Chaco Z/2 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

May 16, 2012

The Chacos won. Even if it doesn't look that way. I've got a frankenstein pair of Z/2s right now. I decided to take this picture about 10 miles into a 15 mile hike across the Wasatch. Even with a broken strap, the Z/2s are my favorite footwear and put hiking boots to shame.

Petzl Elios Climbing Helmet

Petzl Elios Climbing Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 May 30, 2012

It still has to pass the ultimate test of keeping my head safe from a falling rock, but so far it fits well and it's super light. Climbing helmets fit a bit differently than your ski or snowboard helmet, they sit more on top of the head and that takes a little getting used to, check the sizing chart and make sure you're getting the right size for you.

The Best Year-Round Shell

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2012

I've worked at Backcountry for years now and this is my first Arc'teryx shell. It lives up to all the hype I've absorbed over those years. I bought it for year-round use—from snowboarding to backpacking. I decided on the Theta for a few main reasons. 1. Gore-Tex Pro Shell is totally waterproof, extremely breathable, and bombproof—without being too heavy for backpacking(in my opinion) Paclite was an option I was tossing around, but I wanted something I could abuse a bit more. 2. The length of the jacket. I wanted the extra length for use in Wasatch powder(no powder skirt) and for extra coverage in violent afternoon thunderstorms. 3. I wanted a jacket that would last for around a decade, not just a few seasons. I know plenty of people who've been wearing the same Arc'teryx shell for that long.

I'm 5'11 185lbs and the large fits me perfectly. Sleeves aren't too long and the hood doesn't bother me. I wore it through last winter and it outperformed my expectations. Looking forward to some storms in the Uintas and not worried about staying dry.

Ideal Do-Everything Shorts

prAna Titan Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2012

I only had the Titans for a few weeks before they followed me to Escalante and got chewed up by Bobo, a slot canyon. That was my fault though, not many shorts will survive 20-foot downclimbs through the jaws of Navajo Sandstone(two days in a row). They were just so comfortable.... They only suffered minor perforations along the seams, which is an expected result for what I was doing. I still run in them a few times a week and will be buying another pair for situations where slightly holey pants aren't socially acceptable.

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

Merrell Trail Glove Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2011

I've been hiking barefoot around the Wasatch and Southern Utah and it's been an amazing experience. Strengthening muscles that haven't been used properly my whole life and simply enjoying bi-pedal motion more. I decided to start trail-running again and wanted to find a barefoot shoe that could protect my feet without too much coddling. These trail gloves are it. Wear em without socks and take it easy if you haven't been doing anything barefoot. These shoes require a different stride and running technique. If you haven't been practicing, expect to start off very slow, but get excited for less knee pain and more fulfilling trail runs down the road.

Marmot Trestles 30 Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic

Marmot Trestles 30 Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2011

This bag is ideal for mixed conditions and use. The synthetic fill and DWR coating are a killer combination for wet conditions where down could get wet and fail. I've had this bag for 3 years and have used it in alpine environments above 10k feet and in the high desert. The 30 degree rating stands true if you don't run abnormally hot or cold. When the mercury is right around 30 degree I normally sleep in my socks, a light hoodie or t-shirt, and run-of-the-mill sweatpants.

Smith Factor D-Max Sunglasses - Polarized - Interchangeable

Rating for this product: 5 May 12, 2008

These shades are killer for anyone with a medium to large sized face. The visual clarity is amazing, way less distortion than I'm used to. The lens coverage is a large factor in this and they also block out the wind very well. Stupid easy to change the lenses in the glasses too, takes a few seconds. If you ride a bike these will make your life a whole lot easier. Next time you find yourself on the top of some huge hill after dark just pop in your other lenses and go. No more punishing your eyes for your sunglasses' lack of multiple lenses!

Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boot - Men's

Salomon Malamute Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2008

Been riding these boots for the past 4 seasons and have no complaints. Super comfortable liners. Customized is always better but when it comes to factory liners you'll have a very hard time finding better. Super easy lacing system and I haven't ever had problems with the laces fraying or breaking. Really stiff boot to start out and they keep most of it but when these finally break in they are butters. They stay incredibly responsive but get a real nice mellow flex to them that makes em perfect. If you're looking for a high performance boot for anywhere on the mountain grab these. Mixed with a medium stiff binding you've got a set up that will kill it anywhere on the mountain. You will not be disappointed in salomon boots, especially these ones. I won't ride anything else, cept maybe the f24s next year...

GoLite Hex 3 Tent

GoLite Hex 3 Tent

Rating for this product: 5 June 5, 2007

If you're looking for a lightweight tent/shelter this is definitely the way to go. Very easy to set up. You stake down the 6 corners, open up the door, put the pole into place and tighten up the straps on the stakes. You can also hang it from a solid branch/anything overhead and forget about the pole all together. You'll want to buy the nest that is available for the shelter. If you purchase the floor it does not completely seal off the outside world and some bugs may get in. You can avoid this by lining the outside of the tent with rocks if you can't find the nest in stock anywhere. There is plenty of room for 2 people with the pole, 3 would be a bit cramped. Without the pole you won't have a problem fitting 3 people in there. The hex shape of the tent holds up extremely well in high winds and I sat through a heavy rainstorm without any leakage. Overall I'm extremely happy with this tent and recommend it to anyone who wants a lightweight backpacking shelter that is simple to set up and performs as well as a tent twice it's weight.

Petzl Tactikka Plus Headlamp

Petzl Tactikka Plus Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 June 5, 2007

This headlamp is perfect if you don't need the brightest one in the world. For camping/hiking/climbing its perfect. While it may not be the brightest headlamp out there I find it more than adequate for all my needs. The red lens flips up very easily and is an option that I feel all headlamps should be required to have. You just don't need the regular light option in most situations and it is very annoying when someone blinds me with their white light while I'm trying to maintain my night vision. The battery pack issue others complain about is not an issue if you put the batteries in correctly. They aren't the easiest to put in but you just have to make sure everything is clipped in and your batteries will not fall out. It might take you a minute or so to put them in correctly, a very small price to pay considering the great functionality of this headlamp.

Big Agnes Crystal Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree PrimaLoft/Down

Big Agnes Crystal Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree PrimaLoft/Down

Rating for this product: 5 June 5, 2007

This is an incredible bag for the price. The mix of down and primaloft keeps you warm, dries out quickly, and gives you that comfort of down loft that other synthetic bags lack. The outer shell is very durable and stands up to a ton of abuse. You'll definitely need to get a pad for this one. Big agnes doesn't insulate the bottom of their bags because they have a sleeve for a pad to go there. They do this because insulation on the bottom of a bag is severely reduced when you lay on top of it and really isn't necessary. You also can't roll off your sleeping pad which is the biggest pro in my book. I would recommend the Big agnes insulated REM pad. This adds insulation the bottom of the bag and insures that the cold ground won't get to you.

These shoes are great for hiking in warm weather, the ventilation is just amazing. It also helps when you have to pass through bodies of water, they dry out super fast. Very comfortable shoes, I wear them around town just as much as I hike in them. If they get too grungy you can just throw them in the washing machine, they are machine washable! Make sure to air dry them though, definitely don't want them in the dryer. Oh yeah, I would recommend going down a half size on these. I'm normally an 11.5 on the nose and an 11 would be perfect. Rating for this product: 5 April 27, 2007

I've always been a big fan of the style and fit of Spy's glasses and these are no exception. These are very comfortable glasses that stay in place when you need them too. They'd be great for running, biking, etc. They have a really nice matte black finish and the hinges are a gunmetal grey and not a chrome, light in the picture is a bit misleading. The polarized lenses are great while driving or on the water. If you like catching glare in your eyes definitely don't get the polarized lenses but if you don't like those stabbing rays of light these are the ticket.

This shade was extremely easy to set up and take down. Will only take about 5 minutes either way. Does a great job of blocking out the sun and rain. Had this set up in about 20-30 mph winds and it looked like it wanted to go once or twice but didn't pull out, only had 3 stakes down instead of the 6 that it comes with. It's so nice not to have to shove ear buds/headphones into my ears anymore. The venting on the helmet is great, there is a slide on the back/top of the helmet that opens and closes the vents, real easy to use even when riding. Haven't had any issues with goggles fitting either.
