degrees and I stayed very warm
